15.01.2022 A few more Cloudride Prologue registrations through the week. Karen Foat from Tinderry Range who did the pre-course check for last year’s Prologue course has signed on for the racing business this year and Matt Williams from Chiltern Vic. Matt was an early DNF [illness] on Cloudride18 back to get rid of the monkey. CLOUDRIDE RACE ROUTES Not a lot of change through the week to the Cloudride 500k and 1000k race routes despite the easing fire conditions....Continue reading

07.01.2022 With a slight easing of the fire conditions last week and cooler weather I headed out on the bike to cover some of the Prologue course. On the way south out of Canberra Namadgi National Park was closed and KNP likewise remains closed. The only option was Boboyan Rd and on Thursday with winds gusting 50-60kph it was an unpleasant ride in a filthy dust storm. By mid afternoon I’d managed a brief mobile signal up on top of the range and got an Emergency Warning! message that my ...destination, Adaminaby was under threat. I pulled up early at the border and slept the night. Away next morning for the 25k into Adaminaby with no sign of any smoke or fire threat. The Shannon’s Flat RFS crew were having a coffee, kitting up and were well provisioned with a D9Dozer on a float a bunch of Fire Trucks but hardly in any urgent rush to get to the fire ground. Yesterday a new fire started in Namadgi a little south of Tharwa and now all roads south are closed once again. I’m leaning towards running the Prologue route via Caloola Farm [subject to access] and along the Naas Valley FT to Adaminaby. From Adaminaby there will be a 30k paved section back towards Cooma on the Snowy H’way then SW down Middlingbank Rd before tackling some rolling gravel/dirt farm roads that get little love from the shire grader. Into Berridale which has a modest MiniMart, Cafe, Pub grub and plenty of out of season accommodation fo those who want a bed for the night. Over to Nimmitabel, chasing sheep they give up quick and kangaroos who persist on following fence lines for kilometres if there’s no exit.. faster you go they just switch it up a gear and go faster. This country is an amazing treeless moonscape, hills and fast rolling gravel winding off into the distance Nimmitabel as always was busy with weekend coast traffic. I refuelled on a full breakfast over the road from the bakery at a the little cafe [once was Berties] and headed north out of town serenaded by a rabble of dogs [you’ll all get to meet them] and up Tom Groggin Rd to Cooma. This is another great ride, plenty of speed on and mostly hard packed fast undulating hill country. A couple of hours along I pulled up middle of the road for a drink break and the first vehicle I’see immediately appeared from behind. One of the local landowners pulled up with his two daughters for a chat to see what i was up to. We chatted about the race route and he updated me on the Air Tanker crash at the Numeralla fire . advising that all roads into Numeralla from Cooma were now closed again as was the PeakView - Jerangle Roads. I phoned ahead for an Uber pick-up from my wife and rode on into to Cooma. With another window of very hot weather on its way later this week this open/closed road routine is a long way from over and it might be several weeks before the final route can be locked in. Cheers Steve

06.01.2022 Cloudride 1000 and Prologue 500 entries are rolling in with some highly credential cross discipline athletes registering. Foremost amongst them is local Canberra triathlete Laura Marshall who has signed on for the 500k Prologue. Laura has a finish in the European Arc2Arc Enduroman a 140k run from Marble Arc London to Dover, a 33k English Channel swim and a 300k bike leg to the Arc de Triumph in Paris a triumph indeed and a record time for a non-wetsuit swim leg. Simon De P...omeroy from Sydney a highly credentialed XC and 6,12 and 24H racer has signed on for the 1000k Cloudride. Sometimes on the SS but more recently geared for a 5th place in the 2017 WEMBO Mens Elite 24H Solos in Italy just one lap behind Jason English [2nd] and two behind Canadian winner Corey Wallace. Plenty of endurance and determination from West Australian Eliza Allan who has signed on for the Cloudride 1000 . as evidence, with a book ‘Donkey Dreaming’ recounting her Bicentennial National Trail epic with her daughter in 2016 . Eliza now works remote at Halls Creek in WA and will tackle the Cloudride course solo as will partner Matt Looker. I understand bets are on the kitchen table!
