25.01.2022 Come and see what new things the Bush Dance Group have for you. It’s highly likely you have been wondering what’s happening at Bush Dancing lately? Have you been itching to break out into a jiggy jig, a rollicking reel or a dizzying(whirling?) waltz? The Monaro Folk Society’s Bush Dance Group (BDG) has been hard at work trialling online get-together workshops using Zoom. There is a music workshop with a core band that other musicians can join in online. This flows seamlessly ...into the Dance workshop. Air dancing, teddybear partner dancing etc, the possibilities are endless. Chat to your friends without interrupting the callers by using the chat feature. Our program for this coming MONDAY 29th June 7.00 Call in to the MFS General Meeting to vote on membership fees. 7.30 Come in if you would like to hear or join the band discussing and practicing their music. 8.00 Join the dance program with Peter, Colin and the band. 24.01.2022 Our second Bush Dance Group Zoom Workshop was a great success! It is a really fun and safe way to get together with friends. This evening we had two of our dance callers sharing the dance program. Peter called his new especially devised creations, getting us moving around in our lounge rooms/kitchens. Colin taught "Rose Of Tankerton" a dance from Pat Shaw. Musicians could play along with the band online as well.

06.01.2022 The Monaro Folk Society has postponed its 50th Anniversary celebration at the Yarralumla Woolshed on March 28. We have rebooked the venue for Saturday, December... 5 in the hope that things will have settled by then. The event is intended as a showcase of what we do, individual & group performances, a Kids Bush dance, join-in dances for Contra and Irish Set Dance, culminating in the annual bushdance Shearers Ball that evening, a promotional splash with the hope of raising public awareness of what we do. My apologies for this long post here, but it ties in with Jose's post below about the relevance of Folk Clubs now. MFS covers a range of activities, but faces two difficulties: one is finding people to fill committee positions and some group organiser positions; the other is attracting new members of the public to what we do. I suspect many folk clubs are in the position of relying on older members who are dropping away. The latest COVID 19 situation means we have suspended all our ongoing weekly dance workshops and monthly dances. Our session groups are self regulating as to whether they will continue to meet, as the personal separation issue is not there as in dance. However, I was actually surprised that our biggest session is suspending current activities - I guess this is because they have a number of older participants. My concern is that by the time we get through the current health situation many members will have lost the habit of attending activities, particularly the older ones, and our numbers are further depleted. On the other hand, there may be a very positive response in a return to social interaction. My hope is that with enforced break from organising and attending ongoing activities, we can use the breathing space to reassess our approaches, establish better links with other folk societies and try to build membership interest in emerging at the end with a better product, and a promotional structure ready to launch into action. ... but I was always a glass half full type ..... Stay safe.
