24.01.2022 Meet your Monash Abroad Contacts! Part 3 Rachel Taylor International Education Coordinator Ahoy! I’m Rachel, and I make up one third of the outbound semester crew. I look after the Europe and Africa portfolios at Monash Abroad and tell all my students to go awayon global experiences!... Originally from Aotearoa New Zealand, I am a third culture kid who grew up in Hong Kong and Indonesia. I majored in Development Studies and International Relations and spent the last year of my degree on exchange at the University of Texas at Austin (Hook ‘em Horns! ). I also hold an MA in Cultural Geography. I’ve lived and worked in the USA, the UK, Perth and now here in Naarm/Melbourne! When I’m not at my desk, I’m a big fan of live music, road trips, and literary journalism. Facilitating global programs for students is very rewarding, as I firmly believe that the more people traverse borders, the more culturally harmonious the world becomes. A semester abroad is an academic experience, but it is very much about learning beyond the classroom too. Strangers will become close friends, unexpected challenges will build your resilience, and new environments will lead you to reflect on your values, identities and cultural perspectives. My three top tips for students are: 1) Accept you can’t control everything. Travel (and life!) will never go 100% to plan embrace the philosophy that everything always works out, even if the way it transpires isn’t quite how you had originally envisioned. 2) It’s common for students to fixate on university league tables and big-name cities when they start considering semester abroad programs. I encourage students to consider locations that may be off the beaten path and to prioritise finding the right individual fit for them rankings aren’t everything. It takes time to thoroughly research all of your potential destinations, so don’t leave it to the last minute to start your application! 3) Once you’re out there in the big wide world, turn off your mobile data and put down the phone. My best travel experiences have been those where I was living in the moment and not behind a screen.

19.01.2022 Looks like quite a number of you are interested in knowing more about us who are working behind the scenes. Next up, we have... Mandi International Education Coordinator... Hello there! I’m Mandi, the International Education Coordinator at Monash Abroad who coordinates all outbound, semester-length exchange to the UK, Canada, USA, Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Peru. I passionately believe in the transformative power of experiencing the world as more than just a tourist. I grew up in Adelaide and studied a BA in Literature and Screen Studies, as well as an Advanced Diploma in Acting (Theatre), but it wasn’t until I moved overseas for the first time in my early 20s that I felt my real education began. I’ve been lucky enough to have lived and worked in Washington DC, London, Sydney and Papua New Guinea; and my favourite place in the world is anywhere I can sit by the ocean watching the sunset, with a glass of wine and a puppy playing at my feet. When I’m not travelling (or planning my next trip), you can find me bingeing on political podcasts, reading political biographies or glued to MSNBC and CNN, following the US election cycle. My top tip for going on exchange is to get to know the locals; don’t just surround yourself with familiar faces from home. You’ll experience so much more and really get to understand what life is like from another perspective if you take that leap outside your comfort zone. My second tip is to be flexible about where you’d like to go and don’t get fixated on going to a particular country or partner institution. Sometimes the best experiences happen in the places you least expect them to!

18.01.2022 Second year Monash student, Yu Yu Marip shares how participating in activities with the University of Warwick has helped her personal growth: "I've been fortunate enough to engage in various activities with students from the University of Warwick. These experiences have been very personal and valuable to me as I joined to initially challenge myself and to step outside my comfort zone. The program I participated in enabled me to work alongside different individuals with great... minds from different cultural backgrounds and academics. Despite our difference and experiences, we all came together to create a common project of our passion. The experience made me more confident in myself, to put myself in more uncomfortable situations and helped me with my personal growth." 03.01.2022 Meet your Monash Abroad Contacts! Part 4 We hope you are enjoying this series and feel like you are getting to know us a little more. Next up is...... Suzie Kwok - Education Abroad Officer Hiya! I’m Suzie, the Education Abroad Officer at Monash Abroad. I am usually your first point of contact and will help guide you on your way to studying overseas! I grew up in a small town in Scotland but have roots in Hong Kong, so I am the definition of blended culture! Perhaps, this is why I am a curious soul and have approached life with openness and desire to experience new things. It should be no surprise that I found every opportunity to go overseas, and this has resulted in studying, working and living in the USA, Hong Kong, Sydney and now Melbourne! Funnily enough, I grew up with the intention to be an Accountant. However, I ended up doing a Bachelors in International Business, which made exchange a compulsory component. My exchange was definitely the highlight of my degree and gave me the confidence to do other overseas experiences shortly afterwards. This is how I ended up doing a Masters at Monash in Sustainable Tourism Management, which allowed me to do a number of study tours to Fiji and Berlin. Outside of the office, I enjoy hanging out in cafes, thrifting and cooking for my friends and family. My top tip for studying overseas is to embrace all the new experiences and cultures. This can be overwhelming, scary, and so unfamiliar to what you know back home - I get it! But, I truly believe it can be the most rewarding experience when you are open and keen to learn, because this is what brings people closer together and creates lifelong friendships.

02.01.2022 We are finally launching our brand new page dedicated for our incoming Monash Abroad students! Margery Neoh - Education Abroad Officer Hi all, I am responsible for all incoming exchange/study abroad enquiries, applications and enrolment matters. I completed my Masters of Communication and Media Studies at Monash University. My first ever experience overseas (on my own) is for an exchange program to Australia when I was 12. I came back again to Melbourne again when I was 19 on my Monash exchange program and never left! My top tip for studying overseas is to have a copy of all your important documents with you on file as well as PDF. You never know if you may lose your passport (like I did!)
