25.01.2022 Hi Monash Alumni, my name is Thanh Truong and I am a 2010 Bachelor of Commerce/Arts alumnus. 2020 has been a challenging year for us all. For many it is a year to forget. For me it has been a year of opportunity. Being ready to adapt to new circumstances overnight has been the story of the pandemic for me. Earlier this year I was selected to be a contestant on Channel 7’s Plate of Origin cooking show. I would be cooking and representing my cultural heritage, Team Vietnam. I ...landed in Sydney to the news NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian was announcing a new range of restrictions to combat the spread of COVID-19. I had just left behind my wife and my 6-month-old son Oliver in Melbourne to attend this competition and my teammate and I were concerned we wouldn’t be allowed back into Victoria. Uncertainty, anxiety and panic were eerie feelings on the streets. Then the hoarding started! I remember contestants talking about how individuals and families weren’t able to get the staples such as flour and toilet paper because the supermarkets had not yet had time to enact limits per customer on essential items. This was a wakeup call for all the contestants. We now needed to carefully consider the ingredients needed. I know this brought the teams closer together. Just like the show brought us together, we wanted our food to bring our communities together. We wanted to cook dishes that viewers could also cook at home. The #covidcooking movement had taken off! Now, back in Melbourne, when I walk around the neighbourhood I feel more connected to my local community and spend far more time thinking about what to cook for dinner. My hope is that the pandemic will encourage everyone to reassess the way we think about food, the kitchen and how we nourish ourselves. As a fruiterer, I hope you’ve been sourcing fresh fruit and vegetables for your family. After all, I am the Fruit Nerd and my belief is that good food starts with good produce! P.S. I hope you’ll cheer us on tonight! The Plate of Origin Grand Final airs on Channel 7 at 7.30pm (Tuesday 22 September). UPDATE: CONGRATULATIONS TO THANH'S 'TEAM VIETNAM' WHICH CAME SECOND PLACE IN THE SHOW (SCREENED 22 SEPT 2020). AN AMAZING EFFORT. www.fruitnerd.com.au Instagram: @fruitnerd #alumnipostcard #monashalumni #monashlife #melbourne #sydney Plate Of Origin Images: Courtesy of Channel 7. 18.01.2022 "Break free of the lenses that limit you." Wise words from alumna Maria Dimopoulos AM, whose advice to graduates is to not be deterred by things out of your control. "Rather than being distracted by what you do not control, think about what you can influence, and how that ultimately impacts on what you control and impact going forward." Maria is Special Adviser, Multicultural Communities at the Department of Justice & Community Safety. #MonashAlumni

17.01.2022 I am Syeda Jaferi Husain, I completed Master of Communication and Media Studies from Monash University in 2016. After that, I came back home to Bangladesh and I have been working and living here. Currently I am working as a Gender Consultant for the World Bank Office in Dhaka. To my surprise I got this job during the lockdown. As a Gender Consultant I conduct qualitative research, write reports and attend webinars across different time zones. Considering the current circums...tances, it is an ideal job and I have always believed that research and writing require full concentration and can optimised at home instead of a 9 to 5 office cubicle. Also, Dhaka is a very crowded city. Working from home saves time that is wasted in endless traffic while commuting. I have specifically mentioned a positive side of my life during the pandemic. But it does not mean we are not living in fear. Personally, I have not attended any social event or public place in over six months. I only go out occasionally when there is an emergency. I live with my parents who are in their old age. Therefore, I must be careful. I believe by staying home I am contributing to a solution rather than being part of a problem. We are all going through horrific and unpredictable times, and there are rumours of a second lockdown because people in Dhaka are not obeying the rules of social distancing. Many people I knew have lost their lives during this pandemic. Every day social media and the news are flooded with devastating reports of deaths, and industries going bankrupt. I sincerely pray that the world and our lives become normal again. #alumnipostcard #monashalumni #monashlife #monashbangladesh #monashdhaka #Bangladesh #Dhaka How have you spent your time during COVID-19? "Charles Caldas’s experiences at university set him on a path that would see him build a multimillion-dollar enterprise. And it stemmed not from his studies, but from a most unlikely source. It was the band the Monash University arts student formed with fellow students that would be instrumental in his future and lead him to be co-founder and CEO of global digital ...rights agency Merlin." 14.01.2022 Hello Monashians. My name is Kalvin Sandabunga and I completed my Master of Education specialising in Expert Teaching Practice in 2018. Currently, I am working at Sekolah Dian Harapan, Yayasan Pendidikan Pelita Harapan, Indonesia, as a curriculum coordinator and teacher trainer. Starting from mid-March 2020, our students and teachers must study and work from home. At first, it was very confusing and uncertain. Many parents complained that they found it difficult assisting an...d teaching their children at home. Certainly, parents weren’t the only people challenged during this time. Teachers were working longer hours adapting lessons to the technology, ensuring students were actually attending virtual classes, and staying up late to create instructional videos. This is our job as educators. Some of us were familiar with online teaching from studying at Monash. However, this has had a major impact on education in Indonesia. In the recent past, virtual meetings were used at university but not at primary or secondary schools. Now we have virtual management meetings, virtual classrooms, virtual field trips, virtual school orientations, and even virtual flag ceremonies. We rely on most of our activities virtually! It’s all been a big change and there are still things to be grateful for. While working from home, I think I’ve improved my cooking skills because I need to cook for myself more. It’s healthier and more economical to cook your own food, isn't it? I remember the last time I cooked my own meal was when I was at Monash. Even though work time becomes erratic when working from home, it gives me more time to call my family and arrange virtual reunions with friends. During this pandemic the disruptions have to some extent revitalised education in Indonesia and new policies have been created to support the needs of educators and students. Well, I call it a blessing in disguise. #monashalumni #alumnipostcards #MonashLife #Indonesia #monashindonesia #covidcooking How have you spent your time during COVID-19? 12.01.2022 As we head into week two of graduations, we're sharing one of alumna Geraldine Davys' most important life lessons. "Life is all about how you handle Plan B. When Plan A becomes unavailable, you need to have what it takes to handle Plan B. Always take the opportunity, and if need be, work it out later... And you never know; your Plan B may eventually end up superior to your Plan A. Just be ready." Geraldine is the Director of Marketing & Product at Nissan , and gave an inspiring address to graduates last week. #MonashAlumni

09.01.2022 Hi, I'm Pasan Kavisinghe, a 2017 engineering graduate from Monash University living in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Being a Project Manager involved in commercial development, it's never practical or feasible to work from home because your job role involves numerous site visits and on-site planning. However, my skills and perseverance have definitely been tested with the ever changing global landscape. I believe the years I spent at Monash prepared me to have a dynamic mindset. This h...as allowed me to make decisive calls on the go. As far as the situation in Sri Lanka is concerned, we have as a nation been lucky enough to have not been hit as hard by COVID-19 as many other countries. The majority of reported cases on our island have been mainly from returning Sri Lankan citizens who had been stranded overseas during this time. It has definitely been a challenge adapting to the new social norms that entail mask wearing and social distancing. It’s impractical to assume that we can ever overcome this outbreak without playing our own role as individuals in society and adapting to the so-called 'new normal'. I believe by playing our own part we can combat this pandemic and recover not just as a nation but as a global population, given some time. #Monashalumni #monashlife #alumnipostcard #SriLanka #colombo #monashalumnisrilanka How have you spent your time during COVID-19?
