13.01.2022 We are proud to announce Masters of Urban Planning & Design student, Giselle Osborne, has won the 2021 National @pia_planning award in the category Outstanding Student Project, for her 'Rewilding Industrial Land' strategy. Rewilding Industrial Land is a strategy for metropolitan Melbourne/Naarm which seeks to build a network of biodiverse green infrastructure on employment land. It challenges the existing Victorian framework for biodiversity planning which uses offsets to mi...tigate the effects of urbanisation on ecosystems, investing in conservation land outside the Urban Growth Boundary. Rewilding Industrial Land offers an alternative path forward for biodiversity planning. It outlines a vision to conserve and rewild remnant patches of native vegetation on both public and private employment land, incorporating them within the open space network. Congratulations Giselle! 11.01.2022 #repost @architecture_vic Student Ideas Prize 2020 Entrant Ramp Park by Thierry Pydiah, Monash University Ramp Park is a school where children improve their learning abilities by having fun while playing. By providing multiple pocket spaces, the design idea is to maximise educational play spaces as much as possible and not let the built form take over the whole site. Designing the rooftop and the courtyard as the main playground allows the whole site to be used as outdoor s...paces to make the most of the limited space of the site. The building is oriented to maximise the benefits of the north sun but also to create a direct connection to the residential zone. There will be no fence at the main entrance, but instead, the 9-meter fall from shiel street will act as the front fence. To maximise security, the o-shaped building acts as the main fence and the children’s library is the only shared public space. Image credit: @thierrypydiah

04.01.2022 Tarantino-esque Genoa, is a small hamlet off the Princes Highway that in some locals’ words, ‘was left to burn’. The old farming town’s committee has gotten used to employing a DIY approach to its development. Everything from the public toilet, tennis court upgrades and peppercorn lease of the old school site, have been achieved through an ongoing series of volunteer led funding applications and working bees, to get the job done. Genoa Town Committee is one of three grassroo...ts organisations we will be partnering with for the upcoming Slow Recovery and (Co)realise studio-studies paired unit. We look forward to partnering with Genoa Town Committee to assist them on their journey towards reimagining their town into a bright post-farming, bushfire resilient future. Following Open House Melbourne’s regional program over the Easter weekend, this research will also be shared in Gender and Disaster Pod’s upcoming conference in May, Gender Justice in Disasters: Inspiring Action. That’s it from me on this channel but follow me @nikhila.madabhushi to stay tuned on all of the above!

Participants are encouraged to focus on the ideas and thoughts that can... never be made real at all rather than a realistic approach. Responding to one national brief, participants will be mentored to help with design development and present their proposal to a judging panel in each state and territory. All year levels are encouraged to enter, its all about ideas! Winners from each state will go into the national competition for the chance to win $3000!!!
