24.01.2022 Philip showed us his home-made instrument based on the design of an Appalachian mountain dulcimer, modified to suit the materials I had, and my limited woodworking skills and tools he said. The Appalachian dulcimer is a fretted string instrument of the zither family, typically with three or four strings, originally played in the Appalachian region of the United States.

11.01.2022 Ken’s autoharp is an example of a musical instrument in the chorded zither family. Debate exists over the origin of the autoharp. A German immigrant in Philadelphia, US, Charles F. Zimmermann, was awarded US 257808 in 1882 for a design for a musical instrument that included mechanisms for muting certain strings during play. He named his invention the "autoharp".

06.01.2022 Ken’s final exhibit was his duet concertina, an instrument that is unisonoric (producing the same note on the push and pull of the bellows), and has the lower notes on the left and higher on the right.

06.01.2022 Elizabeth’s job is to give advice, support and training to volunteer puppy raisers. With the aim of training the puppies to be the best behaved of dogs, the puppy-raising volunteers look after them from the age of seven weeks until they are 12-15 months old. It is a demanding but rewarding task, as many hours of devoted attention are required to get the puppies to the very high standard of training that GDV aims for. The months in lockdown in Victoria were a challenge for the Puppy Development Advisors as they learned quickly to use technology like Zoom, FaceTime and informational videos to support their puppy raisers in place of the normal person-to-person contact they would normally provide.

04.01.2022 Monash choristers are an interesting bunch with a diverse range of interests and occupations. Last Tuesday Elizabeth talked to us about her work as the Senior Puppy Development Advisor at Guide Dogs Victoria, and we were all ears. GDV provides orientation and mobility training to people who have low, or no vision including children and people whose vision loss is associated with an acquired brain injury.
