23.01.2022 A new exhibition at Monash University Library, ‘The Perfect Migrant’, challenges ideas of perfection. It opens 27 May 2021. Read more: https://www.monash.edu/library/the-perfect-migrant... The Perfect Migrant’ is a term that has been used to describe a group of 3,000 internees who set out from the United Kingdom on the HMT Dunera and HMS Queen Mary. Designated ‘enemy aliens’ after the declaration of war in 1940 between Britain and Germany, many of these individuals were refugees from Germany and Austria. In this exhibition we invite you to consider their experiences as ‘perfect’ migrants. Erwin Fabian Art has many functions: creating a dialogue with the viewer, engaging in political activism, inspiring or philosophising, and is both decorative and functional. It is made by professional artists or ordinary people, analysed by specialists and appreciated by everyone. But the process of creating art also serves as a place of refuge and healing through self-expression. Those who have been forced to migrate are faced with physical deprivation, death of family and friends, bigotry, lack of contact with the past, and no perceivable future with limited to non-existent agency. Art offers refuge.

16.01.2022 And proud to have published this extraordinary book: 'Few of us are capable of inspiring the kind of devotion and loyalty that could bring such a team together. The two volumes of Dunera Lives are a remarkable conclusion to a career and a life. Even this second volume is generously illustrated, following its remarkable older sibling of 2018, which interpreted the Dunera experience through the visual record. Both are superbly produced by the excellent Monash University Publishing.' Frank Bongiorno

16.01.2022 'Readers will be enthralled by Irving’s rich investigative research. He uncovers the life of one of the world’s most important intellectuals, who challenged archaeologists, historians and socialists, and defied attempts by wartime states to deny civil liberties and academic freedom. It is a remarkable and different style of biography. As the world once again moves toward reaction and social democratic parties disappoint, Childe’s anti-determinist Marxism remains relevant for socialism in the 21st century.' A great review of Terry Irving's 'The Fatal Lure of Politics: The Life and Thought of Vere Gordon Childe' in International Socialism journal.

16.01.2022 'He was hated in the British ruling class; rumours circulated that he was a Russian spy, and George Orwell volunteered to the Foreign Office in 1949 his own view that Childe was a Soviet "fellow traveller".' In a fascinating Q&A for Australian Policy and History, Terry Irving - Radical Historian, Author and Educator and Jimmy Yan discuss Terry's new biography of Vere Gordon Childe, 'The Fatal Lure of Politics', covering Childe's student days and political development, the interplay between his politics and archaeology, surveillance by ASIO, and more.

13.01.2022 An extraordinary photograph. Infantry marching ahead in single file to the front line. Along the sky line a train of mules is carrying ammunition forward to the... light guns. All around may be seen the wastage of battle which typifies Westhoek, during WW1. Photograph taken by Captain Frank Hurley, the well-known Australian war photographer. Lest We Forget. Photograph came from the State Library of New South Wales. Image file number IE10890294.

10.01.2022 Happy anniversary folks! publishing.monash.edu

09.01.2022 We're very happy to share that the next of our Tooth and Company hotel albums has just been uploaded to our Open Research website for you to enjoy. This latest ...albums contain mostly interior photographs of Sydney hotels from the mid-1930s to early 1940s. The hotels included in these album cover all areas of Sydney, plus many hotel in the Newcastle and Hunter Regions, and provide us with a stunning visual record of the extensive remodelling program that Tooth undertook on many of their hotels during this time. The photographs highlight the work of a number of notable architects that regularly produced hotel designs for Tooth including J.G. Dalziel; Cyril Ruwald; R.A. de T. Prevost, Sidney Warden, V.D. Renshaw and the firms of Copeman, Lemont & Keesing; Joy & Pollitt; Rudder & Grout. We now have approximately 1,000 new hotel photographs digitised and uploaded from these Tooth and Company albums, representing hundreds of hotels across New South Wales. You may find that some of the hotel photographs on our website are quite yellow or dark. The albums are obviously quite old and were not always stored in ideal conditions prior to making their way to our archive, and the photographs were of course taken using completely different technology to what we have available today. When we digitise we do so not just to make these photographs accessible to the public but also for preservation purposes. We digitise the photographs as they are and don't alter the tone, brightness or contrast, as we may do when sharing images on social media. So you may find you need to at least lighten some of the images to see the full detail, but we're sure you will still enjoy viewing them. We have just shared a small number here, but you can browse all the available photographs from the Tooth and Company albums here - https://openresearch-repository.anu.edu.au/hand/1885/209070. We will be adding the final few albums within the next week or so and will share more images here as they are available. Thanks to the very hard working ANU Library Digitisation Team for their great assistance with this project. The Australian National University Library

01.01.2022 'On Red Earth Walking deserves a wide readership amongst and beyond historians. It implicitly poses questions that are central to our nation’s future. The culmination of her life’s work seeking to document the political and cultural aspirations of marrngu people in the Pilbara, in On Red Earth Walking Anne Scrimgeour has bequeathed the nation a map into our future.' From Michael Dillon's wonderful review in Australian Policy and History, which is featured alongside another thoughtful and insightful review of the same book by Tim Rowse.
