18.01.2022 Jazz is old and new at the same time. No one was listening to themselves when they were starting out. We had the best two hours with Branford Marsalis in the first workshop as part of our Prestige Artist Series. Brandford shared music, advice and plenty of great stories with us. Needless to say, it was a hoot. #musicatmonash #prestigeartistseries #branfordmarsalis #jazz #classical #monashfromhome #monashartsonline Monash Arts

10.01.2022 Need a lockdown soundtrack? WE'VE GOT YOU! Each month we are releasing a brand new set of recordings as part of the Monash Sessions in a series called 5 in 5. This month we are starting with our recordings made with the jazz legend Linda May Han Oh! ---... Recorded in 2018, this project features internationally distinguished Australian jazz musician, bassist and composer Linda May Han Oh and our students. This unique learning experience is a key pedagogical approach within the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music, with established artists mentoring the next generation of jazz musicians. In Linda's words: "These original pieces are from two of my previous albums - 'Walk Against Wind' and 'Sun Pictures'. On this recording, I rearranged these pieces for these slightly larger configurations and in a short amount of time, these up-and-coming musicians at Monash University learned and executed a considerable amount of challenging music, really delivering their best and doing a fantastic job. They offered their own distinct musical interpretations that I found touching and honest, giving myself a different perspective of these tunes. This album is the culmination of a handful of rehearsals and a night performing this music at the Jazzlab Jazz Club in Brunswick, and I'm honoured to have collaborated with them on this." --- The Monash Sessions is an ongoing series of albums curated by jazz staff at the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music, Monash University, featuring acclaimed artists alongside Monash School of Music staff and students. Artists in this series of releases include Hermeto Pascoal, Andrea Keller, Kenny Werner, Sandy Evans, Ralph Alessi, Judy Bailey, Ben Monder, Mike Nock, Vince Jones, and Tony Gould. --- You can buy the entire album for just $7! https://monashschoolofmusic.bandcamp.com//linda-may-han-oh
