24.01.2022 I want to give a big shout out to an amazing artist Karen Du Toit, who painted this beautiful painting Bee wise that will soon adorn my walls!
22.01.2022 Spring is in the air - and that means will be swarming. This is normal behaviour. If you a swarm, notify a beekeeper (me!) or the local Beekeeping club (BSSA in South Aus) Please dont try to use water , smoke or poison to move them on yourself. They are just doing what bees do - leave them alone and theyll leave you alone.
22.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW? If you decide to keep bees, even just one hive in your backyard, you have to become a registered beekeeper; comply with the biosecurity regulations under the Livestock Act, and pay a registration fee based on the number of hives you have. You also have to renew your registration annually. Look what came in the mail yesterday.
21.01.2022 Can you spot the queen? Leave a in the comments section when you find her.
21.01.2022 Hives can thrive through winter as long as there is a source of food for the bees. These lucky girls have found some - check out those bulging pollen pants! #pollenpants #winterflow #ilovebees #savethebees #urbanbeekeeping #backyardbees #backyardbeekeeping
21.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW? Why is a smoker the beekeepers best friend? A light puff of cool smoke (yes there is such a thing - more on that later), makes the bees think they may have to flee from fire, so they gorge on honey in preparation for flight. While they are distracted gorging on honey, the beekeeper can work the hive, still being gentle and calm so as not to agitate them.
20.01.2022 MonDs philosophy: when you cant tend your girls, you bake using their delicious honey!
20.01.2022 Scary? - yes! Pest? - maybe. Beneficial insects - absolutely! Needed in the ecosystem - most definitely!
19.01.2022 So, today was a first for me - there were TWO queens in one of my hives - one either side of the same frame! #queenbee #survivalofthefittest #queensrule #bees #beesofinstagram #backyardbeekeeper
19.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW? The Nasanov gland is found at the tip of the worker honeybees body. Only worker bees have it (drones and the queen dont). Worker bees will cluster together and release a pheromone as a communication signal to other bees. the scent of the pheromone is different in each season. (Note the shiny section towards the end just before the dark tip)
18.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW? If your honey crystallises during the cold winter months, you know you have pure, raw honey. Raw honey has not been heat treated to stabilise the crystallisation process. Most supermarket honey is heated to about 70C so that it stays runny. It might look good, but unfortunately all the goodness in the honey dissipates as heat is applied. Crystallised honey is perfectly good to eat - simply stand the jar in hot (not boiling) water and it will return to liquid form. (Or just enjoy it crystallised ) #liquidgold #honey #honeybees #savethebees #rawhoney #backyardbeekeeping #urbanbeekeeping
17.01.2022 I love seeing these hard working girls making it back home, loaded with pollen
16.01.2022 HOT SMOKE? COOL SMOKE? HOLY SMOKE, IS THAT EVEN A THING? A tightly packed smoker, using fuel made of natural fibres is essential to ensuring that bees wings arent harmed. You know youve got cool smoke if you can hold your hand over the smoke without burning and it billows white (the darker the smoke, the hotter it is).
15.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW?
15.01.2022 Spend a few moments today in gratitude for these amazing little creatures #worldbeeday #savethebees #ilovebees #honeybees #pollinators #urbanbeekeeping #backyardbeekeeping
15.01.2022 Oh my... perfectly edible liquid gold thank you bees
15.01.2022 So pleased the weather eased this arvo - got into my hives as soon as it was warm and dry enough!
15.01.2022 When its your own hive, your heart sinks when you see this! Luckily it was only a test flight and they came back! A walk away split and some new frames and all is well again!
14.01.2022 When the weather doesnt let you get IN the hives, you work ON them!
13.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW? Honeybees wings beat over a short arc of about 90 degrees, but ridiculously fast, at around 230 beats per second. Fruit flies, in comparison, are 80 times smaller than honeybees, but flap their wings only 200 times a second. This video is in slow-motion so your naked eye can see the wings moving
12.01.2022 Is it a swarm or a hive? This time of year bees get very active and can swarm. A swarm is just a cluster of bees looking to establish a home. ... Once established a swarm becomes an established hive when they have wax comb and start storing pollen and nectar. Know the difference so that when you report seeing bees, you report correctly: On the left - bees only = swarm On the right - wax comb, bees, = hive
11.01.2022 As soon as the temperatures hit double digits, the girls are out and about
10.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW An empty queen cup is not unusual - the bees build them just in case they have to make a replacement queen. They will tear them down again if not used.
08.01.2022 Just for laughs
07.01.2022 What a -day! It started with placement of a hive with a host family at Flinders Park, then a hive split with a queen in waiting at Aberfoyle Park, and topped the day off with a swarm caught at Kidman Park!
06.01.2022 Can you see her? Put a in the comments when you do #backyardbeekeeping #queenspotting #urbanbeekeeping #bees #ilovebees #springbees #spotthequeenbee
05.01.2022 Known as washboarding, the behaviour of bees rocking back and forth as if scrubbing on a washboard is still a mystery. Nobody really knows why they do it. #washboarding #beesofinstagram #backyardbeekeeping #urbanbeekeeping #ilovebees
04.01.2022 Spring inspection today - 5 hives looking good!
04.01.2022 Chocolate drizzled (lets face it, chocolate drowned ) honeycomb candy, made with MonDs bees honey - not glucose syrup - smells divine, tastes even better!
03.01.2022 The various pollen types on this frame are an indication of a hive with a varied diet. #pollen #bees #backyardbeekeeping #urbanbeekeeping
03.01.2022 Is it REALLY organic? Have you purchased organic honey in good faith? Hmm, did you get what you paid for?? https://www.perthhoneycompany.com.au/post/is-honey-organic
03.01.2022 Just for laughs send me a beeutiful message
03.01.2022 So, I passed the biosecurity course! lets hope I never have to use my newfound knowledge to destroy infected hives
02.01.2022 My posts have slowed considerably due to the season - the bees are doing what they do to survive winter and I am monitoring without opening the hives. All appears to be well for now - cant wait for Spring!
02.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW? Honey bees have two sets of mouth parts. The mandibles or jaws are used for chewing. The proboscis is a straw-like tongue used for sucking liquids and also for tasting. The proboscis is also used for food exchange between honey bees, a process called trophallaxis.
