24.01.2022 Aim for one month of living costs in savings at first and build from there. https://lttr.ai/cei4 #Financialeducation #Debt #Money #Poverty #Centrelink #Laceyfilipich #Moneyschool #Avoidingpoverty

22.01.2022 We're recording some new content (exciting times - big announcement coming soon!) The phenomenal Elliott Nieves - Director of Photography and brilliant 7 to 1 Photography with Kelly Pilgrim-Byrne (pictured) spent the day capturing moments of everyday personal finance decisions so we can bring the ideas to life through video and images. We put a lot of prep into these days. ... Every location is mapped and scouted, lists of shots needed are compiled, timings are estimated. Then we do the same actions over and over and over again till we get it right. We do all that work because it *really* pays off. Good quality photos and video are a must. When we have incredible professionals to make the process so easy, why would anyone rely on stock footage? This way, we get on-brand, fit-for-purpose content. SO GOOD! Thank goodness for the amazingly patient hairdresser extraordinaire Janelle at Vivid Hair Lounge, who was willing to run through a variety of transaction scenarios (again and again and again!) for the first shots of the day. Thank you Janelle! You rock :)

21.01.2022 Had a ball today at ABC Perth for Afternoons with Christine Layton, talking about stashing cash. You can listen back here: https://www.moneyschool.org.au//Lacey-Interview-7-4-2021-A (16mins) The trend towards cash avoidance has been happening for years, but it was sped up thanks to #COVID19 when we didn't want to physically touch anything, money included.... Despite people taking less cash out at ATMs, Australians appear to be stockpiling cash: https://theconversation.com/the-paradox-of-going-contactles Why? Many possibilities, including worries about a run on the banks and/or exercising bank bail-in laws. Got a great cash stash anecdote? Share it in the comments below, we'd love to hear it :) PS. 7 to 1 Photography with Kelly Pilgrim-Byrne - how perfect is your shot for this topic! Always a joy to have your awesome shots to draw on, thank you!

18.01.2022 Two radio appearances in one day! Got one of those reminders in the mail from an inactive superannuation fund about your #LifeInsurance cancelling in the last couple of years? Lacey will be talking about that and implications of financial advisor numbers plummeting with Geoff Hutchison, Lucie Bell and Akash Fotedar on ABC Perth Radio's Drive program, at 5:40pm today. ... Listen via your radio, or stream here: https://www.abc.net.au/radio/perth/live/ Earlier today she was delighted to chat with Katherine Bang for BeFM's Morning Wave in Busan Program (an English station in Korea) on the topic of #FinancialIndependence, including why the 'RE' part of the #FIREMovement is often a misnomer. You can listen to that ~10min segment here: https://www.befm.or.kr/program/template.php

14.01.2022 As a rule, we don't share fundraising campaigns. But this one's personal. Money School owes a lot to Kristy Morton. She built our first membership site back in 2016. ... She kept that website up to date, helped Lacey with all the niggly questions that crop up when you run a site, and did it all with a smile and bucketloads of patience. When we won an Innovation Voucher in 2019 from the WA State Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation, Kristy was our go-to Wordpress guru for implementation. She built the new website you see today, including the fabulous FI Supply Calculator which was the reason for the Innovation Voucher. Lacey remembers the day Kristy was going to get the lump in her breast checked - we had a meeting at the office to review the initial site design. She was calm and confident, and we were all sure it was nothing (ugh). When Kristy's first diagnosis of Stage 3 breast cancer came back, Fran compiled the things that helped her get the all-clear for lymphoma back in 2018. While our co-founder Fran was battling with lymphoma in 2020, Kristy generously shared all the info and treatments she'd used to get to remission from what had turned out to be Stage 4 Metastatic breast cancer. Did we mention: Kristy delivered the new website and calculator in February 2020, while going through all the treatment? What an absolute champion. Then she got the all clear. When she came to Fran's wake in October 2020, she radiated energy. It was brilliant to see her so well and happy. To learn of her subsequent brain cancer diagnosis was a shock. It seemed so unfair that this incredible human could kick cancer's butt only to have it come back with a vengeance. To then go through 10 days of full brain radiation was a testimony to Kristy's drive to get through this so she can be with her husband and three daughters as long as possible. The radiation dealt with the five small tumours in Kristy's brain, but a new cancer grew. The prognosis is not good. Though we stand by this: if anyone deserves a miracle, it's Kristy. If anyone could pull though this through sheer will, it's Kristy. So we're not giving up yet. What we can do is support her as she goes through the processes that allow her to be present for her family - specifically gruelling chemo (which we saw the effects of firsthand with Fran) and all the complementary therapies that keep Kristy's body well enough to handle that chemo. If you can spare a few bucks for her support fund, we'd be very grateful. Keep going Kristy. We're with you.

08.01.2022 The weeks following the release of the #FederalBudget are always fascinating. It's like an election litmus test. The government of the day can propose measures and see how they land in the media, then how they trend on socials. A savvy PR team would be using all that feedback to hone an election campaign so it hits the mark.... It's like an opportunity for A/B testing - with A being the budget announcements, and B being the election campaign wording. Whatever your take on this year's budget (and we will come back to this topic soon, to discuss the single parent 2% deposit home loans which we think are really interesting), over the years we've noticed a fundamental problem with how governments plan their spending. Most do not get that the (traditionally capitalist) assumption of how poverty works is flawed. Until they correct that flawed assumption, a budget will never solve the pressing issue of how to lift one in seven adults and one in six kids in Australia out of poverty. Lacey's opinion piece here: https://www.linkedin.com//we-cant-get-federal-budget-righ/

05.01.2022 Fabulous to talk #PrivateHealthInsurance with Felicity Harley for body+soul's Healthy-ish podcast. Eight minutes well spent for anyone wondering why premiums keep rising, how the government incentivises funds not to rip us off, and what the new changes to age limits mean for young people :) https://podcasts.apple.com//health-insurance/id1246679887... (There's also an extended version at 17 mins, in which we delve into financial wellness too: https://omny.fm//how-to-find-financial-wellness-and-retire)
