25.01.2022 **VICTORIAN BUSHFIRE SMOKE HEALTH INFORMATION** People in northern and eastern Victoria have been dealing with bushfire smoke for many weeks now. But today is p...articularly bad across large parts of the state, including many areas that havent been directly impacted by fire. Heres what you should do to minimise the impact of smoke on your health: IF YOU HAVE ASTHMA: - If you suffer from asthma, keep your reliever medication and spacer on hand. - Follow your personalised action plan if smoke or other conditions impact your health. If your breathing, wheezing or chest tightness does not improve when you enact your action plan and follow asthma first aid, call triple-zero (000). Its important to continue to administer reliever medication via a spacer until the ambulance arrives four breaths, four puffs every four minutes. FOR EVERYONE: - Protect yourself from smoke-related health impacts by reducing or stopping physical activity outside. - Take your prescribed medication as normal, avoiding the bushfire and areas affected by smoke if possible. - Stay inside with doors and windows closed. - Operate your air conditioner with the recirculate/reuse mode on or turning your air conditioner off if that option isnt available. - If you are able to, leave the affected area altogether during a bushfire event. Visit family or friends in smoke-free areas or try your local library, shopping centre or other community space that has filtered air conditioning. - If you must be outside, consider using a P2 face mask to reduce the chance of inhaling fine particles from smoke. Please note these masks dont filter out unwanted gases like carbon monoxide. If you or someone you are caring for, such as a child or older person, is beginning to feel unwell, call your local GP clinic or the Nurse on Call on 1300 60 60 24 for more advice. You can also visit Asthma Australias website: www.asthmaaustralia.org.au or the Environment Protection Authority (EPA): www.epa.vic.gov.au *** For everyone directly impacted by the current fires, hang in there, and know the whole community is there to support you!
