25.01.2022 Jacinta playing the Organ and Geraldton Bells in the world famous St Francis Xavier Cathedral designed by the equally famous Arts and Crafts Movement Monsignor John Cyril Hawes 1876 - 1956. Enjoy!
25.01.2022 Hawes didn't just design and produce working drawings for his buildings, he painted them in watercolour and produced cardboard models of them. This is Hawes's painting of St James Kojarena where the Annual Mass and Picnic will take place on Sunday 13th commencing at 11:30. 23.01.2022 An out of the blue "thank you" from Fr Robert to the volunteers who volunteer their time and gifts to the Monsignor Hawes Heritage Centre, the Cathedral Tours, Monsignor Hawes Heritage Inc., the Diocesan Archives, the Utakarra Chapel and The Hermitage, the Mullewa Priest House Museum, Monsignor Hawes Heritage Events, Camino San Francisco. It is you who keep the Monsignor Hawes Heritage show in the road. You are valued more than words can express, for without your volunteering nothing would happen. So it is a big thank you from me to you all. Don't forget the upcoming Christmas suitcase market on 6 December. See you all there with your suitcases and you friends with their suitcases as well!
22.01.2022 Check this out. Great to see visitors appreciating the wonderful story of Hawes. Thanks to 2 of our Cathedral Tour Guides, Pat and Graham, for their cameo roles. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X244K42TqbM
20.01.2022 Monsignor Hawes left his 'Arts and Crafts' mark in many of his buildings with his hand crafted rood crosses. These are also known as the Triumphal Cross and were used in ancient churches where they were normally hung at the chancel (altar) arch. Mary and John the 'Beloved Disciple' are often depicted beneath the cross. #monsignorhawes #artsandcraftsmovement #bahamas #hawesheritagetrail

17.01.2022 Did you know John Hawes built his own 'Burial Cave' and slept in it several times before he died? After the first 'trial' he wrote 'Well! one's grave is a very snug and comfortable place to sleep in!' He died on June 26th, 1956 in Miami, Florida aged 79 and according to his wishes, was returned to Como Hill on Cat Island where he had lived in his Hermitage and was placed in his little cave with no coffin, dressed in the Franciscan habit, lying on his back with his arms outstretched in the form of a cross. 15.01.2022 Some of the talented John Hawes artworks from St Francis Xavier Cathedral.
15.01.2022 The homestead at Melangata Station near Yalgoo was one of only 2 residences Hawes designed during his time in Australia. It was built in 1916, soon after Hawes's arrival in WA., for Charles Caleb Williamson. Melangata is one of the few privately owned Hawes buildings in WA and is therefore not part of the Hawes Heritage Trail. It is possible to visit however as it operates as a Station Stay and Camping Ground. https://www.joclewscooking.com/melangata-c16kf #hawesheritage#artsandcraftsmovement#history For more information on the building visit https://www.monsignorhawes.com/melangata-station-homestead/
14.01.2022 Hawes was well-travelled throughout Western Europe both before and during his time in Western Australia and many of his buildings were influenced by what he saw. In 1923 he visited Arles in France and brought back a postcard showing the portal of the Church St Trophime and made changes to his plans for OLMC Mullewa which incorporated elements of the French church. For more information about the Mullewa Church go to https://www.monsignorhawes.com/our-lady-of-mt-carmel-mulle/ #hawesheritage #artsandcraftsmovement #monsignorhawes
14.01.2022 The Laughing Boy is a sculpture by Florentine sculptor Desiderio Da Settignano (1428 1484). Desiderio Da Settignano was influenced by the Florentine sculptor Donatello (1386 1466). Hawes’ 'Laughing Boy' is a copy of Desiderio Da Settignano’s sculpture and was made by Hawes around 1896 as a project at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London where the students were required to make accurate copies of classical works. Although Hawes was studying architecture at the time, he also enrolled in the Life-Class and the Stonemasons Class at the Arts and Crafts School. Hawes' 'Laughing Boy' is currently displayed in the Monsignor Hawes Heritage Centre Geraldton. #monsignorhawes #artsandcraftsmovement #hawesheritagecentre #visitgeraldton

12.01.2022 The 'jewel in the crown' - the church of Our Lady of Mt Carmel in Mullewa was featured on Macca's Australia All Over this week when a lady from Geelong phoned to say she had visited the church and then went on to tell the story of the amazing priest/architect John Hawes. 12.01.2022 What Used To Be! St John of God Hospital Convent was designed by Hawes in 1939. The chapel he designed to project at right angles on the western side of the convent was never built. The convent was designed to be of similar appearance to the hospital beside it that had been designed and built by Berry Brothers. They were both demolished in the 1990's to make way for a new hospital.
11.01.2022 In the United Kingdom, a 'blue plaque' is a permanent sign installed to commemorate a link between the location of the plaque and a famous person. 07.01.2022 John Hawes commenced his Aboriginal work 'Mission Dolores' in Mullewa when he was appointed parish priest in 1916. Because the local Aboriginal people weren't comfortable in the formal church setting, he took the church to them. To find out more about John Hawes visit the website www.monsignorhawes.com. #monsignorhawes #hawesheritagetrail #visitmullewa
07.01.2022 The arts and crafts influence is evident in all John Hawes's churches, with much of the handcrafted work done by Hawes himself. I wonder if the parishioners of Our Lady of Mt Carmel in Mullewa are aware that the picture of Our Lady of Mt Carmel which sits on the main altar was painted by Hawes? He copied a picture from a Holy Card given to him by the Pope. #artsandcraftsmovement #monsignorhawes #mullewa #hawesheritagetrail

05.01.2022 Hawes first drew a church for the people of Perenjori in 1917 after he had travelled there via the newly opened Mullewa to Wongan Hills rail line. That design was never built but in 1936 he designed the St Joseph's Church which was built by T P Crothers and opened by Bishop O'Collins in 1937. Check out the Hawes Heritage Trail at www.monsignorhawes.com #hawesheritage #perenjori #monsignorhawes

04.01.2022 TINY CHAPEL Do you recognise this tiny chapel? It's the Chapel of St Hyacinth. ... The Romanesque style chapel was designed by renowned architect and priest Monsignor John Hawes and built in Yalgoo 99 years ago. Monsignor Hawes designed many churches in the Midwest but this was his smallest.

02.01.2022 John Hawes touched the lives of people in many parts of the world. One of our 'living treasures' from the Mid-West of WA is Pat Mills who was baptised by John Hawes in Mullewa. Pat has dedicated a lot of her time in recent years to promoting the story of Hawes and working towards ensuring his buildings are preserved for future generations to enjoy. While visiting Cat Island in the Bahamas as part of a Pilgrimage in 2018, Pat met Ada who had also been baptised by Hawes. If you'd like to support Pat and Monsignor Hawes Heritage Inc. in conserving the heritage of Hawes, you can join the MHHI for just $25. Check it out here https://www.monsignorhawes.com/membership/ #hawesheritage #bahamas #monsignorhawes
02.01.2022 Light streams into the Cathedral leaving heavenly reflections on the altar and sanctuary terrazzo pavement. One of the features of the Cathedral is the different character it takes on depending on the location of the sun as it transits the day.
01.01.2022 Recently staff went on retreat to experience the remarkable architecture of Monsignor John Hawes and gain an appreciation of the significant role this remarkabl...e man played in the development of the Catholic faith in the Midwest. There is little doubt that Hawes’ work, with our support, will continue to contribute to the vibrancy of the Catholic Church. A huge ‘thank you!’ to the staff and students of Our Lady of Mt Carmel Mullewa who assisted in the day - it is much appreciated! Monsignor Hawes Heritage Centre Catholic Education WA
01.01.2022 The OBrien family were out in force for the annual Mass and Picnic in the beautiful setting of St James Chapel of Ease in Kojarena last Sunday. The chapel had been built in 1937 on land gifted to the Catholic Diocese by James and Maggie OBrien. Its no longer used on a regular basis but their offspring have conserved and maintained the building and proudly open it to the public each year. #monsignorhawes #hawesheritage
