20.01.2022 WA PAYROLL TAX CUT A BID TO BOOST ECONOMY The payroll tax exemption threshold in Western Australia has been lifted in a bid to stimulate the state economy and will result in about 1000 businesses no longer having to pay it. The state government announced on Thursday the annual threshold will be raised by $100,000 to $950,000 from January and again to $1 million one year later.... It is expected the payroll tax liability for an additional 11,000 businesses will be lower. "It will allow businesses to employ more people across our state and it will ensure we give support to those small businesses doing it tough," Premier Mark McGowan told reporters. "The only reason we can do this is because we got the budget back to surplus." The Chamber of Commerce and Industry WA applauded the move, saying the GST fix had helped the state government to rely less heavily on payroll tax. Mr McGowan conceded payroll tax was a bigger impost in WA than in some other states.
