25.01.2022 With the arrival of spring, the children at Montessori Beginnings have been exploring outside and assisting in gardening activities as the weather warms up. Gardening teaches the importance of caring for your environment, control of movement, and caring for your peers.
24.01.2022 In a Montessori environment, children are given time to explore a material of their interest. They look for challenges while they build their knowledge and create a mental order of things.
24.01.2022 The children at our Thomastown Centre have been given a demonstration on our Sandpaper Numbers. This Montessori material helps with the child’s recognition of numbers and their understanding of number formation, as the child traces each number with their fingers.
23.01.2022 The Knobless Cylinders are part of our Sensorial curriculum. The Yellow box gives children the opportunity to engage with concrete mathematical concepts such as diameter and length. It enables children to think about size from biggest to smallest as they line the cylinders up. Children are also gaining fine motor control as they manipulate the different sized cylinders.
21.01.2022 The children in our Infant Community B room, at our Hoppers Crossing Centre, have been experimenting with mixing primary colours. The children practiced their critical thinking skills and exploring cause & effect, through mixing primary colours and observing how the colours blend together.
21.01.2022 Grating chalk is a very popular and loved activity from our Practical Life area at Laverton. Children gain control of their movements and accomplish their activity in a purposeful way. There is always a process the child has to follow and the sequence of steps helps to build an orderly and logical mind.
20.01.2022 Over at Officer, the children have enjoyed dancing with friends to songs such as ‘Ring a Rosie’. They have had so much fun learning this song with their peers and this activity helps the children to develop coordination, language skills and team work.
19.01.2022 Over at our Officer Centre, we have made recycled plastic water bottles into bird feeders, to encourage native wildlife into our garden. The children painted, prepared and hung the bird feeders in small groups. This, in turn, will contribute to our Montessori learning area of Culture, focusing on zoology, botany and geography.
17.01.2022 The children at Mildura love visiting their pet turtle ‘Squirt’ and watching him grow!
14.01.2022 Rolling and unrolling the mat is a preparation activity for a child to complete prior to working with Montessori materials on the floor. This activity helps the child to concentrate and coordinate their movements as well as developing their skills and become independent.
11.01.2022 Geometric puzzles not only challenge children's motor abilities as they practice with their fine finger muscles, but also their early numeracy and literacy skills. Through their piece selections, children are engaging pattern recognition, spatial awareness and sequencing. As children explore the puzzle pieces individually, they are subconsciously learning the shapes with their hands.
10.01.2022 The team over at Laverton has created a reading corner for the children by incorporating a library of children's books. This space lends itself to the development of pre-literacy and communication skills in the child through the availability of fiction and non-fiction stories. What's your favourite children's book?
10.01.2022 In our Montessori classrooms, children have the freedom to choose what materials they want to work with. In this photo, a child is cleaning the windows which is a practical life skill taught to the children as part of caring for their environment.
10.01.2022 Working with geometric solids helps children refine their stereognosis sense by feeling the solid with their hands and forming the shape of the solid in their mind without looking at it. During this activity, children have experience with various solid shapes, including a sphere, cylinder, cube, and cone. This activity builds the child's foundation for geometry.
08.01.2022 Thank you all for your patience as we progress in the midst of COVID-19. We are still progressing with construction of the new Malvern centre and are currently on track for completion in Quarter 4, 2020. As restrictions are eased, we are getting a better understanding of when tours will be able to take place. Depending on government directives, tours are likely to commence in Quarter 4, 2020. A friendly reminder to those who haven't yet registered and wish to be contacted for a tour, please register your details at https://montessoribeginnings.com.au/
08.01.2022 The children at Mildura were very excited to harvest vegetables recently! The children gave the zucchini and tomatoes to their wonderful cook, Jo, to share with everyone.
08.01.2022 At Montessori Beginnings, we encourage the children to participate in free expression by using the chalkboard and other creative outlets.
07.01.2022 The action of adding different items to a sieve to separate them is an excellent multi-step activity that aids in developing a child’s concentration. A simple activity that can be practised at home!
07.01.2022 The children at Thomastown have been introduced to the ‘Sorting’ material according to size. This is beneficial for discrimination of different dimensions and is an extension activity.
06.01.2022 At Montessori Beginnings Mildura, the children use meal times to support their independence by serving their own meals, pouring their own drinks and using respectful manners throughout the day.
04.01.2022 By building the Pink Tower, the child develops visual discrimination of dimension. Indirectly, they refine their visual-motor coordination, their concentration & problem-solving skills and are introduced to mathematical concepts.
03.01.2022 Montessori Material 'the cylinder blocks' indirectly prepares children for writing, as they begin coordinating their fingers in a pincer grip, used for holding pens and pencils. This material also teaches children to visually discriminate between dimensions and as their competency grows, the children can begin to differentiate with touch.
02.01.2022 As part of our plan for sustainable centres, we encourage children to use renewable resources throughout their daily activities. Here we have our Mildura Nido community using a flower stem as a paint brush, to create textural paintings.
02.01.2022 The Montessori prepared environment in our Infant Community focuses on refining gross and fine movements. This child is focused on pouring from one jug to another, practising eye-hand coordination, wrist flexibility and resolution.
02.01.2022 Over at Officer, the children were lucky enough to be able to visit their local park and have a picnic lunch last week! This was a very special outing for the children as we haven't been able to get out into the community due to the Level 4 lockdown in Victoria. The children enjoyed seeing birds and dogs on their walks in the park. We were all so tired after, but we look forward to our next outing soon!
