22.01.2022 White Boards Another example of using the prepared environment to support people with dementia is using a whiteboard. Position the board at eye height in a place that is frequently accessed, like in the kitchen at home, or in a bedroom in residential care facing the bed.... The sorts of information you can include are: - Date - When you last saw each other eg Hi mum, I visited you on Tuesday 12/12 and we talked about gardening and filled up the bird bath, love Flora. This helps if they forget you have visited. - When you are next coming to visit eg My daughter, Flora, visits on Tuesdays at 5pm - Important reminders eg I need to take my tablets each morning at 8am for my sore hip or I need to wear my glasses and hearing aid to help me communicate - Schedule for the week - Any upcoming reminders / appointments The board can’t get too busy, so ensure that only the most important notices are written. If your loved one is living in residential care you may also like to include some social history information or chat topics to help staff engage your loved one in conversations, with prompts like: - I have 8 grandchildren - I am an avid football fan - I’m not an early riser! Ensure that the writing is large and legible, and use a black marker to give sufficient contrast with the white background (rather than a red or green marker) Whiteboards can be purchased from department stores or office shops. The whiteboard pictured is $15 from Kmart in Australia. Could make a lovely Christmas present for your loved one!

13.01.2022 The team at Montessori Consulting warmly thank you for your support throughout 2020! Watch this space for a FREE Montessori Christmas Scent activity template, coming soon!

13.01.2022 Hi there! Many thanks for all the lovely feedback about our Christmas Scents activity. Here is another little clip to show how to use the resource with a resident / client during a 1:1 session. After the client is sitting comfortably you can open the session (eg Beginning) with some reminiscence about Christmas, to get the client primed to the topic. There are HEAPS of questions in the booklet, so you may just choose one page (so the next time you do the activity you can u...se a different page). Then for the Middle you can do the scent smelling, following the prompts in the instructions The once the person finishes, use the End to thank them for their participation, and invite them to join you again. Enable the client to help you pack up the items back into the box if they are able. Wishing you the best of luck with your session!! Would love to hear how it goes! See more

09.01.2022 Due to the unprecedented situation we are all facing, Montessori Consulting has deferred all currently advertised workshops. On a brighter note our e-learning course is near completion. We are excited to be offering this resource as an interim measure to enable continued access to Montessori training. In addition, we are able to provide on-line mentoring and support to any of our current or new clients. Contact us at www.montessoriconsulting.com.au to express your interest ...in our new course. This is a time when the philosophy and teachings of Dr. Maria Montessori in relation to tolerance, kindness and compassion need to guide us. As we all find out way forward in this ever-changing world, let us all do it with kindness and compassion. In this time of social isolation, keeping people busy and engaged is important. A wide range of Montessori activities are available at www.dementiashop.com.au

03.01.2022 Classical conditioning Classical conditioning is a type of learning that happens automatically to create a behaviour. The most well known example is when Pavlov noticed his dogs didn’t just salivate when they received their dinner, they salivated when they saw the people who were going to feed them. He tested this theory by ringing a bell each time before the dogs were fed. Sure enough over time, when the dogs heard the bell, they started salivating, as they now associated... the bell with receiving their meal. An example in our setting is how residents often follow activity staff, as they have associated that staff member with having fun things to do! In the Montessori Approach we can use classical conditioning to assist people who are living with dementia. For example, ringing a bell to signify that their meal is ready. Not only does this provide a good resident role of lunch bell ringer, over time, residents will associate the bell with a meal, so will learn to come to the dining room independently for their meal when they hear the bell being rung, rather than having to be reminded by a team member. We had an interesting example in one care community where we had a resident with dementia who had taken a disliking to a team member. The resident loved to have lemon with her meal. So we encouraged this member of staff to be the one to give her the sliced lemon, and sure enough, the resident started associating the team member with something she enjoyed and the negative behaviour towards her decreased. So jingle bells may take on a whole new meaning!

01.01.2022 Exciting times ahead in 2021

01.01.2022 In a Montessori for Dementia and Ageing world, we say that anything that the person can no longer keep in their mind, they need in their environment. Name badges are a great example of using the prepared environment to maintain someone’s independence. You know how it feels to forget someone’s name - embarrassing, right? And how can you get someone’s attention when you don’t know their name? Have to loudly call out Oye? Or tap on the table? Have you noticed any residents ...doing this? The use of name badges can help people who forget people’s names, even those dear to them, as a result of their dementia or memory loss. So, how about trying out name badges during your Christmas functions this festive season? You could make name badges as your table place holders, print them onto labels, or set up a name badge station like the one in the photo. Ensure the badges are large print (approx size 48 point), a mixture of lower and upper case, and in a plain font (like a sans serif), with good contrast between the font and background (eg black text with white or yellow background), and no distractions (like extra pictures, stickers) Let us know how you go!
