25.01.2022 Another great week at Meriba Montessori. "There is in the child a special kind of sensitivity which leads him to absorb everything about him, and it is this work of observing and absorbing that alone enables him to adapt himself to life. He does it in virtue of an unconscious power that exists in childhood. The first period of the child’s life is one of adaptation. It is the child’s special adaptability that makes the land into which he is born the only one in which he will ever want to live." (The Absorbent Mind, p. 57)

18.01.2022 Update about the principal role at TBSS I hope that everyone is doing really well during these challenging times. Recently I was offered the position of princ...ipal at Boondall SS on Brisbane’s northside which I have accepted. I start at the beginning of Term 3. This is fantastic for my family as it now gives us some stability and certainty. It will also enable the school community to have certainty in the school’s leadership with the appointment of a permanent replacement during the year. I will always consider myself to have been unbelievably fortunate to have been part of the Trinity Beach community. Over the last eight years I have been proud to call Trinity Beach my home and to raise my family here. Trinity Beach SS gave my daughter, Lucy, the best start to school possible! I am going to deeply miss the wonderful students, the great families and the awesome staff at Trinity Beach SS. The hard work of everyone in the school can be seen in the extensive opportunities that have been given to students; the improvement in teaching and support practices; the quality of curriculum and resourcing; the improved facilities and grounds. I look forward to our paths crossing in the future Matthew Denzin

18.01.2022 Maria Montessori was born on the 31st August 1870 in the town of Chiaravalle, Italy. Her father, Alessandro, was an accountant in the civil service, and her mother, Renilde Stoppani, was well educated and had a passion for reading. The Montessori family moved to Rome in 1875, and the following year the young Maria enrolled in the local state school on the Via di San Nicolo da Tolentino. As her education progressed, she began to break through the barriers which constrained wom...en’s careers. She studied the groundbreaking work of two early 19th century Frenchmen, Jean-Marc Itard, who had made his name working with the ‘wild boy of Aveyron’, and Edouard Séguin, his student. She was so keen to understand their work properly that she translated it herself from French into Italian. Itard had developed a technique of education through the senses, which Séguin later tried to adapt to mainstream education. Highly critical of the regimented schooling of the time, Séguin emphasised respect and understanding for each individual child. He created practical apparatus and equipment to help develop the child’s sensory perceptions and motor skills, which Montessori was later to use in new ways. Montessori spent 2 years working at the Orthophrenic School, experimenting with and refining the materials devised by Itard and Séguin and bringing a scientific, analytical attitude to the work; teaching and observing the children by day and writing up her notes by night. Montessori came to realise was that children who were placed in an environment where activities were designed to support their natural development had the power to educate themselves. She was later to refer to this as auto-education. In 1914 she wrote, I did not invent a method of education, I simply gave some little children a chance to live. Children in a Casa dei Bambini made extraordinary progress, and soon 5-year-olds were writing and reading. News of Montessori’s new approach spread rapidly, and visitors arrived to see for themselves how she was achieving such results. Within a year the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland began transforming its kindergartens into Case dei Bambini, and the spread of the new educational approach began.

17.01.2022 Good afternoon from Meriba Montessori. We are waiting on an answer from the regional office to confirm the new guidelines of Meriba commencing. Hopefully I will have an answer before the end of this term. The school has asked me for numbers of children and what days you would like to attend. Please reply as soon as possible.

16.01.2022 "It is surprising to notice that even from the earliest age, man finds the greatest satisfaction in feeling independent. The exalting feeling of being sufficient to oneself comes as a revelation." Maria Montessori

12.01.2022 The Sandpaper Letters. The sandpaper letters are one of the key materials found in the language area of the classroom. They are the letters of the alphabet (lower case script) cut out and each mounted on a separate piece of wood. The consonants are mounted on red wood and the vowels on blue. In the Montessori approach, the sounds of the letters are taught before the child is introduced to the names of the letters. Research has shown that it is best to learn one thing at a tim...e. It is too much to have to remember both names and sounds. If the child is taught both the names and the sounds in the beginning, it has been found that the child gets confused when trying to sound out a word because it is difficult to remember which the letter represents. Therefore, to avoid the added difficulty, the phonetic sound of each letter is taught first, and the names of the letters are taught later. In addition, since some letters can represent more than one sound, the other sounds which are less frequently used than the phonetic sound are also taught later. In this way, the child only has to learn one sound for each letter in the beginning. The teaching of the sounds and letters is through a multi-sensory approach. The child will hear the sound, see its representation in the form of a letter, and feel the way it is written as the child feels the letter with their fingers. The process of teaching kids is called a three-period lesson, basically a lesson in 3 parts. It is a way of presenting new information to your child. ... A three-period lesson FIRST PERIOD: Name the objects. ... SECOND PERIOD: Play games. ... THIRD PERIOD: Testing What is this? See more

07.01.2022 "In her duty of guiding a child in using the material, a teacher must make a distinction between two different periods. In the first she puts the child in contact with the material and initiates him in its use. In the second she intervenes to enlighten a child who has already succeeded in distinguishing differences through his own spontaneous efforts. It is then that she can determine the ideas acquired by a child, if this is necessary, and provide him with words to describe the differences he has perceived." (Dr. Maria Montessori, 'The Discovery of the Child', Clio Press Ltd, 153)

06.01.2022 Here are some photos of the children attending independent day at Meriba Montessori. "The child has a mind able to absorb knowledge. He has the power to teach himself." (The Absorbent Mind, p. 5) We must help the child to act for himself, will for himself, think for himself; this is the art of those who aspire to serve the spirit.
