17.01.2022 When your puppy doesnt want to leave the vets! This is Rusty, a lovely German short haired pointer puppy who came in to see us a few weeks ago for his 2nd vaccination. He was very brave coming in for his contactless consult, without his owner - which we have been doing due to COVID-19. He took it all in his stride, and wanted to meet as many of the staff members as possible! Rusty performed a beautiful sit for us - as demonstrated in the photos. A very well behaved, good... natured boy. Thank you to his lovely owner for bringing him in. It is very important that puppies receive their full primary vaccine course, or it leaves them very vulnerable to parvovirus. Parvovirus is a highly infectious and contagious virus which causes most commonly vomiting, diarrhoea, inappetence and lethargy, and is often fatal. Please call us if you have any questions about your puppy/dogs vaccine schedule. See more

15.01.2022 Hi everyone! Check these guys out if youre over in Strahan with your pooch on a Tassie holiday and want to do something not dog friendly. A couple of our vets are on annual leave at the moment and Nel spent the day at daycare whilst they did the Gordon river cruise. Stormhavens were fantastic and provided a great service. Nel loved it so much, mum and dad had to buy the owl toy as a souvenir (well and she had slobbered all over it by the end of the day)

14.01.2022 This is Sooty, with one of our vets, Eilidh. Sooty is a 4 year old Maltese Terrier who has been through a lot in his short life, to put it mildly! Sooty has recently had to have his eye surgically removed (a procedure we call enucleation) due to severe glaucoma which we were unfortunately unable to control medically. Here he is after having his sutures removed, a few weeks ago. Sootys medical history is long and complex - as a very young dog, he was diagnosed (at another ...vet clinic on the mainland) with a neurological condition called Idiopathic Cerebellitis, sometimes colloquially named White dog shaker syndrome. Sooty then developed diabetes mellitus in late 2019 and since then has required twice daily insulin injections. Earlier this year, he developed cataracts in both eyes, which are a common feature in diabetic dogs. Unfortunately, Sooty then developed inflammation in his eyes (uveitis) secondary to the cataracts, which is a very unlucky and unusual complication for cataracts. This then led to a glaucoma, which is where there is a build up of pressure inside the eye. This again was a very unfortunate sequelae. Initially, the glaucoma was just in one eye, and this was successfully controlled with medical treatment. However, unfortunately, the second eye then developed the same issue a short while later, and this one was much more severe. After attempting aggressive medical treatment with no luck, we had no option but to remove the eye surgically. Luckily, dogs cope amazingly well with only 1 eye, and Sooty is much much happier since having his eye removed. He is back to his normal, noisy self, his owner describes! In short, Sootys life has been a series of very unfortunate events, however we could not have asked for a better patient. He is one of the most tolerant, well-natured dogs we have had the pleasure to look after. He takes everything in his stride and never lets out a word of complaint. We also have huge admiration for his lovely owner, who has been so committed from the start, and remained optimistic and upbeat even through the most difficult times. If it wasnt for her dedication, Sooty would not be here today. Thank you for making us smile and laugh every time you came in. We are so happy Sooty is now doing well, and hope we dont have to see him again toooo soon!

14.01.2022 Meet our team! Lucy is originally from Byron Bay where she grew up surrounded by a menagerie of pets including goats, dogs, chickens, quail, mice and even a ferret! After spending 5 months in India volunteering at an animal shelter she moved Melbourne to study the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. She graduated in 2019 and could not move to Tasmania fast enough! ... She enjoys all aspects of being a vet but has special interests in improving animal welfare and looking at parasites and other exciting things down the microscope. In her spare time Lucy loves hiking in remote places, making kimchi, playing boardgames and drinking wine on her veranda with her husband Eddy and dog Bowie.

13.01.2022 Our waiting room has been unusually quiet this last few weeks! Thank you to all of our clients for understanding and helping us to keep operating in these difficult times. A couple of staffs dogs, Nel and Tommy, werent complaining about the empty waiting room though! They were making themselves at home yesterday afternoon.

13.01.2022 Dental Month! Jett was here yesterday for a dental procedure. At 13 years old he is a bit of an old timer but he came through his procedure fantastically! Jett had a blood test performed before the surgery to check his internal organs were all functioning well. He thankfully had good blood results so was anaesthetised for a dental procedure.... As your can see in the photos there was considerable calculus build up on all of his teeth. Calculus forms when plaque hardens on the teeth and will lead to dental disease if left untreated. On the photos the large brown deposits on Jetts teeth are the calculus. Jett required 5 extractions as a result of the calculus build up getting under the gums and causing the roots to become loose. Jett was very brave yesterday and is now at home recovering with his family. Were about half way through dental month now! Dont worry theres still plenty of time to get your pets teeth checked

12.01.2022 *Important Notice * For the foreseeable future we will no longer be open on Sundays. Our revised opening hours are as follows:... Monday to Friday 0830-1930 Saturday 0900-1800 Sunday CLOSED Many thanks Montrose Vet Centre

11.01.2022 Meet our team! Here at Montrose VetCentre we have a team of 10 fantastic, knowledgeable and caring vets. While some of our vets have been part of our team for many years now (maybe longer than they would care to admit) we have had some new additions recently. Over the next few weeks we will be doing some regular posts so you can find out a bit more about all of our vets! ... To make things a bit more interesting, feel free to ask any questions about the vet (the sillier the better!) in the comments below. Alastair graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 2015 with a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery (Distinction). He and his partner, Eilidh, joined our team in July 2019 after spending 9 months working on the mainland before falling in love with Tasmania on a holiday. Alastair has an interest in small animal emergencies but enjoys the variety that working as a general practitioner offers. Outside of work Alastair enjoys playing field hockey, watching cricket (only when England win though), riding his mountain bike and spending time in the wilderness. His family have two chocolate Labradors back in the UK. Eilidh and Alastair recently adopted a puppy, Nel, who is now 6 months old. She is considerably bigger than in the photo but just as cute!

05.01.2022 Hello! We hope everyone is staying safe at this difficult time. This is a photo of two of our vets, Scott and Abbie, performing a TPLO surgery last week. A TPLO (or tibial-plateau-levelling osteotomy) is a surgery to stabilise the knee when a dog has ruptured its cranial cruciate ligament. Unfortunately cranial cruciate ligament rupture is a very common degenerative condition in dogs and as a result Scott is performing these surgeries on a weekly basis. ... You can see in this photo thats hes training Abbie in this surgery. We love their matching face masks and as a result Ive been trying to think of penguin related puns all week but unfortunately Ive drawn a blank. If anyone can help me out then please comment below!

04.01.2022 Dental Month! Chilli was very brave today for her dental procedure! Here she is recovering smoothly from her anaesthetic. Our vet, Abbie, performed a full dental assessment whilst Chilli was anaesthetised and she needed to have 5 teeth extracted due to periodontal disease! Hopefully shell feel much better after getting those diseased removed.

04.01.2022 MEET OUR TEAM! Born and raised in Singapore, Zhong Mei (or Mei) graduated from University of Melbourne in 2008. She then started work at Vet Centre in January 2009. After 3.5 years, she left Australia to return to practice in Singapore for 8 months before returning to Vet Centre again. Mei enjoys all aspects of mixed general practice but has particular interest in complex small animal internal medicine and diagnostic imaging. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her young son, man child (sorry I mean husband) and her German Wired-Haired Pointer, Sven. She also particularly enjoys playing badminton when she is not reading veterinary literature.

04.01.2022 Meet our team! One of our senior veterinarians and directors today! Scott graduated from University of Sydney last century (1996) and has been at the clinic since 1998, and became a director in 2005. He has an interest in complex surgical cases, including orthopaedics (broken bones and knee reconstructions), spinal surgery and complex soft tissue surgeries. He is in charge of managing the day to day running of the business and providing guidance to the newer vets in the clinic. When outside work, he can be found cycling and running or helping to manage his two teenage daughters.

03.01.2022 AND THE WINNING CONTINUES... All of our canine patients that underwent a dental procedure during dental month went home with a showbag full of oravet chews and Hills t/d diet. They also went into a chance to win a hamper full of goodies, including toys, treats, food and accessories to keep them smiling long after their dental clean! And the WINNER is..... BABETTE! ... congratulations Babette, we hope you enjoy your basket of goodies! See more

03.01.2022 Dental Month! We’re into our third week of dental month! Last week Pompadour and Babette came for a scale and polish how cute are they!Alice, one of nurses and poodle lover, made sure to give them both extra cuddles. When we say dental disease in dogs and cats we almost always mean periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is the infection and inflammation of the tissues surrounding the teeth. This is very common and occurs in a very simple process described below: ... 1) Animal's mouths are full of bacteria and these bacteria combine with food and saliva to form plaque. This plaque sticks to the teeth and over time as it will thicken and mineralise to form tartar (or calculus). Some plaque will be removed upon chewing but in lots of patients this tartar continues to form as the animal ages. 2) As tartar forms on the tooth it starts to develop below the gum line. This leads to inflammation of the gums (gingivitis). 3) The tartar that forms below gum line leads to breakdown of the periodontal ligament which attaches the tooth root to the bone of the tooth socket. 4) The loss of the periodontal ligament causes the tooth to become unstable and loose. If this process is left untreated this tooth will decay and fall out. Stages 2, 3 and 4 are all associated with pain and will be causing your pet discomfort. The first two steps of the above process are reversible but the last two steps lead to irrevesible damage.

03.01.2022 This is Sadie, an 8 week old Beagle pup who we saw recently for vaccination. She was so friendly and very relaxed in the consult! We try to make first visits as positive and fun as possible. Too adorable not to post!

03.01.2022 This is Ellie, a believe it or not, nearly 15 and a half year old Miniature Schnauser. Ellie has been in with us recently to have one of the toes on her hindlimbs surgically removed (a process called digit amputation) as we suspected a tumour of the digit - which was later confirmed on histopathology at a laboratory. She sailed through the anaesthetic with no problems, and what really made us smile was that the owners biggest concern was how she would manage to keep her qu...iet and rested after the surgery...at the ripe old age of 15 this isnt normally the most common concern! Ellie is an extremely bright, active 15 year old dog and is certainly showing no signs of slowing down. We have all been amazed by her resilience. Her owner claims she still cant keep up with her on the beach, and she still regularly has to buy her lots of puzzle feeders and toys to keep her mentally stimulated, even in her old age! On top of all of this, Ellie has been the most wonderful patient, who has not given a murmur of complaint. Luckily, the tumour was completely excised and in these type of tumours, excision is normally curative and they very rarely spread to distant sites in the body. Thanks again to Ellie and to her wonderful owners for bringing her in to see us. Here is a photo of Ellie with one of our vets Eilidh. We also received a video of Ellie enjoying runs on the beach again after she had recovered from her surgery! We are so so pleased you are back having fun again, Ellie. See more

03.01.2022 Dental month! Say hello to Meeka! She was here yesterday for a dental procedure with our vet Amelia. She had all of her teeth fully assessed whilst under a general anaesthetic. Thankfully no extractions were required but a scale and polish was performed. ... Meeka had stage 1 dental disease which means there was calculus (tartar) build up and gingivitis, but no damage to the tooth roots. Dental month is well underway and dont forget to contact the clinic for your dental checks or procedures

03.01.2022 Dental Month! The main symptoms we see as a result of dental disease are: - Bad breath ... - Loose teeth - Excessive drooling - Bleeding or red gums - Problems picking up food or eating - Pawing at the mouth - Facial swelling However knowing whether your pet has dental disease isn't always as easy as you think. Dental disease in our pets will invariably lead to pain. Pain can be very difficult to assess in our pets, partly because they can't talk, but also because they will commonly hide being in pain from us. I know when I've personally had a sore tooth it is incredibly sore and your pets will be feeling the same level of discomfort if they have dental disease, even if you don't think they are in pain. Your pet will typically have to have quite advanced dental disease before they start showing the signs listed above. Even if your pet isn't showing the signs of dental disease we strongly recommend taking advantage of the free nurse dental check we are offering this month.

03.01.2022 Working in the animal industry you can find yourself in all sorts of positions battling to try and take sutures out of animals who wont sit still - particularl...y crazy staffies. But not Ivy. You couldnt have a more cooperative patient. Ivy also has skin issues and makes it easy for her vets by laying on her back for a belly rub while she is examined. Here she is with Dr Eilidh yesterday for a recheck and suture removal from her second cruciate repair AND of course a cuddle. See more

02.01.2022 Long weekend vibes. We hope most of you are relaxing like these two Labradors on the public holiday. Just a reminder that we are open for emergencies today and tomorrow from 9-10 and 5-6. Hopefully Dr Abbie, assisted by nurses Courtney and Grace, will be more awake than these two lazy pooches!

01.01.2022 Meet our team! Abbie graduated from University of Qld in 2012, and has been at the clinic since mid-2013. Abbie has an interest in all medical and surgical cases, and is undertaking further training in orthopaedic procedures, and well as rehabilitation. When outside work, Abbie enjoys horse riding, and hanging out with her two cats.

01.01.2022 Dental Month!! Check out this video about dog teeth. Dont forget about dental month which is coming up very soon in August. Please call the clinic to book your free nurse dental check and any dental procedures.... Thanks! #teeth #dentalmonth #goodgirl
