20.01.2022 This is autonomous communication and one of my clients’ first novel phrase ever! LAMP was the third AAC system that we trialled and his family and I knew by the second session using LAMP, that it was the right system for him. There is no best system when it comes to AAC. One system does not suit all and it is important to have access to multiple systems when trialling AAC. ... So how did we know LAMP was the right system for him? First time seeing LAMP he started exploring. The little apple on the bottom row was the first symbol he pressed. He then found his way to the fruit vocabulary and selected plum. He immediately followed this same motor pathway but selected a different fruit. Having symbols in the same place every single time and a consistent motor pattern were the key that gave him access to communication! His next session a week later he followed that same motor pathway and found plum. His Mum and I looked at each other knowing the significance of that moment and what it meant for him! In the early days when he explored the device he remembered the pathways to the words he found and used these words functionally! He was so quick in remembering motor pathways that we rarely used vocab builder. We used word finder and following the highlighted pathway once was all he needed to learn the pathway! There are a couple of buttons he pushes repeatedly. He giggles with such delight when repeatedly pushing ‘would’ and ####. He then hits the message bar, giggles some more then clears the bar ready to talk to us. Not make house finish there. With these five words he communicated his own message. Not one he’d heard previously. Not one that had been modelled to him. His own message. True autonomous communication! #moonandstarsspeechpathology #aac #lampwfl #augmentativecommunication #assistivetechnology #everyonedeservesavoice #speechpathology #speechlanguagepathologist #instaslp #slpsofinstagram #aussieslp #privatepracticeslp

16.01.2022 "To help children with autism, we don't need to change them or fix them. We need to work to understand them, and then change what we do" - Barry M. Prizant In 2012 I was fortunate enough to undertake SCERTS training with Barry here in Adelaide. I am eagerly awaiting delivery of his new book 'Uniquely Human, A Different Way of Seeing Autism' and will share what I learn. Autistic people deserve more than just our awareness, they deserve our acceptance and celebration. #moonandstarsspeechpathology #autismacceptance #CelebrateNeurodiversity

15.01.2022 Happy Easter from Moon and Stars Speech Pathology #moonandstars #moonandstarsspeechpathology

05.01.2022 Chocolate play dough doesn’t have to be just for Easter! I had some left over so decided to use it in session with one of my favourite childrens books about baking. Back in 2011 I helped judge the Young Children category of the Speech Pathology Australia Book of the Year Awards. Can We Lick the Spoon Now? got my vote and won the category. Repetitive phrases, onomatopoeia (words that imitates the sound of something such as ‘plop’ and ‘tick tock’) and a fun and familiar storyl...ine have made this book a favourite of mine. Plus it is a fabulous book to incorporate into play. Reinforce vocabulary including verbs such as mix, whisk, scrape, whip. Retell the story as you make your own cake Sequence the steps involved in making a cake Pretend to go shopping for ingredients and then make you own cake using dough, mud, slime, kinetic sand or anything else you can think of! Have fun thinking of other onomatopoeia words as you play and throughout your day #moonandstarsspeechpathology #privatepracticeslp #speechlanguagepathology #aussieslp #slpsofinstagram #instaslp #earlyinterventionspeech #speechtherapyideas #playbasedlearning #sensoryplay #chocolateplaydough #spabookoftheyear #childrensbooks #canwelickthespoonnow

03.01.2022 When you raise anti-ableist kids you raise kids who see disability for what it is. Not as an inspiration, not as a tragedy, but simply as a part of diverse human condition.

02.01.2022 How creative and impressive are these ideas from young children to assist the boat stuck in the Suez Canal!
