25.01.2022 Have you heard about hunger cues? The visual below can help you understand early as well as late hunger cues. It can be easiest to latch a baby when they are di...splaying early hunger cues. They get increasingly agitated--and often harder to latch--the hungrier they become. A good rule of thumb in the early days? If your baby is awake, they probably want to nurse. #feedingcues #hungercues #breastfeeding #bfsupport #newbornnursing [Image: pictures of babies showing hunger cues from early to late. Text: Early cues: These mean "Im hungry" including stirring, mouth opening, turning head. Mid cues: These mean "Im really hungry" including stretching, physical movement, and hand to mouth. 17.01.2022 The umbilical cord comes equipped to handle many different situations to keep your baby safe. See how this true knot moves freely without compression? It cont...ains Whartons Jelly which is a mucous tissue that protects and insulates umbilical blood vessels. Whartons jelly, when exposed to temperature changes, collapses structures within the umbilical cord and thus provides a physiological clamping of the cord (an average of) 5 minutes after birth. Cords are coiled and protect the cord from compression and stretching. Your babys lifeline was built to be durable and accommodating to the environment inside the womb. 14.01.2022 What if we saw children sleeping on us as a positive? What if we viewed the babies who refuse to go down to nap as a sign that we need to slow down? What if we... changed our perceptions on contact naps, and instead viewed them as an opportunity to relax? Baby has just fallen asleep on me. I spend a few minutes browsing Facebook and then, my mind wonders towards the dishes piling up in the sink. The pile of laundry stacked up in the bathroom. The dust that has settled on the tv. I start to feel guilty. I start thinking about work that could be done. Or food that needs to be cooked. I try to put baby down, but no way. Baby is having NONE of it. But what if, just say, WHAT IF this is how it is SUPPOSED to be? Alright yes, we know that evolutionary babies are designed to want to be close to their mothers, but what if that is also meant to work out for the mother to rest too. Its meant to be for OUR benefit. To sit back for just a moment, and forget about everything else going on in life. To take in the beauty of our children, and REST. Rest our minds. And rest our bodies. Childbirth has put our bodies under some serious stress. And there are always a million things that need to be done before the day is over. Perhaps our babies and children needing us to be still with them is natures way of telling us to slow down for just a moment. Rest mama. Take the opportunity
12.01.2022 Have you been told that your baby is manipulating you through crying? #holdallthebabies #crying #babysigns [Image: Close up photo of a baby crying. Text: Babies arent sneaky or subversive. Their cries are communication, not manipulation.]
11.01.2022 Babies dont spoil - food spoils. Fortunately, all the brain research with babies and the early years is conclusive on this one - you cannot spoil a baby by responding when they tell us they need us. Makes you wonder wherever did we get the whacky idea that you could?

02.01.2022 A note on Moulded bras, Clothes and Getting a Deep Latch: Moulded bras can be bulky. They may not seem bulky when up over your breast, but when you unclip and ...move it down below the breast in order to latch a baby on - then they are bulky, and this bulk can affect how well a baby is able to latch to the breast. If you are wearing a top that you pull down in order to breastfeed, the same principle applies. In order to latch on well a baby needs to be lined up approximately nose to nipple with the chin touching the breast well below the nipple. Ideally the chin anchors on the breast well below the nipple, baby opens wide and reaches up and over the nipple. - see first image attached If you unclip the bra and push it well down underneath the breast, baby can still anchor their chin well down under the nipple and latch on deeply. In fact in some ways it can even help with latching on. Some of us have pert breasts with forward facing nipples, some of us dont. Some of us have breasts which are more pendulous and can have downward facing nipples. In these cases we sometimes suggest rolling up a small towel under the breast to lift the breast out and up and make latching on easier. The reason it makes latching easier is because it gives access to more breast below the nipple for baby to anchor their chin on to. What happens if you push down a bra or your top and dont get it right in under the breast? Then you get something like the 2nd image attached. Without lots of breast available below the nipple, baby has no way of deeply latching. All they can do is get their lower lip and chin in close to the nipple leading to a shallow painful latch. So if you are struggling with a deep latch, check your bra and clothes position. Try pushing them right under the breast and out of the way leaving lots of space for babys chin and lower jaw. It can create a much more comfortable feed.
