16.01.2022 I am super excited about today's #moneymonday tip... My kids were not so much at first!!! Every Friday night in our house is takeaway night, or was! It was a weekly treat for the kids and gave hubby and I a night off from cooking. But... For our family of 5 takeaway is expensive. Pizza usually sets us back roughly $50, Chinese $75 and Maccas about $60 - yes $60 in Maccas drive through. Cringeworthy really. So... much to my kid's disgust this has stopped. Not because we can't ...afford it but because this money can be used in better ways to ensure the money is working for us. Now my kids aren't going without. We've replaced takeaway night with 'make your own ... night'. So we make our own pizzas, hamburgers, chicken nuggets and chips (etc) once a week. And you know what? Now the kids have gotten used to it they look forward to being able to put together their own meals. This isn't to say we never have takeaway anymore but it is a lot less often and the kids really enjoy it as a treat when we do. How do you cut costs in your household?

04.01.2022 Electricity costs are soaring! Let's save some money! #moneymonday I almost fell off my chair when I opened my last electricity bill... Granted it was my Summer bill (January to March) and we had the ducted air-con basically running non-stop but still, I almost had to remortgage the house just to pay it! Since then, I've been a power usage nazi and have been looking at all sorts of ways to reduce our electricity bill. While I haven't gone to the extreme of turning everything ...off at the wall the easiest change I have made (and am honestly slapping myself that I didn't think of it before) is only using certain appliances during off-peak periods. Off-peak periods in Australia are usually from 10pm to 7am. So I now put a load of washing on before I go to bed and hang it out in the morning. The dishwasher doesn't run until bedtime either now. I try to put dinner in the slow cooker at night, instead of using the oven, so it's just a matter of heating it up in the microwave the next night. We have changed the timer on the pool pump to run in the early hours of the morning now. I know it doesn't sound like a lot but every little change you make adds up.
