21.01.2022 Happy International Zookeeper Day! Today we acknowledge and recognise the hard work, dedication and passion of all animal keepers and carers around the world. We say thank-you to our incredible team of Keepers who provide love and care every day to the animals they look after, as well as the education they provide to our visitors about all the animals here at the sanctuary.... Their devotion to help the survival of some of Australia’s most endangered and threatened species is truly remarkable and we can't thank them enough. Pictured are just a few of our keepers showing what zoo-keeping involves. www.moonlitsanctuary.com.au

18.01.2022 Lurking around, Lulu the Spot-tailed Quoll is a stealthy predator on the hunt for her next meal. Spot-tailed Quolls are the second largest living carnivorous marsupial after the Tasmanian Devil. They feed on medium-sized mammals including gliders, possums, rabbits and even small wallabies. They will also feed on carrion (dead animals), birds and eggs. Smaller mammals, reptiles and invertebrates can also be a tasty snack for them. www.moonlitsanctuary.com.au... #FindYourWayMorningtonPeninsula #VisitFrankston See more

14.01.2022 Over the last two months we’ve had a special group of nine Orange-bellied Parrots in quarantine for a conservation technique known as spring release. After passing two rounds of vet health checks and blood tests, the nine birds along with three others that came to us from quarantine at Adelaide Zoo, were transferred from Moonlit to Hobart and then to Melaleuca in south west Tasmania in collaboration with the Orange-bellied Parrot Tasmanian Program. After spending several days... in a pre-release aviary on site at Melaleuca, the 12 OBPs were released this morning and we expect them to join up with other OBPs, that have migrated to Melaleuca from the mainland for the up-coming breeding season. The objectives of spring release are to supplement the wild population by increasing the number of potential breeding pairs at the breeding ground to increase reproductive output, and balance any predicted bias in the sex ratio of birds returning to Melaleuca from the mainland. www.moonlitsanctuary.com.au

07.01.2022 It's the last day of 2020 and what a year it has been! We were closed more days than we were open and had to put a hold on welcoming all our wonderful international guests. 02.01.2022 Did you know that early last century flocks of over a thousand Regent Honeyeaters could be seen at a time throughout South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and southern Queensland? Today, the Regent Honeyeater is listed as Critically Endangered with fewer than 500 birds found in the wild and flocks of 20 birds being a rarity. The cause is predominately due to habitat loss. At Moonlit, we are part of a captive management program that saw 40 birds released into the wild in... 2013 and since then we have bred 5 birds. 4 of which have been returned to New South Wales for release with the next scheduled release. www.moonlitsanctuary.com.au #FindYourWayMorningtonPeninsula #VisitFrankston
