20.01.2022 So this was VERY interesting to me! When I was pregnant I did a lot of research and I found out that in females, our throat area/vocal cords and that part of o...ur body are directly connected and correlated with our pelvic floor. This means that if you relax your throat and neck during labour, your pelvic floor will relax, widen, and open as well. This makes labour much quicker, much easier, and much less painful! (Win, win, win! ) One way - and the best way in my opinion and from my experience - to open your pelvic floor using your vocal cords and your throat area, is to use your MAMA BEAR, low, primal voice when making your groaning noises during contractions! This widens, opens, and relaxes the birth canal/pelvic floor. These visual pictures make it all make more sense visually. Literally sounds: LOUD, LOW, AND BEAR-LIKE. If you do this during each contraction while relaxing your neck, your body will do the rest without resistance. It's literally like magic! And it takes the pain from: "OMG OUCH " - to, "oh okay, I got this!!!" This is how I got through labour and delivery without any meds. The pain is absolutely manageable! Us women were literally built for this. (And remember to pair this technique with proper birthing positions - NEVER on your back! Let gravity help the process and get moving.) So expecting Mama's, get your Bear Voices ready!!! You got this! (Illustrations by: @luisaalexandre )

19.01.2022 What an incredible image. Baby born en caul with what’s termed ‘born with the veil’ of the amniotic sac still intact. #Repost @photo_doula Two of my images... were published today! 18.01.2022 It was 6 years this week that I began encapsulating placenta's, so it only seemed fitting to be doing one now. This was the end result for a lovely repeat customer. Her big, healthy placenta was collected yesterday from the door of the hospital she birthed in, and this bag with her capsules and cord keepsakes were dropped back to those same doors this afternoon, from her partners hands to mine and back again. This family recieved a loyalty discount for their repeat business. I love transforming placentas into more pallatable pills. Encapsulation has given me a new perspective and respect for this usually discarded organ.

11.01.2022 Wise and true words from Gail Hart, midwife. Its the baby and the mom that starts labor most efficiently. Not drugs, not stripping membranes, not castor oil, n...ot walking, not sex, not spicy food, not pineapple, not dates, not cytotec (aka miso), not AROM. The list goes on. I'm sure you can name more. #evidencebasedbirth #improvingbirth #birthmonopoly #birthmatters #babiesmatter #momsmatter #birth "Researchers now believe that when a baby is ready for life outside his mother's uterus, his body releases a tiny amount of a substance that signals the mother's hormones to begin labor (Condon, Jeyasuria, Faust, & Mendelson, 2004). In most cases, your labor will begin only when both your body and your baby are ready." https://www.bellybelly.com.au//what-causes-labour-to-start/ See more

11.01.2022 Sharing again, just in time for Samhain/Halloween Dating pregnancy is not an exact science and there is considerable variation between women. It is norma...l that some women naturally have longer pregnancies than others. The idea that something terrible will happen if a woman remains pregnant for a moment longer than 42 weeks just isn’t true. The baby doesn’t turn into a pumpkin at midnight. It’s so important that women have full information and are able to look at the pros and cons of different courses of action before making the decisions that are right for them. Part of that is sorting the myths from the facts. This quote is from my book, Inducing Labour: making informed decisions." 05.01.2022 Talk about all the stuff. Expand it to encompass other things, other 'womens issues' like endometriosis and PCOs and menopause. Women make up half of the population so we are never as alone with our stuff as we think. Share your experience, and I can guarantee someone one day wll respond with me too, and thre you are swapping stories and tips and on it goes. You matter, what you experience matters. . . . .... PPD is post-partum depression; in Australia we commonly refer to it as PND or post natal depression. See more

01.01.2022 If you have any kind of ‘risk factor’ when you arrive at hospital during labour, usually step one is to put a cardiotograph (CTG) on you. This machine is strapp...ed on with two receivers and waist straps and displays your babies heart rate and your contraction patterns on a print out. The thought is that it would provide a first sign of a developing problem and allow prompt intervention to get your baby out quickly. Problem is that this idea has not proven effective. We’ve know for a long time that when continuous CTG is used on ‘low-risk’ women, the caesarean section rate goes up without improving outcomes for babies and now we know from current research by Small et. al in 2020 that using this machine on higher risk women doesn’t work to improve outcomes either. The link to the study is in my bio, or below for Facebook folk https://www.womenandbirth.org//S1871-5192(19)308/fulltext This is a literature review which looked at 38 different research papers including 11 randomised controlled trials, found that ‘current research evidence does not demonstrate improvements in perinatal outcome for infants born to women at risk of poor perinatal outcome when intrapartum CTG monitoring is used’. So, it’s time to ask ourselves, if it doesn’t work for low risk labour and birth and it doesn’t work for high risk labour and birth, why are we using it at all? Birth unit culture? Litigious coverage?... it’s certainly not for the benefit of women or their babies #ctg #obstetrics #obstetrician #birth @birthsmalltalk

01.01.2022 For the last fifteen years PANDA has been using a week in November to raise awareness about perinatal mental illness and to reduce stigma so those affected can ...seek help. The theme for PANDA Week 2020 is ‘Tell someone who cares’. This year, more than ever it’s vital that expecting and new parents who are struggling know they’re not alone and can reach out for help.
