23.01.2022 End of a gorgeous Saturday in the Dandenong Ranges. What a spectacular place to live and work. I like to sit down here with the duckies and turn over compost or... straw for them to get some WORMIES. Lilly still has a sore leg and is resting after much fun in the compost but ducky is still going with his murmured muffled quacks. Its a wonderfully familiar and soothing sound thats made me feel moments of contentment even if it feels like storm clouds are circling. I've been harvesting compost made earlier in the year for my tomato bed and covered it with bunny poo straw. We plant tomatoes on Melbourne cup day up here as its colder than the rest of Melbourne. Ducky has checked it all out and approves. I'm thinking of adding some lucerne hay to warm it up for cup day. I love experimenting in the garden. And listening to old gardeners tell me about the minutiae of their techniques. 21.01.2022 See you at the march!!

21.01.2022 I love adult Leopard Slugs. I got these ones to pose for me. They are mostly carnivorous and eat baby slugs and snails. Their mating is a spectacular. Baby leop...ard slugs are mainly herbivores... less spectacular. At the nursery I've been asked a lot lately about slugs and snails. As a permaculturist I don't use poisons or pellets so I've written a few tips below How to stop slugs and snails eating EVERYTHING. There's nothing worse than spending a fortune on seeds and seedlings only to have them wiped out by our slimy friends. Some quick tips: Before you start, place half lettuces in the area you want to plant. Give the area a good water before dusk. Go out after dark with a torch - head torches are good - and pick off the slugs and snails. Ducks and chooks will love them. If you're not keen on doing this you can put them in a part of the garden where they can eat whatever they want. Frogs and lizards will probably move in to take advantage of the food source. Repeat nightly for at least a week. Keep going until the area is denuded. Place beer traps near the lettuce for the ones you miss. I use coopers red, they love it. Don't bother with light beer, they just drink and drive home. Search for them during the day in likely places. They sleep in cool and moist spots. Bill Mollison once told me that they live in fire retardant plants because they cant escape a fire quickly. Try the side of stones facing into the garden bed, inside ceramic pots and plastic tubing, stacks of plastic pots. Look under anything that looks nibbled. Once your seedlings are in you can protect them overnight with a sealed container (dont use a plant pot because slugs get through the holes). Or you can cut the bottom off a plastic bottle and cover plants. At night you will find tiny slugs climbing on them. Take the covers off in the morning.
