13.01.2022 Member Profile- PAULA Why I joined SES: During the Black Saturday fires, I remember feeling helpless at being unable to help except by donating money. I wanted to change that, so when my daughter got her driving licence and I had more time on my hands, I joined the SES. ... My role within the unit: I’m part of an operational crew. That means attending call-outs, community education and undertaking regular weekly training. I’m also the unit duty officer one day a week. This role involves talking to the members of the public about jobs they have rung in, making assessments about the best way to deal with them, and organising resources accordingly. A bit about me: I migrated from the UK 15 years ago. I’ve always volunteered whenever I’ve had the time. In the UK, at an animal rescue and with the Police, and in Australia, with Riding for the Disabled and for the past 5 years, SES. I live with my partner and our new puppy, and I keep my horse just down the road. I have an adult daughter who luckily shares my passion for horses and dogs! Occupation: For my regular job, I am the accounts manager at Sandringham Yacht Club and I also look after the accounts of a few local companies since COVID hit. As my day job is very desk based, I love heading out with SES to do things I never normally get to do, like driving the truck or managing the traffic! What is it like to be a volunteer? Being part of SES has really given me a sense of belonging. There is a real feeling of mateship and camaraderie. We are all from such different backgrounds, but we all have something in common. We will all get up in the middle of the night to go and look for someone’s missing family member, or to make our community a little bit safer in times of trouble. In the midst of the horror of the last fire season, I was finally able to help by spending a week at one of the Incident Control Centres down in Orbost. Although horrendous circumstances, it felt good to be part of the team and to be in a position to help.

11.01.2022 Member Profile - JESS Why I joined SES: I have always had a strong interest in and respect for emergency services and search and rescue operations. Volunteering for SES appealed to me since it gave me the opportunity to be a part of something bigger than myself and the chance to become involved in an important part of our local community in the area. An added bonus is that I have always felt deeply connected to nature and enjoyed storms (the non-destructive kind); ...Continue reading

09.01.2022 At the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month...we will remember them At 11 am on 11 November 1918 the guns on the Western Front fell silent after more than four years of continuous warfare #wewillrememberthem #wewillremember #remembranceday #lestweforget2020

08.01.2022 Due to the nature of COVID-19, in recent times we’d taken a break from face-to-face skills maintenance and training to focus only on responding to emergencies. From this week, you might see us back out undertaking training in small groups to ensure we have the essential skills and capability required to respond to an emergency. Emergency services as a permitted industry are able to conduct critical training and exercising under the directions, as endorsed by the Vic...torian Chief Health Officer. Our crews are following all the COVIDSafe principles, wearing masks and working hard to ensure we are there for our community. The way we now train has changed so you may see us out and about on Monday nights. If you do give us a wave #bayside #kingston #volunteers

02.01.2022 Member Profile - Kris Why I joined SES To use my practical skills to help the community ... My role in the Unit Crew leader: managing one of our 3 duty crews to respond to request for assistance. Section leader of training: working with the training team to organise and deliver training to our unit. A bit about me I'm a leading hand carpenter during the day working on domestic and commercial projects. When I'm not working or on call for the SES I relax by either going camping/4WDing or going to music concerts. What is it like being a volunteer It can be disruptive at times to your family and social life but the unit members become your family that you are happy to see. The jobs can be a rewarding when you have members of the public coming and giving you a hug while crying because you made a difference to their life you realise that volunteering with the SES is one of the most fulfilling things you can do with your life.
