24.01.2022 COVID-19 impact on Cat and Dog arrivals into Melbourne International Airport, Australia The Premier of Victoria, Mr Daniel Andrews, has requested that for the f...ollowing two weeks international flights will be diverted from arrival into Melbourne Airport. This will have a direct impact on the importation of companion animals arriving on international passenger flights. The Victorian State government has also decided to reimpose stage three lockdown restrictions due to COVID-19. The lockdown will be imposed in 10 postcodes across Melbourne from 11.59pm, Wednesday 1 July 2020. The current COVID-19 pandemic does not change the existing risks posed by diseases of biosecurity concern to Australia or the need for cats and dogs to meet the import permit conditions in full. This includes the requirement for cats and dogs to arrive directly into Melbourne International Airport, excluding dogs and cats exported from New Zealand, or dogs holding an assistance dog permit. The department may consider re-exporting or euthanising animals that do not fulfill this requirement. The department is working with all animals diverted mid-flight to establish alternative arrangements. The department requests that no animals be loaded for transport to Australia until confirmation that flights can land at Melbourne Airport. Animals cannot be transhipped to Melbourne on a domestic flight from another Australian port. Pet importers and owners must secure an airline booking directly into Melbourne Airport and are advised to confirm both the flight arrival date and the PEQ reservation date to receive their animal before being exported to Australia. Please email [email protected] if you wish to amend a PEQ reservation due to flight disruptions. The PEQ facility is located in Mickleham, which is one of the 10 postcodes in lockdown from 11.59pm, Wednesday 1 July 2020. Please check relevant state or territory government websites for interstate travel movement restrictions. Pet importers and owners will continue to be responsible for arranging the collection of their animals from the PEQ whether in person or by engaging the services of a local pet transport company. Importers are encouraged to check our website regularly for up to date information as import conditions can change without notice.

08.01.2022 Malaysia is now a non-compliant country to export dogs and cats directly into Australia. Official notice from the Department of Agriculture 38-2020 - Suspensio...n of Direct Importation of Dogs and Cats from Malaysia to Australia 12 March 2020 Who does this notice affect? All importers of cats and dogs from Malaysia. What has changed? Malaysia is no longer considered an approved country for the export of cats and dogs to Australia. Under the recent Suspended Goods Determination, importation of cats and dogs directly from Malaysia to Australia is suspended. Purpose To advise importers of cats and dogs of changes to conditions for import from Malaysia to Australia. Policy Australia’s biosecurity requirements for the importation of dogs and cats from approved countries is based on the 2013 Importation of dogs and cats and their semen from approved countries: Final policy review. Consistent with advice on 7 February 2020 on the department's website, Malaysia is no longer considered an approved country and direct imports of cats and dogs from Malaysia were paused. In order to formalise this change in status, a Biosecurity (Suspended GoodsCats and Dogs Malaysia) Determination 2020 was made by the Director of Biosecurity under subsection 182(1) of the Biosecurity Act 2015 (the Act) and came into effect on 12 March 2020. The Suspended Goods Determination does not affect cats and dogs being imported from other countries transiting through Kuala Lumpur International Airport en route to Australia, or cats and dogs originating in Malaysia that are being prepared, certified in and imported to Australia from other approved countries. Prospective importers may import their cats and dogs to Australia by following the department’s step by step guides for approved countries. Options for import of cats and dogs from Malaysia The options to import your cats/dogs include: Move your cats/dogs from Malaysia to a group 3 approved country of your choice and follow the relevant group 3 approved country step-by-step guide. OR Move your cats/dogs from Malaysia to a group 2 approved country of your choice and follow the relevant group 2 approved country step-by-step guide. The group 2 import conditions include a mandatory 180 day residency requirement immediately before the date of export to Australia. OR Move your cats/dogs from Malaysia to a group 2 or 3 country of your choice and follow the relevant non-approved via approved country step-by-step guide which includes the requirement for a blood sample collected in the non-approved country (i.e. Malaysia) to be sent to an OIE (World Organisation for Animal Health) rabies reference laboratory or the Australian Animal Health Laboratory. The 180 day waiting period will commence from the date the sample arrives at the OIE rabies reference laboratory or the Australian Animal Health Laboratory. This is offered as a concession step only and the cats/dogs will still need to move to an approved country to undergo a confirmation Rabies Neutralising Antibody Titre Test and complete all other preparations required per the non-approved via approved country step-by-step guide. Please note, prospective importers will need to apply for an import permit for the relevant approved country of export and provide all supporting documentation required for the department to assess the application. 06.01.2022 Warning to all pet transport people Have been speaking with associates and we are noticing that bookings are being made to regional ports involving two flights.... Second flights are being cancelled and likelihood of pets being stuck mid way and then having to stop where they are and unable to continue their journey to final destination. If this continues there is a high chance that airlines will stop pets flying altogether. Please be careful and consider the implications if this was to occur with your booking.
