17.01.2022 HOW TO BE A PARENT YOUR CHILD WANTS TO TALK TO When your child is struggling, how do you respond? You may be tempted to put a Band-Aid on the situation, but we...ll-meaning statements like "Don't be upset" or "Cheer up!" are often counterproductive and can make your child feel alone or ashamed. Instead, try empathizing with your young one by stepping into their world. Relate to them and validate their emotions. This could sound like "I'm sorry you're feeling discouraged. I remember feeling the same way when I was your age. Tell me more about this." Empathy leads to empowerment. When your child knows you hear and understand them, they're more likely to communicate with you. Your relationship will be enriched. 12.01.2022 Free Mindfulness Resources: It's been a while since I last watched Play School, but I was lucky enough to come across this fabulous special episode entitled 'Mi...ndfully Me' recently. Have you seen it? (Spoiler alert: Big Ted starts to lose it...) While it's been developed for our littlies, it comes with its own parent/educator tip sheet, filled with mindfulness activities to share with our children (and that will undoubtedly help our older kids and our frazzled adult brains too). I'll pop the links below. This is such a great resource - feel free to share it along... 12.01.2022 While fighting back tears, one young lad in a workshop at Knox Grammar School said, "Hey Bro, I wanted to apologise for how I snapped at you that time at school.... I had so much going on at home, my brother was really sick and I wasn't coping with it well." An emotional conversation unfolded as mates reconciled and others in the workshop shared personal stories of sick family members and how each of them navigated those difficult times. One student had sat quietly, just listening in on the discussion. I asked for his thoughts. Without hesitation he said, "I haven't heard men speak like this before, others nodded in agreement, It's really nice to see him be able to apologise." Too many young blokes don’t ever see men talk honestly and openly. Outdated stereotypes from previous generations, means that open, honest conversations may have never been modelled to us by our dads, uncles and grandfathers. It’s not their fault. How are you supposed to do something when you’ve never seen it done before? It’s courageous young blokes like these, and the many men we meet that are taking the charge and building their emotional muscle. Giving the men of tomorrow a chance to know know what healthy masculinity looks like. It's convos like this that remind me just how privileged I am to play a role in Tomorrow Man workshops. - Matt Want to help build emotional muscle and introduce conversations like this in your school? We can help. Whether it's in school, in the workplace, community or sporting club. Wherever blokes gather, we can be there. Face to face or virtually. 09.01.2022 Quote of the Day

06.01.2022 This lovely book arrived today. The heavy bag follows a little girl called Enid who has just lost her Granddad. As Enid goes out for a walk with lots of differe...nt emotions whooshing around inside her head she feels the weight of the heavy bag that she is carrying. Along her journey, Enid comes across different kinds of people who encourage her to talk about how she is feeling. With each meeting she offloads an item from her bag that represents a stage of grief and talks about how she is feeling. Inevitably, as she takes each item from her bag, it feels lighter and she can walk along her journey easier. See more

02.01.2022 There's no such thing as a gendered feeling. I'm sad that boys still get told that they shouldn't cry and girls who are assertive and who want to lead are "bossy". Teachers and parents, you can download and print here: http://elisegravel.com//all-feelings-are-for-everyone-fre/
