Farm machinery and aircraft regularly collide with power poles and lines resulting in power outages and damage to both power networks and farming equipment. Moree Plains Shire Council, together with Safework NSW and Shane Webcke, is hosting an event open to all members of the community to learn more about putting safety first in the workplace. The current economic climate in the Moree Plains is challenging businesses and farming enterprises like never before but the need to remain vigilant and committed to safety in the workplace remains ever present. Councils General Manager Lester Rodgers is only too familiar with the challenges facing employers, with Council being the largest employer in the Moree Plains and having over half the workforce working on infrastructure sites across the Shire on a daily basis. Nearly three-quarters of all workplace fatalities in NSW occurred in three industries; agriculture, forestry and fisheries; transport, postal and warehousing and the construction industry. Workplace incidents, accidents and fatalities continue in unacceptable rates across NSW but it is hoped that this event will provide a timely reminder for locals that at the end of the day we all want to, and deserve to, go home safe to our families, Mr Rodgers said. Shane Webcke will be lending his voice to the campaign, having been personally touched by a workplace fatality. Tragically, Shanes father was killed in a Queensland workplace incident in 1994. Shane was only eighteen. He had just started his professional football career under the guidance of Wayne Bennett when he received the news that his world had been ripped apart. Shane s direct experience with the horrific outcome of his fathers workplace fatality, has led him to his role as a safety ambassador. He shares his message in the hope it will motivate others to put safety first, always. Join us to hear Shane talk about his own experience in the realm of workplace safety as well as life after football and Mens Health. Safework NSW will also be joining us to explain how they can assist businesses. They have multiple services to support businesses from rebate programs, events, advisory visits and workshops. The evening will also bring together a range of resources covering key safety topics as well as featuring Council safety-related services in relation to asbestos, waste disposal, road safety and chain of responsibility.
