15.01.2022 *Message from the Mayor Cr Annalivia Carli Hannan* This morning I was honored to attend a blessing and pastoral visit by His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia at St Basil’s Home for the Aged in Victoria. Most of us would have seen St Basil's in the media at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. What the residents, staff and wider St Basil's community endured was heartbreaking. ... This morning I felt pleased to be part of their small steps to recovery where kindness and working together will be key. I encourage you all to continue to be kind, recover and rebuild as a community.

15.01.2022 Hey Anisa! Tell us a bit about yourself and Emaan: I'm the director of EMAAN alongside my Mum, Zurlia, who founded the business 16 years ago. EMAAN is a clothing & books store inspired by Islam to be ethical and environmentally conscious in our products and business practice. Aside from my work, I also study Arabic, love going on bike rides and chilling with a great book and a cup of chai. What does Wear your Values mean?... Given the environmental degradation and exploitation of workers that is prevalent in the global fashion and retail industry, it's important that we not only believe in certain values but also act on them. Our "Wear Your Values" business model is a simple 4 step process that we follow with our customers to ensure that we can be ethical at every step of the product cycle from conception, to when it is sold, to when it's no longer used. Shopping can often be a mindless experience, and this model empowers our customers to be more conscious in their consumption. What does community mean to you? A community suggests a sense of togetherness that is built on mutual dependency. I've enjoyed seeing the community in and around Sydney Road evolve over the years. The range of shops, people, food and experiences are the building blocks that make this community so vibrant and unique. Why is it important for people to support each other and buy local? I think the lockdown and restrictions have exposed how vulnerable and dependent we are on each other. Nothing less than a collective effort to uplift each other will be needed to recover from the ramifications of covid-19. Behind every small business is a person/s who's invested so much into their community and that's why it's so important to shop local and keep the jobs, wealth and all the other benefits that come from local business within our communities. What are you best known for? We're known for our modest clothing which is designed in Australia and made ethically in Turkey. We're also known for our books which have become increasingly popular, as more people are spending time reading at home during the lockdown period. https://emaan.com.au/ ---- This is part of our Love Moreland Buy Local campaign. Head over to our website www.lovemoreland.com.au and check out our interactive business map of all the amazing businesses in Moreland. A digital community dedicated to supporting our amazing local businesses. #lovemoreland #buylocal #moreland Business Moreland
