01.01.2022 Commercial fishers are preparing for the coming winter net fishery season on Queensland beaches. A small number of fishers hold a licence for the ocean beach ne...t fishery. The licence limits when and where they can fish, what fish they can catch and the size of their nets. Crews launch small boats into the surf and shoot a seine net around schools of mullet which have emerged from southern estuaries to the coast. The nets are hauled back to the beach, the catch sorted, boxed and sent to market. The beach becomes a very busy workplace with heavy loads and moving vehicles. Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol is reminding beachgoers to keep a safe distance from fishing operations and be aware that fishing is imminent when the orange-coloured flags are up. It is an offence to obstruct a fishing operation and on-the-spot fines can be imposed. You are welcome to watch this amazing fishery and learn about the process, but keep a clear, safe distance when it’s time for the crews to go to work.
