25.01.2022 Today we joined our member club Camperdown Angling Club and the Victorian Fisheries Authority to help stock 60,000 Chinook salmon fry into Lake Bullen Merri. ... Earlier this year, Lake Bullen Merri also received a stocking of brown trout and rainbow trout. We've heard reports that the lake is fishing quite well at the moment with some good sized chinook salmon hooked by local anglers.

23.01.2022 A recent fishing trip isn't one Alex Georgopolous will forget anytime soon cos this fish has pocketed him a cool $10,000! He caught the tagged brown trout at La...ke Purrumbete, near Camperdown, at 8.30am on Sunday using a fly he tied himself called The Inducer, fished fast on a sinking line. None of Alex’s mates had accepted his invitation to join them on the overnight trip, but he was quickly sending a video of his fish to one of them. Check the tag mate, check it properly, it could be one of those golden tags was the suggestion over the phone from Stu. Sure enough Stu was right and the fish was a winner! Alex has fished Purrumbete a lot over the years with his last brown a 9lb thumper, caught on the same fly as this prize-winning fish. He loves the scenery and the chance of a trophy fish at any moment. Alex plans to spend his winnings on more fishing trips around country Victoria. Lots of people have done it hard this year, so what better way to spend the money than with the people in the country who need a hand. We agree Alex and that’s exactly the aim of the Golden Tag competition, which recommenced recently and expanded beyond bushfire affected areas in the North East and Gippsland. Learn more, including how to claim a prize if you catch a Golden Tagged fish, at www.vfa.vic.gov.au/goldentag #goldentag #winner #Purrumbete #target1million

21.01.2022 Macquarie perch are a special fish and they need our help to recover to previous population levels. Thats why were working with recreational fishers, DELWP ...and CMAs to bring the Maccas back! Well be ramping up our breeding program at Snobs while land and water managers continue efforts to restore habitat and undertake targeted monitoring, translocations and research. Several populations have tagged Maccas swimming about so if you catch one, record its details and ring the phone number on the tag. Catch limits and closed waters are another way were all helping Maccas rebound. They can only be taken from 2 waters in all of Victoria, where a minimum size of 35cm and a closed season from 1 October to 31 December each year applies. The two waters are Lake Dartmouth and its tributaries, where a bag limit of 1 applies, and the Upper Coliban Reservoir and its tribs where a bag limit of 2 applies. They must be released immediately in all other lakes and rivers, including the Ovens River where Maccas are being successfully reintroduced. If we all do our bit then Victorias precious Macca population will make a strong comeback and our kids will more often encounter this wonderful native species. Remember, under current restrictions fishing is only allowed by those in regional Victoria, at the closest available location to your home and with one other person or household members. #Maccas #recovery #nativefish

17.01.2022 You’ve gotta love when a new spot delivers the goods on your first visit. Not only did Borce Petreski’s new fishing spot deliver plenty of fish, he left it $2...,000 richer! Borce lives in Melbourne’s northern suburbs and regularly goes up to the Goulburn River on a day off. This time his cousin suggested they try a new spot, just near the bridge at Thornton. Arriving about 9am they fished from the bank, Borce casting a spinner and enjoying perfect weather conditions. It’s a nice part of the river, nice calm stretches of water and the weather was very good so it was quite relaxing until we landed the fish! They’d been fishing for 30 minutes or so when Borce landed their first fish of the day. He didn’t have his glasses on, and just thought it was a nice looking rainbow. But his cousin was onto the glimmer of a golden tag and told him to check it to see if he was a winner and after closer inspection Borce was in luck! Borce has been fishing for most of his life after growing up close to a lake in his native Macedonia, but admits he has never caught a fish quite like this one! We had a variety of fish at home like carp, roach and trout. Now I also fish for Aussie salmon in the salt water, I love the way they fight, it’s good fun. Borce says he’s planning to use his money to go away for a weekend, which is exactly what Golden Tag aims to achieve getting fishers out into regional Victoria, supporting local businesses. This mapping tool can help identify licens...ed and unreserved Crown land that we recfishers can legally access. Like us, you can also use the tool to locate areas that have been illegally blocked or locked off that we can bring forward to Government to investigate and resolve. The Victorian Government has committed to guarantee access to fishing and camping on crown land that have grazing licences and river frontage. Now is the time to bring forward any access blackspot areas. https://mapshare.vic.gov.au/mapsharevic/

08.01.2022 Look out for trout! The Mitta Mitta River is getting more fish habitat! A project to provide much needed habitat at Katie Peters Reserve is going ahead thank...s to your fishing licence fees. The North East CMA has grabbed a grant of more than $40,000 as part of the 2019/20 round of rec fishing grants. Theyll be supported by local fishing clubs and the Australian Trout Foundation Inc, which has led several recent projects in the north east. ATF president Terry George said the organisation would provide volunteers to assist in restoring the health of the riverbank at the reserve, having also helped identify the location. The project includes boulder seeding to provide an area of variable flow for fish to have a spell and a feed. Lunkers (logs installed into undercut banks) will also be used to give the rivers trout and blackfish spots to hide out in. The Katie Peters Reserve is named after a firefighter who was tragically killed in the 2013 Harrietville bushfires and grew up on a dairy farm at nearby Tallandoon. To learn more about all the projects to score funding in the latest round of grants, visit vfa.vic.gov.au/feesatwork2020 #yourfishinglicencefeesatwork #fishhabitat #mittamitta
