16.01.2022 Mum’s push to put smiles on 100 Monash Children’s Hospital faces this Christmas Sports mad East Bentleigh boy Riley Sinclair’s world came crashing down in October 2018 when doctors told him he had to indefinitely quit all his favourite contact activities after he was diagnosed with leukaemia. His mother Tammy Sinclair said the shocking news came after Riley who had just signed up to play in basketball suffered an eye injury from a velcro toy he won at the Seymour Show.... The ball accidentally hit his face causing unusual swelling around his eye. This prompted Ms Sinclair to get it checked and what followed was something no parent is ever prepared for- Riley had leukaemia. What followed was rigorous testing, chemotherapy, radiation, needles, pain medications, infections, antibiotics, reactions, consultations, sleepless nights and constant worry. It’s enough to push anyone, let alone a child to the brink. But in 2020 things took a turn for the worse, with Riley suddenly losing his dad. It’s just Riley and me now, Ms Sinclair said. It’s been extremely difficult and the only reason I get through it is because of this beautiful little boy who is my superhero. With Riley still on chemotherapy and Ms Sinclair on her own, she still finds herself compelled to help others. During one of Riley’s first stays at the Monash Children’s hospital, he was visited by Supertee and their band of superhero costume entertainers. Supertee is an exciting new charity which makes an award winning medical garment cleverly disguised as a superhero costume. Made with cotton fabric the costume features side and shoulder openings and a cape that doubles as a bib. It has made life a little more comfortable and convenient with the multitude of drips, monitoring cables and central lines. They are given for free from the generosity of others to families fighting the toughest of situations. Ms Sinclair said she hopes to fundraise to gift 100 families at Monash with a costume of their very own. Supertees come complete with comic book, stickers and all in a reusable tin box for $45. You can donate a supertee at www.supertee.org.au and enter From a friend of Riley in the purchase comment section. If you wish to follow Riley’s journey, you can do so at Riley's Kicking Goals Pictured is Riley Sinclair, the Supertee team and mum Tammy.
