12.01.2022 NEGLECT IN KEW ASYLUM. Saturday, 3rd of September, 1910. Mr. Beazley drew the attention of the Victorian Legislative Assembly, on Wednesday, t...o a dreadful instance of neglect and mismanagement in the Kew Asylum. He said he had been furnished with full particulars of a very horrible story too horrible to tell fully, and so sad to all concerned that he would not mention to the House the names of the parties. It related to the case of an idiot boy who had died in the asylum, and whose body was kept for some days until it became in a filthy state. He would give full particulars to a proper tribunal, but could not bring himself to state them in the House. The boy died at 3.10 p.m. on the 16th of August, and the body was not removed for burial until 11.30 p.m. on 25th of August. The Treasurer: Was there a post mortem? Mr. Beazley: Yes. The man who went to see the body was horrified. I think there should be a full inquiry. I am told it is not the first case of the kind. The Treasurer: Such things should not be possible. If you will give me the details I will see that a swift and searching inquiry is held. Friday the 9th of September, 1910 ASYLUM BURIALS. CASE OF UNDUE HASTE. MR. BEAZLEYS COMPLAINTS. Following upon his recent complaint regarding the remarkable delay in the burial of a patient who died in the Kew Asylum, Mr. Beazley, when speaking in the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday, alleged that in another case, which had come under his notice, such extraordinary haste had been displayed in removing the body of a patient from the institution for burial that the pathologist who went to the asylum mortuary to conduct the post mortem examination found that the body was gone. The Premier (Mr. Murray), when interviewed yesterday, said he had received a report from the inspector-general for the insane (Dr. Ernest Jones), which showed that an officer who was temporarily in charge of the asylum mortuary at Kew had allowed the body to be removed by the undertaker before the post-mortem had been held. The pathologist subsequently examined the body at the undertakers establishment. Both the cases referred to by Mr. Beazley had occurred at about the same time. He did not think that they were sufficient cause for the appointment of a Royal commission, as suggested by Mr. Beazley. Tuesday the 27th of September, 1910: KEW ASYLUM COMPLAINTS. The Chief Secretary has received from Dr. Jones, Inspector General of the Insane, a report on the private inquiry which he held at Kew Asylum into the circumstances connected with the undue delay in the burial of the body of one deceased patient, and the undue haste in respect to the interment of another patient. Dr. Jones has requested that the report be laid before Parliament, and Mr. Murray will probably comply with the request, as the complaints regarding the delay and the haste, respectively, were made in the House by Mr Beazley.
