22.01.2022 We don’t have many members here at the moment but I’m going to use this page to share some food security ideas with the Tyabb community, very relevant to the cu...rrent health crisis we are experiencing. What we are experiencing at the moment is very relevant to the Transition Methodology. We’ve recently noticed that our food system isn’t coping. Add to this the fact that people are losing their jobs and we have a food security problem. On a recent supermarket trip it was easy to notice the empty shelves in the protein section of the store. For many years I’ve been fascinated by local community enterprises and social resilience projects that involve food such as food swaps and fruit exchanges. Unfortunately we can’t get together in groups to swap the access fruit and vegetables we’ve grown in our gardens but perhaps we could try something different. I’ve noticed that there are a number of fruit trees in Tyabb with an abundance of juicy lemons and oranges and apples on the trees and an equal amount of fruit rotting on the ground. I’m sure there are a number of backyard gardeners, especially since the Bunnings seed section is empty, who will have an abundance of vegetables that they may wish to exchange so that the family can eat a variety of foods. The old library at the Tyabb hall is still empty and unused and would make a great place to set up an honesty store similar to the roadside honest shops we occasionally see in country areas. BUT, considering what we’ve been seeing in the toilet paper isles, we may need to ask for volunteers to supervise the store, say three or four people per day? I recon that in some instances the fruit is going to waste because the elderly owner of the fruit tree cannot harvest the fruit. This is a perfect opportunity for volunteers to get out of the house and help us to pick the fruit, share a fair amount with the trees owner and deliver the excess to the food swap/fruit exchange. BYO PPE Please share this post with local Tyabb resident you know who might want to help out, to contribute excess fruit and vegetables, pick excess fruit or supervise the exchange. If we can get any interest, we will communicate with the council to gain access to the room and any support the council can help. Being aware of the local Health, Hope and Happiness policy, which includes details of the shires food security policy means that the council has already committed to helping communities to develop such projects. http://www.circlesoffood.org/urban-and-regional-food-decla/
