23.01.2022 We have had a few people ask about saddle care again so we thought we would re post this. MORROWMADE Saddle Care Your new saddle has been oiled twice and had saddle dressing applied to the fender backs. How frequently you oil your saddle will depend on how often you ride, plus the climate and weather you are in. Failure to oil frequently will make the leather prone to cracking; conversely over oiling will weaken and stretch the leathers fibers making it limp and floppy, it al...so allows it to collect dust which has an abrasive effect on the leather. . "Remember too much oil can be worse than too little." Before oiling clean off all dirt and dust off with a soft brush or damp cloth and saddle soap. Always ensure saddle is dry before lightly oiling with pure neatsfoot oil. Don't place in the sun. As oil has no waterproofing abilities a light coat of a good quality saddle dressing can be applied after the oil has soaked in, giving special attention to fender backs and anywhere the saddle comes into contact with sweat or moisture. In areas where rain is unavoidable the saddle should be given a protective coating of leather dressing as often as necessary. This also applies to extremely dry conditions. If your saddle gets wet let in dry in a warm dry area never in direct sunlight. Try and store your saddle on a stand when not in use, if it must be on the ground place on its side so the fenders and seat jockeys lay straight. To keep your saddle in a safe working condition, periodically check stirrup leathers, latigos & cinches for wear and if in doubt of the safety of your saddle, have any worn parts replaced. Try to use as clean a saddle blanket and pad as possible, as well as a clean front cinch. If the saddle gathers mildew during the rainy season clean it off regularly as it will also do the leather damage. A little care will repay you well in the form of many years of good service. 15.01.2022 Here's another visual of the effect of padding on a saddle, not just a tree. First, there is the saddle with no padding, then with 1/2" folded wool blanket. The... pad after that is a 7/8" wood felt pad. You can clearly see that the front lifts more than the back and that increases with an increasing amount of padding. Note: When altering pictures digitally, even just by drawing lines on them, it is very easy to make your point by how you alter the pictures. I tried very hard on these to make sure the bottom of the line touched the top of the horn and the cantle as close to the same as I could. But even without the lines, you can see the relative change in height compared to the log in the background, so I have included the original pictures so you can see for yourselves. See more
