21.01.2022 It was a great Working Bee this Saturday & very informative, with an overview of what invasive grasses to remove & which plants to preserve. Damon from the Inner West Council gave us a tour of what species to look out for & how to tackle them. Generally the idea is to prevent the grasses from seeding into the next season. Ideally pull out the whole plants without spreading the seed & dispose of them in the compost piles that are under the black plastic bags located at each fa...r end of the garden. One can also cut off the seed heads & bag that if pushed for time, but better to remove the whole plant if possible. Some plants have stubborn tap roots that are easier to pull out after rain. So here we have it, the good, the bad & the not-so-ugly, in order of priority, to focus mainly on the top 3: 1. Vulpia: Bad, currently seeding, so should be top priority to remove 2. Oat grass: Bad, type of Bromus thats quite easy to pull out 3. Bromus: Bad, has just started to seed 4. Pennisetum: Bad 5. Burr Medic: Bad, becomes dense ground cover with burrs, best to tackle after rain 6. Flat weed (like dandelion): Bad, best to tackle after rain 7. Briza: Bad 8. Trad (tradescanthia): Bad, masquerades as the good plant Commelina. It has a white flour, no purple hue on its stem 9. Commelina: Good, purple-blue flower, with a purple hue on its stem 10. Kangaroo grass: Good 11. Echidna grass: Good 12. Native geranium: Good 13. Native violet: Good 14. Seaside daisy: Good by consensus - good for bees & if pulled there would be a bare patch for weeds
