23.01.2022 MEET THE MANAGER - Over the next few weeks we will be introducing the team behind your apparel. There's no better place to start than the boss himself - Ian Mortimer. How did Mortimer Apparel come about? I was already in the industry, but to be honest I was a terrible sales rep. I felt a responsibility to my customers to control the whole process, quality, delivery, service, price etc...I saw a gap in the market where we could provide quality apparel while keeping over...heads low so our customers were paying for the product without the extra costs that come with city warehouses, flash cars, inflated salaries etc. When did you start Mortimer Apparel? My wife Rebecca and I started Mortimer Apparel in 2011. Head office was our red brick single car garage that my father Chris helped renovate in Wagga. We added a doorway, cut in two windows, found some second hand carpet and built a clothing rack. Top 3 lessons learnt as a business owner so far? Be yourself Employ "the person" not "the skill set" Empower staff to trust their own judgement I have learned quite a lot over the past 10 years and have loads of respect for people who have built successful startups. Favourite part of your job within MA? Growing our culture, it's a lot like a sporting team really. I love seeing our staff take responsibility for a task and use their individual talents to produce a great result for our customers. Favourite MA garment? Can I have two? Our hybrid walk shorts and Mortimer Apparel caps. I wear them both flat out. Favourite sport/sports team? Wagga Magpies JRLFC, my Grandparents Ian and Elaine were involved in starting the club in 1964 and our 3 children are third generation Magpies. Describe MA in one word? Fair

21.01.2022 10 YEARS 2021 marks 10 years since Mortimer Apparel was born in a single car garage in Wagga. We're extremely proud of notching up a decade. 20.01.2022 Yesterday we received a message from Rachael, a returning client that read - "Just sent you an email regarding ordering staff uniforms. Glad to be working with you again." We absolutely love new clients, but it's not lost on us the importance returning clients like Rachael play in supporting Mortimer Apparel. 19.01.2022 To celebrate our 10th birthday we'll be doing a TBT each month to highlight a year in the life of Mortimer Apparel. We figure there's no better way to kick things off than year one, 2011. After a few months getting things off the ground, Ian's dad Chris transformed the single car garage into an office. ... What we lacked in furnishings and wall hangings we covered with new business enthusiasm. We were fortunate to have clients and friends put their faith in us in the early days placing whatever orders they could. Sue Egan was one of those people. Sue trusted us with an order for Group XI JRL, providing much needed turnover to get us through the first few months. Something that was so important to us early on that we still talk about to this day.
18.01.2022 There's plenty of cricket apparel in production, but if you're yet to organise your club kit let us know, it's not too late to place your order. We can't help you with the bat or ball but we can guarantee you'll look good out in the middle.

17.01.2022 This weeks 'Meet the Manager' introduces you to Bec Mortimer who heads up the Marketing and Accounts departments and is also Ian's wife....Take it away Bec - What's your employment background, where did you start your career? I started out as a Receptionist at Markson Sparks! an events and PR agency in Surry Hills when I was 19 and worked my way up as a PR Assistant. I then moved to the UK with Ian to work with ISC Sports Clothing. When we returned to Sydney I went back to... work in PR as an Account Manager. Tell us about the formation of Mortimer Apparel and early days? Looking back now the first 3-4 years were a hard slog but at the time we were both 26 and probably had a bit of youthful naivety on our side and thought why not start our own business? Our eldest son Louie was 18months old and I was pregnant with our second son Sam. Ian was working two part-time jobs at the sale yards and as a baggage handler at Qantas as well as setting up the business while I was doing some freelance PR work from the kitchen bench. My parents would pack orders in their garage for us and we would just put one foot in front of the other to keep the business growing and the bills paid. One professional achievement you are particularly proud of? Surviving! I think the statistic is that 60% of small businesses in Australia fold within the first 3 years of start up. To have survived the early days, make our first staff hire in Rouselle who is still with us today, and to now have a team of really skilled people that improve our business daily through the work that they do is something that felt like pie in the sky stuff in the early days. What is something you have learned about small business? A few things - My Dad once said to me that nothing is as good as it seems and nothing is as bad as it seems. When you are in the midst of a really tough week or things go against you (Hey Covid) it’s important to not dwell on the negative but to get on with it and make decisions based on what’s in front of you. I would also say that in the early years of starting a small business work-life balance isn’t achievable. You have to be all in and make a lot of sacrifices to get your business to a position where you’re not required to work around the clock. It is however extremely rewarding when you get to that point. Lastly, celebrate your wins! It’s easy to keep working through to the next task but it’s important to ensure you enjoy the milestones along the way because there is always another challenge around the corner.

11.01.2022 Meet the Manager - Week 2 of ‘Meet the Manager’ introduces you to our Design Coach, Au. Au is the leader of our design team. These guys have a truckload of talent and with Au’s direction continue to create custom designs that our clients absolutely love.....Take it away Au - What is your role at Mortimer Apparel?... Design Coach. Much like a coach for any sports team, the job is to see potential in the members of the team (the design team), train them to fully utilize their skills and unlock the potential, strategize and help execute plays to win points (in this case secure clients through design work). What are 3 things clients can assist your team with when designing their custom apparel? Let us know if you want to make certain parts of the body look smaller or bigger than usual. We can tweak the designs to help highlight the good and hide the unwanted. Team/ company history. We do love getting to know our clients more and highlighting their roots or their story when we can through design. How you want to feel when you wear your custom designed apparel OR how you want others to perceive you when you wear the garments What process do you follow when creating designs for clients? Check for the 3Ds - deliverable (output), deadline, and direction (creative direction) Research - a deeper dive into the client and who they are (mostly searching the web for information that was not communicated on initial briefing) Competitor check - When we have spare time, we look into client competitors and the design landscape of the sport and the area where the team/client is located in. Just to make sure we design something that will have them stand out from the rest. * from those, we should already have key insights and concepts to which the design would be anchored on* Design proper - sketching, actual design proper, mock ups, and presentation Favourite sport/sports team? Personally a big fan of ultimate frisbee. No favourite team (other than the team I play for haha). In contrast to other sports, ultimate has something called Spirit of the Game. It's a mindful practice on and off the pitch where each one is responsible to know the rules and enforce them themselves never at the expense of respect between players, adherence to the rules, and the basic joy of play. Always fair, always respectful. Best part about working at Mortimer Apparel? You learn something new every month (whether you realize it or not). Everyone is good at their own thing. The company is set up in a way where you can experiment and play around with ideas to help the company. With each "trial" everyone else jumps in to helps out regardless if it fails or not. You really do get a sense that you're all on the same team while playing your part in the bigger scheme of things.

07.01.2022 The third installment of ‘Meet the Manager’ introduces you to Rouselle Carpio. Rouselle was our first full-time employee and is now Head of Operations. She is a quiet achiever who has shaped so many of the systems and processes that we use each day. Take it away Rouselle...... What is your role at MA? Head of Operations. I am in charge of overseeing the day to day activities of the business and the whole team in general. I look after the production and make sure that every order is according to expectations and meets our turnaround. Since joining us in 2017 you have worked across all parts of the business. Which role do you enjoy the most and why? Though I’ve enjoyed every role that I had from placing orders to doing a bit of art, I like my current role a lot as it lets me collaborate with the rest of the management team in formulating strategies for development. What has been your biggest learning about the apparel industry? Technology (innovation) is an essential part of running any business and it’s no different for the apparel industry. With all these changes and challenges, the key factor is keeping the quality, durability and comfort of every garment. And the great thing about us at MA is that aside from keeping these factors in mind, we have great designs as well so you’ll be able to get the most out of every garment. What is your favourite MA garment and why? Hybrid Walk Shorts comfy and stylish Ultimate travel destination? Bhutan

04.01.2022 We've welcomed some new people here recently so thought we would kick off the week with 5 fun facts to get you up to speed We do things a little differently - Mortimer Apparel has never been a bricks and mortar business. From day one we felt we would be able to deliver a high level of customer service without having a physical shop front. The main advantage of this is we have been able to pass the savings onto you guys when purchasing your apparel. Mortimer Apparel star...ted as a team of 2 (Ian & Bec Mortimer) in Wagga and has now expanded to an awesome team and partners located in regional and metro NSW, the Philippines and China. Prior to starting MA, Ian worked within the teamwear industry for brands such as Kombat Clothing and ISC Sports. Both Ian and Bec did a stint with ISC in the UK. We’re from sporting families - Between the Mortimer's and Finch’s it’s fair to say we are rugby league through and through but growing up in sporting mad towns like Wagga and Newcastle enabled us to have a go at most sports, which we were lucky to experience. We’re volunteers too - Both families instilled the importance of volunteering for your local clubs. Ian’s Grandfather was on the inaugural committee who started the Wagga Magpies Junior Rugby League club in 1964, which all three of our kids now play for. We are lucky to be a part of a great group of volunteers at the Magpies and know first hand the time and effort that goes into community sport each year.

When looking to order it is good to know that you have options. 5 and 6 panel caps are both popular and as you can see look similar but if you would like to switch it up from a traditional baseball cap the 5 panel fashion cap is the way to go. ... Affordable, unisex and custom made. What are you waiting for? Let us customise a cap for your club/business....Our design team is ready to go!
