25.01.2022 Gosh, I just spoke with someone from the NZ High Commission (NZHC). After seeing the post from them we emailed them an invitation to them to attend one of our information sessions coming up in a few weeks in Sydney. This was so they could have an opportunity to be properly informed and educated about our immigration matters.... __________________ The person I spoke to said it was not their place to provide immigration advice which is completely correct. We did however get into quite a heated discussion about it all! My main issue is this: - If they (NZHC) are wanting to put out posts for New Zealand citizens around immigration matters then that information needs to be accurate. Directing fellow NZ citizens to the Department of Home Affairs website is not helpful for most people. It's like telling a person who needs complex tax advice to go the ATO website when what they actually need is to go to speak to an accountant/tax consultant about their unique set of circumstances. Likewise, they (NZHC) need to be informing New Zealand citizens that immigration laws are incredibly complex and that it is advisable to seek specialist advice because it is the most important aspect of a person's life when migrating in another country! __________________ I also explained we are not government funded but we are happily providing free information sessions around the country so that more fellow NZ citizens have an opportunity to be properly educated and informed and to dispel all the myths and misinformation that is circulated on social media and within our communities. __________________ By the end of the conversation it seems they are going to be either too busy or understaffed to attend an information session that could benefit so many. Disappointing but not surprised.

Unfortunately, I cannot provide advice or costs without a consultation due to the complex nature of migration law and professional liabilities attached to providing advice. ... Please click on our 'Book a Consultation' link if you wish to engage our services and seek specialist advice. All the very best with your immigration journey and we hope to hear from you in the very near future.
21.01.2022 Virtual Ceremonies information Citizenship ceremonies... Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, face-to-face citizenship ceremonies have been placed on hold. To continue to enable conferees to become Australian citizens, the Department is undertaking virtual ceremonies through video link as an alternative to traditional face-to-face ceremonies. These virtual ceremonies will continue to be offered as a temporary replacement to traditional face-to-face ceremonies until the social distancing restrictions necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic ease. These ceremonies will be with the presiding officer and generally a single conferee, or a household group if they reside at the same location. Ceremonies performed via video link include integrity measures, such as confirming identity. The Department is contacting conferees with full details of the process. There is no need to contact the Department or your local council about your ceremony. Face-to-face citizenship ceremonies will re-commence when it is safe to do so. Generally, conferees have 12 months from their notice of approval to attend a ceremony and make the pledge of commitment, however, during the COVID-19 period, citizenship approval will not be cancelled if a conferee cannot attend a ceremony within this 12 month period. For more information, see the Minister’s statement on Australian citizenship processing Email: [email protected] https://minister.homeaffairs.gov.au//statement-on-australi https://covid19.homeaffairs.gov.au/citizenship#a

17.01.2022 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS by the Department of Home Affairs Temporary Visa Holders New Zealand 444 Special Category Visa (SCV)... New Zealanders and Australians have reciprocal arrangements whereby we can each stay and work in each other’s country. There are over 670,000 New Zealand citizens in Australia on a TY444 visa. Am I able to access any support in Australia? If you are a protected SCV New Zealand citizen and meet other eligibility requirements, you will be eligible for all welfare payments, including the Job Seeker and Job Keeper payments. If you are not a protected SCV New Zealand citizen and you hold a TY444 visa, you will still be eligible for the Job Keeper payments through your employer. What is a protected New Zealand citizen? A person is a protected SCV New Zealand citizen holder if they fall within one of the following groups: in Australia on 26 February 2001 in Australia for 12 months in the 2 years immediately before this date assessed as a protected SCV by Services Australia holder before 26 February 2004. More information and advice on protected SCV holders can be found at the Services Australia website. https://covid19.homeaffairs.gov.au/frequently-asked-questio

15.01.2022 The Australian Taxation Office is allowing New Zealanders with KiwiSaver accounts to access the Early Release of Superannuation scheme through a loophole. ... In an update to its Design and Implementation document, the ATO said those with a KiwiSaver account are able to access the ERS scheme if they transfer their funds to an Australian super fund. "New Zealand KiwiSaver accounts are not eligible. However, KiwiSaver amounts transferred to an Australian super fund are eligible to be withdrawn," the ATO said. Previously, the ATO had not allowed those with a KiwiSaver account to gain access to the scheme. https://www.financialstandard.com.au//ato-allows-ers-acces
13.01.2022 Right before the NZ Rugby World Cup about 9 years ago I sat directly opposite from the then NZ High Commissioner in Adelaide Parliament House for lunch that myself and a teacher colleague had attended. The area of immigration for NZ citizens was a burning issue for me and now was my opportunity to ask the our NZ high Commissioner about it in person! Conversation went something like this...... Me: I’ve been trying to work out how to get Australian citizenship and it seems we NZ citizens can’t get it. Commissioner: Oh we get complaints all the time, New Zealanders just need to pay the money and stop complaining. I was shocked at his response and the callousness of how he spoke about it. Me: I’m skilled and can pay the money but I still can’t get it from what I can see? Commissioner: Changed the subject and that was the end of that conversation. Like a true politician he shut the conversation down and was not interested. I couldn’t believe it. Sad to say, I see the NZ High Commission put this post up yesterday. I do hate to criticise but much of the content that is displayed in this flowchart is inaccurate and quite misleading. I guess what makes it worse is the NZHC are a branch of our NZ government, therefore their information would and should be taken as credible by the masses who are none the wiser. But sadly it isn’t I contemplated saying nothing because sometimes it’s better to say nothing, but then what does that achieve? Particularly in this space where we are trying to undo misinformation and inform and educate others better. We understand first hand the struggle because we are NZ citizens and like everyone else, we want to help support and protect our families. So I don’t understand why the NZHC would put out information that is flawed? That only adds to the problems we are facing already. Please be aware, there are chunks of information in this table that are incorrect and it should definitely NOT be used as a tool to assess anyone’s immigration status. Migration and Citizenship law for NZ citizens is far more complex than this. - After studying this area for more than 8 years I have come to realise, that before anyone can attempt to explain the basics, they must first understand all the complex layers of the migration and citizenship legislation. A reminder: We are running free 3 hr focused information sessions in Sydney and Brisbane in May and June. These sessions are designed specifically to help properly educate fellow NZ citizens and gain an insight into understanding some of the key complex layers that trip us up all the time. We will send an invite to the NZHC also and hope someone attends so they may provide feedback to the NZHC. https://www.morungamigration.com.au/informationsessions
12.01.2022 NEW ZEALANDER'S URGED TO BECOME AUSTRALIAN CITIZENS New Zealand nationals in Australia have not been forgotten. The "Jobkeeper" subsidy announced yesterday, a $...130 billion dollar fund, applies to full-time, part time and casual workers who have been with a business for more than 12 months, and includes New Zealand nationals. The subsidy will pay A$1500 a fortnight to employers to keep employees "on the books". New Zealand migration agent, @Erina Morunga, said it was good news, and it did not matter when New Zealanders had come to live in Australia as long as they had a 12 month track record with an employer. Mrs Morunga said it was important that people understood what their immigration status was, and it was quite complex. Ms Morunga also urges people to rely on government websites for their information, not social media. ‘A lot of people that have been living here particularly for many many years call themselves permanent residents. And I mean the logical, it’s a logical explanation and description because when you live somewhere permanently, you consider yourself a permanent resident. There is a legal definition behind ‘permanent resident’ and that legal definition that comes from migration law and that can really impact how we move forward’. Only Australian citizens and permanent residents can apply for Centrelink. Even New Zealanders who arrived before 2001 could still be temporary residents if they had not applied for Australian citizenship. The recent announcement indicated to Ms Morunga that there was a now also a change to the stand-down period of 4 years during which new permanent residents cannot access Centrelink assistance. She said as of 25 March, the government removed that stand down period because of the Coronavirus outbreak. LISTEN HERE: https://soundcloud.com//erina-morunga-from-morunga-migrati

08.01.2022 Inductions have started this week as we slowly expand our team. We’ve been trying to slow things down a little so we have time to train new staff to help manage... the workload. Meet Tania (Tanz) (in the pic) who is also my baby sister. Tanz has been living in Australia for over 12 years and has moved from WA, Kalgoorlie/Kambalda WA to Mackay QLD and recently to Naracoorte SA. She spent over 12 years in the mining industry and now she’s ready to apply herself to studying and training to one day become a registered migration agent too. She has always loved the work we do and we are super happy to have her join our team. Her years of experience and knowledge in the mining industry and how immigration affects a large portion of our NZ community has always been a driving factor for her to one day make the switch from mining into immigration. Today was day two of her induction and instead of wearing office attire, she decided to rock up in her high viz gear. She wanted to make a point and to remind us that this is what her drive is, to one day visit the mining industries to take the message and teachings about how our NZ people can secure their immigration status so watch this space To see Tanz’s story of her immigration journey: https://www.morungamigration.com.au/blog

04.01.2022 Still fuming about the NZ High Commission. Not only have they not taken it down and get it corrected, it’s getting shared amongst our community! "We know it’s n...ot always obvious, so please take a look at this handy guide we’ve developed to point you in the right direction." That is an understatement in and of itself. It's very disappointing to see this chart has not been taken down after speaking with a representative yesterday about the faults and flaws with this information. The chart and post is simply inaccurate and misleading. As a Registered Migration Agent who specialises in New Zealand citizens living in Australia, it is disappointing to see the New Zealand High Commission publishing such information, further adding to the misunderstandings and confusion that our citizens face already. The area of migration law that affects New Zealand citizens is highly complex and to publish any material purporting to assist people is irresponsible. Many New Zealand citizens only have one chance to get it right but the way this is presented is it's giving the illusion that it's not that difficult to work out. You should be encouraging people to seek expert advice, not pushing them to an already convoluted website such as the Department of Home Affairs. Any material that is to be published on behalf of our New Zealand government should first be checked for accuracy by an immigration specialist who is trained in Migration Law and Practice. Taking guidance from the Department of Home Affairs does not constitute specialist advice as most employees of the Department of Home Affairs are not trained specialists, rather they are administrators only. This needs to be taken down, and redone with expert guidance before publishing and you need to send staff along to have training because no doubt you will be fielding hundreds if not thousand of calls from NZ citizens asking for advice.
