23.01.2022 Healing Hearts One Headstone at a Time 2 : Headstone Laying Ceremony Wilcannia 26/07/2019

22.01.2022 We Will Find a Way! Today I am experimenting with firing some ceramic decals in my gas kiln. The challenge is for me to increase temperature at a slow enough rate that the tiles (glazed wall tiles) do not crack and to attain an even temperature throughout when having reached the maturation temp. of 800C aprox. at which point the ceramic decal will have fused with the glaze of the tile creating a decorated tile. I am using my own artwork for the decals which were made up by a ...decal manufacturer. The tiles I am using are 20x20cm. Should this work well I will have found another medium for my art and more importantly I may have found a means other than using the Wilcannia Central Schools electric kiln for the firing of the plaques for our Healing Hearts One Headstone at a Time program. Our collaboration with the Wilcannia School has allowed for our success to date and into the future. Being able to fire on site and in our own time will be an added option. We want to purchase our own electric kiln as these are most suitable for our program and projects we want to do in the future but costs are prohibitive (around$15K). If you'd like to see what Healing Hearts One Headstone at a Time is all about then check out our FB page BAARKA THARTU KARNU WILCANNIA Cheers. See more

12.01.2022 Shaping/cutting the headstone blocks before tiling has been a good workout for this old fella.

05.01.2022 Hello everyone! We'll be heading down to Kempsey tomorrow to begin our Healing Hearts One Headstone at a Time 'Train The Trainer Workshop' Monica and I are feeling excited to be sharing this amazing healing program with the mob over there.

05.01.2022 Some new faces and the return of some friends from last years Healing Hearts One Headstone at a Time program....off to a great start!

02.01.2022 Last day of this Healing Hearts program. We start up again in August.

01.01.2022 'Healing Hearts One Headstone At A Time' is a Wilcannia community service program in which residents make a mosaic headstone for a loved one. - Sealing hebel blocks and cutting tiles was two of the jobs everyone enthusiastically got stuck into in the first couple of days of the program.

01.01.2022 A lot of hard work and patients goes into making a mosaic headstone.

01.01.2022 In February this year Monica and I went to Kempsey to do a 5 Day Mosaic Headstone Training with some Dunghutti mob because they wanted to learn so they could do Healing Hearts Program for their mob. We had planned to return in March with their plaques to finalise the training. Then came COVID 19! Not only could we not return then we also had to cancel our Healing Hearts One Headstone At A Time program back home here in Wilcannia that was planned to begin in late March. The op...ortunity came however to head to Kempsey with plaques this last week and complete the process. It was somewhat serendipitous (a happy occurance) that some Dunghutti mob from different organisations doing work around grief and loss came to where we were finishing the headstones. After seeing what was going on and watching a video and discussion, it looks like the Dunghutti chapter of Healing Hearts One Headstone At A Time will be carrying on their healing program pretty soon. We hope to start another program in Wilcannia soon. It will be different this time around, with a much smaller group and priority to those who haven't made a headstone yet. When COVID 19 is no longer a major concern and restriction ease, and Monica is once again able to join me in facillitating the program things will return to something like we have had and planned for the future. We will share soon something of what we've been doing in Wilcannia over past couple of months. In the meantime have a look at some of what the Dunghutti mob in Kempsey have done and enjoy and be happy for their acievements as we are. Grief and loss is not unique to our community and whatever can assist in healing and which is unifying and empowering individuals, families and communities belongs to us all and needs to be shared with all. We honour and give respect to the Dunghutti mob for what they have done and will carry forward in their ways. Love and Respect all Monica and Kevin Paaka Thartu Karnu Mosaic Headstones. See more
