11.01.2022 Long Walk Home fundraiser day 1. It wasn’t wet when we set out, but by the time we reached Woolwich Pier for the start of the walk to Boronia Park it was peltin...g down! This walk is the southern most stretch of the Great North Walk and starts in the city with a ferry ride to Woolwich Pier. After walking up the hill to Woolwich Lookout which is the perfect viewing platform for Sydney’s oldest dry dock built in 1901, we arrived at Kelly’s Bush. Now owned by Hunter’s Hill Council this was the site of the first Sydney green bans. A delightful short walk through well maintained Harbourside bush it ends at some of the luxury houses of Hunter’s Hill. There’s quite a long stretch around the houses, a short hike down to the harbour foreshore next to Hunter’s Hill high school, followed by the shops, a passage under Fig Tree Bridge (no place to shelter if you were homeless) and more lovely streets until you reach Ryde Road. We caught the bus back to North Sydney, but if you were a dedicated Great North Walker, you could go the next stretch to North Ryde - but not in this weather. We covered 8.2kms from door to door. 03.01.2022 Long Walk Home last leg! Today we walked from Roseville to Macquarie Park through the Lane Cove Park and along the Great North Walk. We were joined by our frien...d Melody - last week we joined her on part of her 7 Bridges Walk for the Council Council of NSW. Rated a ‘hard track’ because there are plenty of boulders to clamber over it is mostly dry forest - though today there was plenty of water!! We passed through caves that were supposedly homes during the Great Depression and scrambled up slopes. We spotted a red capped robin (we think), were watched by a wallaby as it snacked, encountered many water dragons and a beautiful patch of flannel flowers (actinotus major).Steamy, hot and occasionally wet - we avoided the storms that rained down elsewhere in Sydney. 11km and 18,390 steps later we have covered the 28 kms we undertook for this fundraiser.
