24.01.2022 Looks like the Summer weather is going to stay. Wet Winter and warm Spring mean there is plenty of insects around and that boosts the number of spiders. I found this one feeding on a fat fly in my garden. More insects is good news and bad news; they will feed more birds, frogs and microbats but also munch on my veggies. This is the time for a detailed check of all plants for signs of caterpillars, leaf-eating beetles and aphids! #gardenecology #gardenecosystem #summeriscoming #insects #insectsinthegarden #aphids #caterpillars #pumpkinbeetle #leafeatingbeetles #28spotladybird #pestcontrol #predatoryinsects #spiders #microbats #smallbirds #frogs #spidersofinstagram

24.01.2022 It is a #wildpollinatorcount this week! Do you see the tiny parasitoid wasp on a broad bean leaf (right side), slowly approaching the stem covered with aphids? She needs to avoid ants guarding them, but once comes close enough, she will lay eggs in aphids' bodies. The larvae will hatch inside and emerge as young wasps from mummified aphid remains. I allow aphids to feed on spent broad bean and brassica plants to increase the population of predatory and parasitoid insects, they provide great biological pest control services all around the garden! #pollinators #beneficialinsects #wasps #parasitoidwasps #insects #notallinsectsarepests #waspsarepollinatorstoo #insectsinthegarden #pollination #predatoryinsects #aphids #biologicalpestcontrol

22.01.2022 Tomorrow is the last day of the Spring Wild Pollinator Count . I was told that the name of this tiny, emerald moth (finger for scale!) is Comostola laesaria, couldn't they come up with something nicer? #wildpollinatorcount #insectsinthegarden #pollination #pollinators #pollinatinginsects #moth #moths #mothsofinstagram #tinymoth #greenmoth

17.01.2022 I made two jars of nourishing and anti-inflammatory cream from the remains of olive oil in which I macerated dried calendula and chamomile flowers. No additional fragrances were added so it smells like its components. Made without preservatives, the cream is now safely stored in the fridge. #homemade #handmade #cream #creammaking #handmadecream #herbalcream #organic #oliveoil #camomile #calendula #medicinalherbs #apothecarygarden #naturalskincare #coldcream #oldrecipe #galensrecipe

15.01.2022 Eating my garden: an egg and potato omelette with turmeric and chives, with a side of cooked broad beans. After a lunch like this I can fork hundreds of kilograms of hot compost! #foodisfree #localfood #foodsecurity #foodsovereignity #eatyourgarden #gardengrown #lunch #gardenharvest #backyardharvest #homegrownfood #backyardeggs #potatoes #dutchcreampotatoes #chives #turmeric #broadbeans #homesteading #permaculture.

09.01.2022 Raspberries picked on a very hot day, it was 35 degrees in shade here! Thankfully, a cool change is coming. It is a good season for berries in Sydney. After warm and rainy Winter/ early Spring the raspberry canes grew big and lush, full of flowers and fruit. Blueberries are doing well, too! #berryfruit #berries #berryseason #raspberries #willametteraspberries #homegrown #springfruit #gardencrop #productivegarden #productivebackyard #ediblegarden #foodgarden #gardenproduce #urbanfarming #permaculturegarden

08.01.2022 There are several species of plants commonly known as Green Grass Jelly plant, because they are used to make a green jelly dessert. The plant I have (Cyclea barbata), a climber with smallish leaves, is an edible and medicinal plant from Indonesia (where it is known as Cincau hijau). To make the jelly chopped leaves are immersed in water, then the liquid is strained into bowls where it sets into green jelly (faster if you put them in a fridge). Fruit juices can be used instead... of water. Consume chilled. The plant has more to it than just being edible. The long flexible stems are good for basketry or as plant ties. In traditional medicine Cincau hijau is a treatment for stomach pain and high blood pressure. #greengrassjelly #greengrasjellyplant #cycleabarbata #cincauhijau #greenjelly #recipe #vine #climbingplant #basketry #medicinalplant

07.01.2022 Beautiful, sky blue flowers of Common chicory appeared recently in my garden. This plant is mostly known as an edible green, with leaves adding bitters to salads, edible flowers and the root roasted to make coffee substitute. It is also a mild medicinal herb, with choleretic and anti-inflammatory properties. It regulates metabolism, stimulates the secretion of gastric juice and improves the absorption of food by stimulating digestive processes. Like dandelion (to which it is ...closely related), chicory has a slight diuretic effect. #growyourownmedicine #chicory #commonchicory #cichoriumintybus #edible #leaves #edibleflowers #saladbitters #root #roastedroot #roastedchicory #

06.01.2022 It's going to be a busy week, turning the hot compost heap everyday. I did it today after the workshop I have run on exactly this topic! But the end result is worth it; fast-fermented compost, full of nutrients for the garden soil. To fill in the first, largest compost bay I used about 140 litres of chookhouse bedding (chicken droppings mixed with coffee chaff), 80 rabbit litter trays (newspapers and straw mixed with rabbit urine and manure) and fresh green clippings from a 5... m long box hedge. After all materials were mixed and watered they measured over 1.2 cubic metres. Two days later the volume was down to less than 1 cubic metre and the temperature inside has reached 58 degrees which is enough to cause burns! The science of composting is fascinating and the practical work is good for muscle-building. What's not to love about composting? #compost #composting #hotcompost #hotcompostingprocess #turningcompost #hardyakka #foodforthesoil #fertiliser #soilfertility #livingsoils #compostisalive #gardenworkout
