25.01.2022 Families as First Teachers (FaFT) is a key Territory Labor Government early childhood program, designed to help boost early learning and literacy to improve kids readiness for day one of school. Our government has more than doubled the number of FaFT sites to 57 - the vast majority in remote communities. It was lovely to drop into the busy Ludmilla Primary School FaFT this week with Evelyn, to chat to some of the parents and play with some of the kids.
24.01.2022 Casuarina Swimming Club are fundraising today with the good ol’ Bunnings snag, so if you’re there today be sure to get one!
24.01.2022 Our government is funding local organisations to deliver nearly 300 activities and events right across the Territory, as part of our October school holiday program. There's lots to choose from: sports to arts and crafts, mystery tours, big breakfasts and movie nights, to keep kids entertained. To see the calendar of events for your area, go to youth.nt.gov.au/calendar
21.01.2022 The re-development of the Casuarina Pool is important to many locals. The City of Darwin will be considering the Consultation Report (https://www.darwin.nt.gov.au//council-comm/agendas-minutes) at tomorrow’s meeting and community members are invited to attend from 5.30pm.
20.01.2022 The consultation for the redevelopment of the Casuarina Pool is now open. Read more about the plans and have your say here: https://engage.darwin.nt.gov.au/casuarina-pool
20.01.2022 There are wonderful educators and school staff right across the Territory. Today I caught up with Jo, Carol and the wonderful students at Titjikala School after also visiting Ltyentye Apurte Catholic School in Santa Teresa. Both Jo and Carol have been involved with the school for many years - even teaching some of the current student’s parents! ... Thank you for welcoming me.
19.01.2022 So pleased to see this project come to fruition. Our investment in oval lights and improvements to sporting facilities across the Territory is about connected and healthy communities.
16.01.2022 Who’s excited for the school holidays? It was lovely to drop in to Ludmilla Primary School this morning for their final Term 3 assembly and to present a couple of student awards. I also had a tour of the school’s recent $7.4 million upgrade with Principal Carol, to see all the fantastic new classrooms.... Grade 5/6 were particularly taken with baby Evelyn! I hope everyone has a safe and happy two week school holiday break and we’ll see you back next term.
16.01.2022 Clontarf Foundation does some incredible work across Australia, but I'm particularly proud of what they do here in the Territory. Was great to pop into one of my local Clontarf teams and see how the boys have progressed over the year. Heard some pretty awesome stories of learning and personal growth today! Thanks Year 9 students Budi and Jason for the tour.
15.01.2022 I have been travelling around the Territory and seeing first hand the infrastructure needs of our schools. That's why the NT Government's most recent budget included $93.7 million for infrastructure upgrades to schools across the NT. For schools like Tennant Creek High School, this means better buildings, better programs and better outcomes for their kids. From the The NT News
15.01.2022 An important update on the Melbourne hot spot (removed today!) and the new check in system
14.01.2022 To graduate in any year is a fantastic accomplishment, but to graduate in the middle of a global pandemic is all the more impressive. Last night we celebrated the graduating class of 2020 from Jabiru Area School, OLSH Thamarrurr Catholic College, Tiwi College and Xavier Catholic College Wurrumiyanga at the Remote Schools Graduation in Darwin. I love seeing different school sectors coming together to celebrate our students because that's why we are all here, for the kids. These students, with the help of some fantastic teachers, families and communities, have managed the difficult task of completing their schooling remotely while also navigating the challenges of learning during COVID. They are amazing and deserve all of our congratulations.
12.01.2022 I think we can all agree 2020 has been a challenging year. Still, tonight’s Henbury School Year 12 Graduation Formal has been one of the highlights for me! Tonight is the culmination of years of hard work from students, their families and the passionate Henbury teachers. Seeing such confident and happy students enjoying their graduation and formal tonight was an inspiring thing. They showed off some great dance moves too!
12.01.2022 For those students and their families living in remote and isolated parts of the Territory, getting an education is not easy or straightforward. It requires enormous sacrifices and commitment, which don't always get the recognition they deserve. Given today is the inaugural Geographically Isolated Distance Education Day, let's take a moment to acknowledge the role that working parents and instructors play educating students in remote parts of the NT. Their efforts to educate their children are herculean. I look forward to continuing to work with ICPA Aust - Isolated Children's Parents' Association and ICPA NT to help make their jobs easier
11.01.2022 Gunamidirra garawa birditj | when the tides turn The NT Writers Festival has begun with a wonderful, thought provoking program for lovers of story telling and language You can see the program and get involved here: https://www.ntwriters.com.au/festival/2020program/... NT Writers' Centre

10.01.2022 The NT says NO MORE to family violence! This is the message sent loud and clear at the No More Violence Breakfast this morning. Today is International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and it was great to hear from Minister Kate Worden MLA: Member for Sanderson, Charlie King OAM from the NO MORE AU campaign, Darwin businesswoman Fatima Tam, Commissioner Jamie Chalker APM and Casey Bruton from Business and Professional Women Darwin about the work we all need to continue to do to end family violence in the NT.
08.01.2022 Congratulations and well done Dripstone students, Mr Cilento and staff on this mammoth effort
07.01.2022 It's important to recognise the achievements and efforts of our talented students. Tonight we did this at Dripstone Middle School's end-of-year Stars Foundation Awards & Graduation Night. These nights are special events and a wonderful celebration of the significant efforts of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young women in the STARS program. The program focuses on developing leadership skills, positive attitudes, assisting students to complete school and secure employment. Well done to Principal Robyn Thorpe, the teachers, families and all 2020 STARS program participants. Keep reaching for the Stars
07.01.2022 The Bangladeshi Student Association - Charles Darwin University has provided connection and support for students through good and challenging times. Each year they do an incredible job organising the Bangladesh Festival - delicious food, wonderful performances and a celebration of achievement.
07.01.2022 It’s World AIDS Day Today we wear a red ribbon to show our support for people living with HIV and commemorate those who have died of AIDS-related conditions or other conditions associated with HIV. This year's theme is 'Now More Than Ever'. Over the past 20 years, we have made fantastic progress reducing rates of HIV transmission. However, for far too many Australians and Territorians, the reality of an HIV diagnosis is still all too real. The rate of HIV diagnosis in First Nations people is double that of our Australian-born non-Indigenous population. We must focus our efforts to bring that rate down to zero.
06.01.2022 Today is Police Remembrance Day, and we honour those lost in the line of duty, and reflect on their contribution to our community. Thank you to the Territory Police who work so hard to keep us safe.
06.01.2022 2020 has been a challenging year to be a student. Great to celebrate the fantastic achievement of the graduating seniors from St. John's Catholic College, Darwin, Australia. To do what these students have done, in a year like the one we had, is nothing short of amazing. A special mention to boarding students who were required to travel and learn from home during the initial impact of COVID-19. Congratulations to students, and the teachers & families who have supported their journey. I wish you the best of luck with everything that your futures hold.
04.01.2022 The Youth Outreach and Engagement Officer team now have a space in Casuarina. Working with young people at risk they do a fantastic job.
02.01.2022 Many Casuarina families cycle to work, school and for fun and fitness, and want to see better networks to support it. Have your say
01.01.2022 I'm pleased to announce that 15 new classrooms will roll out to NT schools, as part of our $11.4 million COVID-19 education stimulus program. Remote communities will receive 10 of the classrooms, including three at Alekarenge to replace ageing infrastructure, while five will go to urban schools for use by Students With Additional Needs. These new buildings have everything modern classrooms demand to support learning, from quality acoustics, to state-of-the-art IT connectivity and, importantly for Territory schools, air-conditioning.
