25.01.2022 Its that time of the week again - OzHarvest Cairns has delivered a bountiful supply of fresh produce including; meat, dairy, fruit and vegetables. We also have papayas and chillis from the Community Garden and bread from Woolworths Mossman. We are open from 8.30am on Wednesday. So if you are struggling or need a bit extra food to help feed your family please come and see us. Thank you to our volunteers who pick up and deliver the bread each day and to Jason for his help in setting up our food display. Please bring your own bags.

25.01.2022 There was a lot happening down at the Community Centre today, Volunteers Peta and Marcia packed up 30 Christmas Hampers for distribution - thank you so much ladies you did a fabulous job and we appreciate your time. Also today we celebrated Christmas and staff prepared the Wednesday lunch for community, volunteers and participants of our programmes. 19.01.2022 The Community Garden Project is in full swing and participants have been learning about composting, biodiversity in the garden and planting bee attracting plants. One of the participants made a great tasting chutney with the Guinea bean (Lagenaria siceraria), which is actually from Africa and is more like a squash or gourd. This plant has a beautiful white flower and can be seen growing along the fence line near the Cottage. The gourd has attracted much interest from visit...ors and staff over the past few months. During the last 4 weeks up to 102 kg of food has been harvested from the Community Garden. All the food goes towards our emergency relief programme. 18.01.2022 A successful first `Master Class Cooking Demonstration' as part of the Community Resilience Garden Programme at Mossman Support Services. Thank you to Shelly Richards of Mossman Elders Justice Group and to the 12 participants. Shelly created tomatoe and chilli jam using some of the produce from the Community Garden and also showcased produce grown in her garden and how versatile the produce is in making chutneys and jams. This programme is all about horticultural skills, fo...od production, preservation all within the context of sustainability and biodiversity. We will explore the use of some of the tropical spinaches and other crops that grow abundantly in our climate as well as taking a fresh look at old standards such as papayas preparing them in new and surprising ways. This year will be a little different, we will provide takeaway meals AND have limited seating for those who would like to stay and enjoy company and good food in a relaxed atmosphere. 15.01.2022 Mossman Community Centre would like to thank Avery Plumbe and her amazing assistant Peta Campbell for hosting the very interesting and entertaining pickling Masterclass; which is part of the Community Resilience Garden Program. Avery shared her love of experimentation, trial and error and exploration of exciting new flavours. We got to try Watermelon Rind Pickle, Sweet Cauliflower Mustard Pickle, SUPER YUMMY Orange Rind Cake (dairy and gluten free!) and her spicy roasted pump...kin seeds. Avery also explained how to make her dried Orange Peel and Herb Salt Rub, which would make a beautiful and festive holiday present. An excellent tutorial and we are very lucky to have such a skilled cook in our community! Thank you ladies! 12.01.2022 A great few hours with David and Ruben, Chef's from the High Tide Restaurant at the Peninsula Hotel Port Douglas. Today's `Master Class' demonstration used seven different types of spinach that are all growing in the Mossman Community Garden. Participants of the `Community Resilient Garden Project' enjoyed the interactive cooking demonstration and tips and insights David and Ruben shared with the group. Everyone got to sample the Kibbeh vegetable pie and Spatzele which were tasty and nutritious. Thank you to David and Ruben for donating your time to our Community Resilience Garden Project. 12.01.2022 Mossman Support Services participated in the Biodynamics FNQ, Mossman Botanic Garden successful Open Gardens in the Douglas Shire Council during October 3 - 5, 2020. Food producing gardens were highlighted in the Shire including the Community Centre garden which has produced 262 kilos since mid July that has been distributed to our community. Four participants from the Community Resilience Garden Programme opened their gardens to the public out of the 13 gardens which were on display. `The Community Resilience Garden Programme is jointly funded under the Commonwealth/State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements 2018'. 09.01.2022 The third `Master Cooking Class' was held yesterday and the aromas coming from the Hub Kitchen were amazing. The food was prepared by Sao and Tik who had participated in the Community Resilience Garden programme, with assistance from Paul. Sao and Tik prepared two tropical varieties of stir fried spinach, deep fried papaya, green papaya salad and sago with corn and taro. The group were introduced to cooking methods of Thailand that we can apply to our tropical produce here in Far North Queensland. 04.01.2022 The `Muruku Art Group' meet at the Community Centre on Mondays from 10am - 12.00noon and today they were preparing their jewellery display and art pieces for our `Open Day' at Mossman Support Services to be held on Thursday 15th October 2020 between 10am - 2pm. There will be an opportunity to purchase the `Early Readers in Yalanji' - a set of 6 books which are beautifully illustrated and a delight to read, jewellery/key tags with bernie beans and an opportunity to participat...e in some artwork. Also last week participants of the Community Resilience Garden Programme cooked and shared their favorite Thai dishes with the group. Tasty Thai food was on the menu for lunch thanks to Sao and Tik who presented some really lovely dishes incorporating locally grown herbs/vegetables. Also thanks to Jenny for creating the best wholesome fruit salad with a difference - aloe vera, shredded coconut, strawberry puree and papaya. 04.01.2022 We would like to thank the wonderful team at Jabalbina Yalanji Aboriginal Corporation and acknowledge their time in delivering two Cultural Awareness Workshops for the Mossman Support Services team of Board Members, Staff and Volunteers. The Workshops were engaging and insightful and were received well by the 28 participants.
