25.01.2022 Moss Wood Semillon is part of Moss Wood's original plantings and has been made at Moss Wood for over 40 years. Predictions that Margaret River’s climate would be suitable for the Bordeaux varieties have proven correct and Cabernet Sauvignon has been the poster child, but Semillon has done just as well. Semillon is lovely as a fresh young wine with primary fruit aromas of figs and granny smith apple, and a rich and rounded texture. It is not always well known for being an age-...worthy variety but Moss Wood Semillon can live for up to 30 years. As it ages, it develops beautiful honey and toasty characters that deliver this exceptionally complex wine. Semillon is close to our hearts. It grows like a weed, ripens reliably, and produces wines that are lively and vibrant in their youth but cellar for decades a true, unsung hero. Video by @benjamindelfs

25.01.2022 Margaret River has developed a tremendous reputation for its Chardonnay wines and yet the variety’s contribution to the total vineyard area in our region doesn’t really reflect this. Consumers may also notice the relative scarcity of Margaret River Chardonnays on retail shelves and restaurant wine lists. The reasons for this were front and centre for the 2019 vintage. While we have generally very good conditions for grape growing, our maritime climate can be a blessing and a ...curse. We enjoy a wet but mild winter which means the temperatures do not drop low enough to keep the early varieties, and Chardonnay in particular, in a long dormancy. Those sensitive new shoots are at risk of being damaged by strong winds, hail and even frost. Add to this the variety’s relative softness, which makes viticulturists joke that it’s the one which will catch a cold, and it becomes clear that the Margaret River and Chardonnay do not always get along. To put it bluntly, in 2019 we saw all the things that can go wrong. Frost is not an especially common event here but Moss Wood’s topography does make us somewhat frost prone. Cold air can collect in our little valley and will sit over two of the Chardonnay blocks and on very cold nights we get frosts. In 2018, on 15th September, we had serious frost and two of our Chardonnay blocks copped a nasty hit. Losses in both were 90% and Clare and Keith became media personalities for a week or so after it was picked up by the press. After this tale of woe, readers will be amused to know the season was absolutely brilliant for ripening conditions and flavour development. We could not have been happier with how it all tasted. 23.01.2022 Reviews for the 2018 Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon keep coming in! Sam Kim - @wineorbit 100/100 points. ... Can a cabernet be any finer, better structured and more engaging? This gloriously composed wine shows crème de cassis, spicy oak, subtle cigar, game and rich floral aromas on the nose, leading to an immensely concentrated palate offering exceptional depth and drive. Offering waves of refined texture and delicious flavours, classically structured by loads of fine tannins, finishing seductively long and gratifying. At its best: 2028 to 2058. The wine is currently available to Moss Wood members. Follow the link to join membership: https://www.mosswood.com.au/member/

21.01.2022 Moss Wood and Ribbon Vale are proudly and unarguably Wilyabrup vineyards. The Wilyabrup valley pioneered and spearheaded Margaret River to the premier wine region it is today. Situated at its Northern end, it has proven to be outstanding for many varieties and especially Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Wilyabrup, with its highly beneficial creek drainage system, distinct soils of gravelly loam over clay, varying topography and reliable rainfall, provides unique and distinct vineyard sites.

A great vintage maximised by the thoughtful vinification." 99 points #halliday2021... Moss Wood 2018 Chardonnay "Bright, light straw-green; rich and layered stone fruit (white and yellow peach), fig and balanced by citrussy acidity. 12.01.2022 "It’s with great pleasure that I had the opportunity to participate in Moss Wood’s 2020 harvest which has left me with amazing memories. 09.01.2022 It is not news that the Margaret River Wine Region is internationally recognised as a premium producer of Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay and Moss Wood is well known for its cabernet. However, our Pinot Noir often flies under the radar, despite the fact we have been making Moss Wood Pinot Noir for as long as Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon and Moss Wood Chardonnay. In Margaret River, Pinot Noir never has been widely planted. The initial success of Cabernet Sauvignon, meant Pin...ot Noir was not an attractive choice for many growers, especially given the specialised inputs required in vineyard and winery. Pinot Noir is sensitive to vineyard techniques, requiring good fruit exposure and lower yields to achieve quality results. In the winery it is also fussy and needs to be fermented and aged in the correct way. At Moss Wood we have always believed in the quality of our wine and we can now point to vintages that have aged beautifully for more than 35 years. Moss Wood 2018 Pinot Noir is the first of our red wine releases from this vintage and we have high hopes for all and believe they will rival any of the great years from the past. Having had such a late, cool season in 2017, it was good to enjoy conditions closer to our long-term average for the 2018. Looking back at them now, things seem almost boring by comparison but that’s OK because at Moss Wood we would take boring over challenging every year, if we had the choice. As a result, this vintage is right amongst our best. Read more: https://www.mosswood.com.au/moss-wood-newsletter-early-spr/

09.01.2022 Australian Merlot, with very few exceptions, is typically of only moderate quality and usually dismissed as soft, generic dry red. We admit to making that very criticism ourselves but once we were exposed to high-quality Merlot and how it is made, a whole new world has opened up. Merlot is the variety the most widely planted in Bordeaux and very highly regarded there. Anyone lucky enough to taste Chateau Petrus or Chateau Cheval Blanc would surely understand why. We hav...e had to focus on the wines of Pomerol and St Emilion, looking in depth at their production techniques as well as the demanding task of tasting as many as we can. Making Merlot has been a challenge but one we have enjoyed far more than initially expected. We are proud of the quality of the Moss Wood Ribbon Vale Merlot. We are comfortable it is a serious wine, capable of bearing comparison with wines of this style from anywhere in the world. See more

08.01.2022 We got the 2021 vintage under way on 1st March, picking the D4 and D5 Pinot Noir clones. It was a good start, albeit somewhat slow. Apart from a 3 week period in late December and early January, our weather has been very mild and temperatures have encouraged consistent ripening but the rate has been on the slow side. The fruit was in excellent condition and we’re delighted with the flavours. All in all, we feel like we’re off to good start. vineyard pic by Frances Andrijich Photographer

08.01.2022 The tale of the 2017/18 growing season is delightfully simple. Essentially, benign conditions prevailed nearly all the way. The high-quality theme for the 2018 vintage shows on the palate of the Moss Wood Ribbon Vale Cabernet Sauvignon, with full body and a concentrated tannin structure playing a co-starring role behind generous and supple blackberry, blueberry and fruit cake flavours, complemented by some tarry, smoky and toasty oak notes on the finish. Very smooth indeed ...and probably the best Ribbon Vale Cabernet Sauvignon we have made. Read more: https://www.mosswood.com.au//moss-wood-ribbon-vale-2018-c/

02.01.2022 The Ribbon Vale Project How Far Have We Come? It’s almost 20 years to the day that we began negotiations for the purchase of Ribbon Vale. Ribbon Vale suited the bill perfectly, sharing many key attributes with Moss Wood similar Wilyabrup soils, cane pruning and of course, it was and remains unirrigated. The purchase was settled on 1st March, 2000 and we set about putting our own stamp on the property. What followed has been a fascinating adventure in grape growing and... winemaking. Looking back over this period then, we spent the first decade improving and analysing how the vineyard performed. As a result, we have spent the second decade seeing a gradual improvement in the quality of the wine style but the job is not yet finished. We are delighted with the overall improvement of the Moss Wood Ribbon Vale Merlot and are comfortable it is a serious wine, capable of bearing comparison with wines of this style from anywhere in the world. The Ribbon Vale Cabernet Sauvignon has always been at a higher quality level but we are keen to see it recognised as one of the finest wines in this style from Margaret River. No doubt customers will have their own views on how the project has gone so far. If it’s OK with everyone else, we’ll give ourselves a pass mark so far.
