25.01.2022 Birth of a Mother Post One (in this series anyway!) Pregnancy I believe our experience in becoming a mother begins well before the baby is born and so I commence this short series with a beautiful woman & mother named @lisapires who is also an amazing photographer @lisapiresphoto ...... I invite you to think back to your first pregnancy, or subsequent pregnancies, if that applies.. What was your focus? Did you find yourself consumed with all the ‘do’s & ‘don’ts’ of pregnancy? At what point in pregnancy did you stop working? Did you prioritise ‘self-care’? What kept you awake at night? Leg cramps, frequent toilet trips? Or was it the awareness that you were embarking on perhaps the most significant Body Morphing and Hormone Shifting you will ever experience? What were your expectations, if any, of Motherhood? Did you give your goals, dreams, morals & values much thought in relation to your Mothering Journey... When did the desire (if it did) to be a Mother first show up in your life? In what ways did you prepare for the day of your Baby’s Birth, and your own mindset in becoming a mother. No judgement, nor wrong & right answers. Sharing experiences helps normalise feelings. As a Mother of 20 years and a Perinatal Professional for much of this time, I am keenly aware of the complexities of mothering and keenly interested in your experiences throughout your Motherhood journey. Being a Mother is a verb. It’s a ‘doing’ word. It’s dynamic and a opportunity for growth and happiness. It changes every single part of our being in a purposeful way.

21.01.2022 BIG BABIES Have you been told you have a ‘big baby’ & you will not be able to birth vaginally? That your baby’s head is too large to fit through the pelvis. This is known, in medical terms, as Cephalopelvic Disproportion (CPD). You may even be told that your baby will get STUCK (what does that do to your confidence?). Hmmm, this intrigues me. ... There is no way that a true CPD can be accurately diagnosed before the cervix is fully dilated and good pushing efforts have been tried in a variety of positions. Yes, there are genuine cases of a CPD, and we are grateful for modern medicine when it is needed. But are we forgetting some of the basics? Baby’s skulls are soft & flexible because the skull bones haven’t fully fused. This means that their head can change shape and the skull bones may even overlap to encourage molding to fit through the birth canal. The positions the birthing woman adopts in labour & birth can dramatically alter her ability to optimise her vaginal opening. Birth is more about our brain & mindset then it is about our uterus. Language is SO important and hearing things like ‘your pelvis is too small’ ‘your baby will get stuck’ ‘you won’t be able to do this’ is very damaging & unfair! Birth is a physiological event, not a medical one. You are not sick, injured, diseased, broken or lacking. You are a woman with innate abilities. The Sphincter Law, but let’s talk about this another day. This is my 4.5kg baby, born in the Birth Centre. Could I have been led to believe that I couldn’t do it? Yes, absolutely!! I had a previous postpartum haemorrhage, 3rd degree tear and I’m not a girl with a ‘large pelvis’. Would I have been against medical intervention if that was necessary? Absolutely, not!! But, I trusted my body on this. I was prepared, both mentally & physically, and I understood the process. Look at him!! Born 2 hours after labour started with Apgar - all 9’s. #lovehimtoomuch Connect with me if you’d like to discuss your birthing needs.

18.01.2022 The moment everyone has been eagerly waiting for has arrived, the birth of your baby!! He, or she, is here!! All that planning.... All that organising. All that preparing. All that nesting. All that dreaming. All that worrying. It’s done! Or is it? As a Specialised Perinatal Health Practitioner, I am interested in your birth story. It’s where we begin. The experience of birthing a baby is an integral part of our Mothering experience, of this there is no doubt. However, I invite you to consider these thoughts - What brought you to become a mother? When did this desire (if it did) first show up in your life? What did you expect Motherhood to be? What part of this is real, and what part of this is lived? How has this experience changed your life? It might be early days, and too fresh to consider these questions. Right now, you may be trying to heal from birth and just getting to know your baby. But when it is time, and it will come, go back to these questions. They are too often overlooked, skimmed over and not given the time, or space, to reflect on. When a mother is asked what she expected from becoming a mother, she will almost always revert to talking about her baby’s birth. It can be odd to imagine herself in a separate context to her AND her baby, almost as if she would need to look at yourself from an outsiders view, and respond in a way that is socially acceptable for a Mother. Ada specialised Perinatal Health Practitioner, I am also interested in the birth of you, dear mother, and that is where we continue. Reach out if you’d like some support with this transitional journey. It takes time, patience, compassion & grace but it’s worth it. Cute drawing by @maggiecoledraws

15.01.2022 Good question! Remember back to when you were an adolescent. These memories may evoke happy thoughts...or may send shivers up your spine. Likely, the reminiscing of these early years in your life will do both. ... Why? Because Adolescence is an awkward time. It’s confusing, scary & destabilising. There are so many ‘firsts’ during Adolescence and so many changes... Hormonal, Biological, Physiological, Structual, Neurological, Emotional, Psychological, Social, Relational, Behavioural. As a society, we recognise the enormous transformation of a girl becoming a woman and we support & provide space for this transition. What about the transition of a woman becoming a mother? Does she not also go through all of the things listed above? Doesn’t it make sense to recognise this transformation, and support and provide for this very significant transition?? Introducing...The Postpartum Doula! Head to my website or get in touch with me to learn more about how I can support and ‘hold’ you during your Postpartum and joyful memories that will last a lifetime.

15.01.2022 THE BIRTH OF A MOTHER The critical transition period which has been missed is MATRESCENCE, the time of mother-becoming. Giving birth does not automatically make a mother out of a woman..the amount of time it takes to become a mother needs study. Dana Raphael, Matrescence, becoming a mother, a new/old rite de passage (1975).... A Newborn Mother needs - Time to heal. Patience to get to know her baby. Space to grow. Support to emotionally connect. Reassurance Encouragement to follow her instincts Practical Help Nourishing Food Presence whilst she feeds her baby LOVE She doesn’t need - Constant flow of non-helpful visitors. To cook, clean or do multiple chores. To be given inconsistent, contradictory advice or expert help that undermines her motherly intuition. Information overload. Passing the baby around like a parcel. Noise, outings, and constant interruptions. She needs peace & joy! @newbornmothers

14.01.2022 Since the birth of humankind, common practice has been for ‘those who birthed before us to pass down their wisdom and experiences to those who are birthing now’. Beautiful traditions that seem so simple, yet endearing, and such an important non-prescriptive intergenerational way for our mothers & grandmothers (biological or adoptive) to organically share their personal stories.. Industrialisation and Colonisation has impacted the Western World into a Nuclear Family model & t...he belief that birth is just about babies... One of the things I love most about my work is being able to support women through their experiences in becoming a mother. To bring back her village and ensure she feels seen, heard & held. As she navigates her own direction in understanding the psychological transition of her own Birth, as a Mother, and she is gently guided through her wisdom and the wisdom of those around her, she learns to appreciate the true value of herself in this role. The role of the Postpartum Doula is more than just making cups of tea and folding the laundry (although those things are important too!). You are valued. Your role is valued. Your mothering is valued. But at the same time, it can be one of the hardest times in your life. Find out why hiring a Postpartum Doula can set up joyful memories, of a period that will last a lifetime..

10.01.2022 Good question! I believe that the food we put into our mouth has a direct relationship on our physical & emotional health, and when we have a baby, foods that have been made with attention and intention become even more necessary. Birth is hard work! We wouldn't expect our body, at any other time, to go through such purposeful bodily changes and endure a mammoth marathon event and not replenish. THE RIGHT FOOD IS THE FOUNDATION FOR POSTP...ARTUM RECOVERY. With love and thought, I have created a Postpartum Meal Service that is designed to restore energy, aid the sensitive digestive needs of the Newborn Mother and her baby have a positive role in recovery of her physical and emotional wounds. These meals come in packages, and stand-alone dishes, and make for a meaningful gift! 09.01.2022 Common ageing issues include decreased appetite, poor nutritional absorption and decline of good gut bacteria. Glutamine, one of the amino acids found in bone broth, can significantly counter the effects listed above. Promoting positive gut bacteria also supports a healthy immune system, the key to longevity. ... Collagen, necessary for many functions in the body, including joint health, skin & eye integrity and vital organ support, is readily available from bone broth. A balanced diet, which includes Bone Broth is always a good idea, at any stage of life, and especially to support the ageing process. Go to the ‘Meals’ option on my website to order your Bone Broth. 08.01.2022 MASSAGE THERAPY #womenshealththerapist Every woman that walks through the door of my clinic space is unique. She carries her own circumstances, her own challenges, her own discomfort, her own story. ... This is why I believe it is very important that I treat her needs as just that - unique. Listening is the first step. Really listening. What is she experiencing? What is going on in her world and how would that be affecting her musculoskeletal system and autonomic nervous system. Explaining the treatment is the second step. Giving her chance to ask questions and making her feel comfortable provides reassurance. Many years of experience as a mother, and a perinatal professional, gives me a deeper level of insight into how to relieve some of the symptoms of common discomforts such as headaches, insomnia, back or pelvic pain, oedema, neck & shoulder pain, shoulder girdle dysfunction, hormonal fluctuations, and emotional burden. Understanding and depth of skill allow me to help her understand the importance of breath, stretches and other lifestyle factors. You are a person to me, not just a client. I care about your health & wellbeing. I use doTerra oils for their therapeutic benefits. Book an appointment today. This remainder of the year is booking up fast. CAN’T get in. No worries! Organise a Gift Voucher for yourself or someone you love. Massage makes for a lovely gift!

07.01.2022 BABY MASSAGE CLASSES The last Baby Massage Workshop of the year and another example of the way these classes bring local Mothers together to feel heard & supported as she grows in confidence to massage her baby, all the while feeling nurtured herself. Did you know that Oxytocin, a very special hormone that creates security, trust, love & attachment, is released not only in the baby, but also in the mother. ... That means that both the giver & the receiver of Baby Massage are being bathed in this ‘feel good’ hormone, creating a beautiful safe bubble between them both. Anyone that attends these classes will tell you that learning Baby Massage is only part of the education. Conversations with Perinatal Professionals invite open discussion to flow. Next classes are in February and I can’t wait to tell you about the amazing guests I have lined up to facilitate understanding and change in the way we talk about Motherhood.
