19.01.2022 What a beautiful baby boy. Only a few days old and he is so alert and awake. Newborn babies eyes can change colour but usually whatever the colour in the first 9 months is the colour they will stay. That's just another exciting part of parenting: the suspense and guessing of what their eyes will be like when they are older.

19.01.2022 Are you a breastfeeding Mum with Flu Symptoms? It Could be Mastitis. Breastfeeding is certainly a learned skill and it takes time to master. With many new Mothers staying at home due to COVID-19 and missing out on face to face advice and guidance regarding breastfeeding, there has been quite an increase in Mastitis in new mothers. Mastitis is quite common and can be easily remedied once diagnosed, but if you don't know what to look for it can s...eem like you have the flu! When my first baby was 3 weeks old I started to feel terribly unwell, I felt sore all over particularly around part of my chest and I had fevers. Reluctantly I went to my local GP, a lovely man who was very experienced. He told me I had the flu and estimated that I would be unwell for at least 7-10 days. As you can imagine I was terribly worried about my baby getting the flu and about myself too. I went home feeling so sick and upset. The next day, I had forgotten but my local maternal health nurse was doing her scheduled first home visit to me. My partner turned her away at the door saying I had the flu but she persevered and asked if she could still come in. He let her and after asking my permission the nurse had a quick check of my chest area. Sure enough, it was red and blotchy on one side and quite painful. I hadn't even noticed! She told me "forget the flu, you have mastitis" and she was right. Within 48 hours, after some antibiotics I was back on my feet and feeling great again. So relieved not to be sick with something my baby could catch or something that would keep me in bed for a week! So if you're a breastfeeding mother keep this in mind should you begin to feel as I did. The symptoms for Mastitis can include tenderness on the breast, redness in blotches near the affected area, fever, the sensation of hot areas on the breast. If you have had cracked or bleeding nipples (as so many of us do in the early weeks) or if you breasts become engorged and aren't drained properly with baby's feed or if your bra is too tight and restricts the ducts you might be more susceptible to having mastitis. There is loads of advice on how to avoid it or once you have it, how to relieve it and often you can stop it before it gets really bad - if you just know what to look out for. So I do hope that you will now that I have shared my story. Here's a link for some more in depth information from the experts: https://www.breastfeeding.asn.au//common-concerns/mastitis And if you have anything else you wonder about feel free to let us know!
