25.01.2022 BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENT This first time mama absolutely rocked her birth! I talk incessantly about positioning for labour, posterior babies, tools to optimise the pelvic space....... But some babies are born to be born stargazers (don't even pardon the pun) The birthing body is truly incredible. And the mindset and power it takes to navigate the twists and turns of birth never ceases to amaze me. With her loving partner by her side this incredible mama brought her stargazer earthside with love and trust. Her body and baby knew exactly what to do. Look at that incredible moulding of baby's head Congratulations to our newest hypno-parents and hypnobub. 25.01.2022 HAVING A BABY IN S.E. QLD INDEPENDENT MIDWIVES Also known as private midwives. ... With this option you are also able to select a provider that aligns with your birth preferences. You choose a midwife who attends all of your antenatal, birth and postpartum care. Some private midwives choose to practice in the antenatal and postpartum periods only, meaning you can choose to birth at a public hospital and receive all of your other care by your chosen midwife. Some private midwives practice in the homebirth setting only, while others have visitation rights at local hospitals, and others are able to provide labour support (but not 'medical' care) in the hospital setting. It is important to know what capacity your midwife practices in different settings - for example if you plan to homebirth but choose to transfer to hospital in labour. Not all public hospitals support private midwifery access. Endorsed private midwives offer Medicare rebates antenatal and postnatal care, but currently homebirth is not supported by Medicare (*if this sounds like something you would like to see change you should email AHPRA*). Cost wise it is comparable to private hospital birth, with prices varying between practitioners. There is evidence that supports continuity of midwifery care as the gold standard for women and babies, with improved outcomes regardless of the planned place of birth. Did you choose private midwives for your care? Tell us about it below!!

25.01.2022 New Birth Story has gone live on my Blog (link in Bio). Lizzie joined me at 39 weeks for her Hypnobirthing course. We managed to squeeze everything in with a couple weeks to spare (thanks Benji for staying comfy a little while longer.... until 42+1 weeks!). This birth story has a bit of everything! I can personally attest to the level of trust, determination, and patience it takes to go past 42 weeks. Lizzie and Alex navigate their preferences with their local hospital, using... the BRAINS technique to make an informed decision to decline induction and go home to await active labour. In the peace and privacy of their birth space, and with the loving support of her birth partner, Lizzie spontaneously labours and births in her home where she wanted to be. Her little boy arrives through the veil of his placental membranes, brought gently to the surface by his mamas loving hands. This awesome birth story also includes a beautiful birth video snippet, and I was all tears watching this family bring their baby earthside! Huge Birth Partner appreciation shoutout to Alex! You can truly see the value of a strong advocate in this story. It is SO IMPORTANT that your birth partner understands and supports your birth preferences AND is willing to stand up for them. Awesome team work guys and biggest congratulations on your beautiful little family. 25.01.2022 We know that vocalization in labor and birth can be beneficial. Deep moans vs high pitched. When we relax and loosen the voice we relax and loosen our pelvic floor. Try it. Artist: Luisa Alexandre (@luisaalexandre on IG).

24.01.2022 Your baby will always be a part of you. When you carry a child in your womb some of their cells enter your blood stream. Mother's carry these cells with them for many years to come. These cells have been found decades later in the tissues of their mother. This phenomenon is scientifically called microchimerism.... Whether you carried your child for a moment in your womb, or held them in your arms... you carry them in your heart forever. We often avoid things that we find difficult to face. It's understandable to want to avoid discomfort. But some mamas, some families, have no choice but to face the grief of losing a child head on. The immeasurable pain of holding your baby in your heart when you cannot hold them in your arms. I hope if this is your story that you are able to find some comfort in knowing your baby is with you always. In being their mother you are irrevocably changed, and you will carry them always. @withlife_48 @abreathoflife.photography

23.01.2022 Getaway!! I will be offline for 3 days while my little family spends some much needed time away. I will respond to all messages and enquiries when we get back on Wednesday evening.

22.01.2022 When delving into the deep sea of research, emerging evidence, and recommendations surrounding pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and breastfeeding, Remember that #factsarenotattacks Do not let those feelings overcome you, because the evidence is not judging you. ... You do the best you can with the knowledge, tools, and support you have in your individual circumstances at the time. The evidence says that physiological, undisturbed vaginal birth is best for mums and babies. You had a caesarean. That does not mean you didn't give yourself and your baby the best birth you could. The evidence says exclusive breastfeeding for at least 1 year is best for mums and babies. You had to stop breastfeeding at 2 weeks. That doesn't mean you haven't given your baby the best nutrition you could with the support available to you. The evidence says pharmacological pain relief in labour increases rates of instrumental birth, caesarean birth, postpartum haemorrhage, and disturbances to bonding and breastfeeding. You chose to use medication during your birth. Mama, you birthed your baby with strength, love, and with the tools you had available to you. You are enough. You have done enough. You can only do the next right thing, with the information, tools, and support you have available to you at that time, in that specific circumstance. The facts are not there to judge you. Sharing the facts is not done to shame you. If you find yourself triggered or feeling attacked by someone sharing evidence that contradicts your experience, try to look inward at the reasons you are feeling that way. Maybe you need to forgive yourself for not knowing more at the time. Maybe you need to release yourself from the disappointment that your circumstances weren't what you hoped they would be. Maybe you need to heal from the experience you had. But don't let that inner voice tell you that you are less, that your birth was less, that your experience is less. You are everything. #mothermoonhypnobirthing #mothermoon #hypnobirthing #hypnobirthingaustralia #positivebirthmovement #positivebirthprogram #birth #breastfeeding #evidence #factsarefacts #youareenough

22.01.2022 If there is one thing you can do RIGHT NOW to ensure your best birth experience, it’s this: Choose a care provider who is an EXPERT in the type of birth you ar...e planning. If you are planning a safe, skilled cesarean birth, you should hire someone who is an expert at cesarean sections. You wouldn’t hire a doctor for a c-section who said, Well actually I’m not really comfortable with that type of birth, but I’ll let you do it if you want, I suppose If you’re planning a safe, natural, unmedicated birth, you should hire someone who is an EXPERT at supporting natural birth. A doctor with a 30% c-section rate is not a natural birth expert. Neither is a doctor who does routine episiotomies, or doesn’t understand how to catch a baby unless mom is laying on her back. A doctor who says Well, most of my clients do end up choosing an epidural, but if you want to go natural you can do that, I suppose is NOT an expert in unmedicated birth. When you find the right care provider, they will understand your birth plan before you even show it to them, because it’s what they already do EVERY DAY. ~Lauralyn Curtis . 21.01.2022 This beautiful group are well on their way to their informed, empowered, positive birth after joining me for unit 1 of the @hypnobirthingaustralia Positive Birth Program at @newlife_midwifery I am so excited for the next three weeks with these amazing humans! #mothermoon #mothermoonhypnobirthing #hypnobirthing #hypnobirthingaustralia #positivebirthmovement #positivebirthprogram #birthprep #ipswichhypnobirthing

21.01.2022 Is your partner a little bit hesitant about Hypnobirthing? I have never had a partner leave my course feeling the same way as when they arrived. So many partners are either ... 1) totally unsure what they have signed up for Or 2) sceptical that it will work at all But throughout the course you can see the ah ha moments happening. You can see the way they look at birth changing. You can see them stepping into their role as birth partner more and more each day. I get messages from clients being so overjoyed that their partner is taking an active role in the preparation for birth. Birth stories from partners saying how amazing it was to be able to be able to provide that support and be involved in the labour and birth. It is such a wonderful thing to hear if you are tossing up whether to do this program or not - just say YES - it will be the best thing you ever do.

21.01.2022 Unpopular Opinion Toxic positivity in birth culture is almost as dangerous as straight up having a negative birth culture. I believe it is so important to share the positive aspects of childbirth, rather than focusing on the negative, the risks, and the overuse of intervention - HOWEVER ... When we swing too far the other way, pressuring women to feel #blessed #blissed #everythingisperfect then we undermine their experiences and their feelings. It is OKAY to feel disappointment about certain aspects of your experience while still feeling that overall you had a positive, informed, empowered birth. You can wish your circumstances had been different AND feel like you made the best choices with the information and tools you had available at the time. We can talk about all the amazing, powerful, beautiful, incredible moments of childbirth AND the parts that weren't totally awesome because the two are not mutually exclusive. This is a safe space. You can share your real experience and all of those feelings without justifying that you love your baby, that your birth was positive, or that you did what was best for you and your baby.

19.01.2022 A big welcome if you're new to Mother Moon Hypnobirthing. I thought I'd do another little post about my Why in case we haven't been properly introduced. I'm Jess (Hi, Jess)... I'm the admin, accountant, transport, event coordinator, IT guru*, social media rep, Web designer, midwife and Hypnobirthing Australia practitioner behind Mother Moon Hypnobirthing. I have always been drawn to childbirth education. It is one of my favourite parts of being a midwife. Being able to give YOU the tools, knowledge, and confidence to make your own choices and head into your birth feeling excited - that's what it is all about for me. I felt limited in the education I could provide within my scope in the hospital system, so 8 years ago I branched out and researched independent courses I could teach. I wanted to provide comprehensive, holistic, and realistic education to women and their birth partners. I found the @hypnobirthingaustralia positive birth program and felt this best aligned with my philosophy and incorporated the most evidence backed information. Relaxation tools are absolutely fantastic, but I am really passionate about supporting informed choice! If you don't know your options, you don't have any. Knowledge is power. I'd been teaching the course privately alongside my full time work as a midwife until I had my own little hypnobub in 2019. I used ALL of the tools I teach throughout my own pregnancy and birth journey. I know that this was completely invaluable in having the positive birth I envisioned. You can read The Birth of Theodore on my blog :) I enjoying having the perspective of HBA practitioner, care provider AND birthing woman. If you join me for any of my classes you'll see my beautiful hypnotoddler in all his glory. My business and my family flow together in my life. I love that I can do something that doesn't keep me away from my family, all while helping other families on their journeys. What a privilege to do something I love every day. You'll also see that I am a coffee addict and never start the day without a large almond milk cappuccino in my hand. Coffee is my HOW. Please say hi! I'd love to meet you

19.01.2022 I understand this may be a concern for some people. This list is based on aged care to protect our loved ones that are in these facilities or homes. I will be monitoring all directives that come from QLD and Federal government but for now classes will continue to go ahead as planned. We will continue taking precautions to prevent the spread and protect out community.

19.01.2022 Exactly what I say to parents of Deaf kids , our support workers working with Deaf clients or our Interpreters Let the struggles and the process happen naturall...y , sometimes sitting back, watching and letting them do it themselves is better than doing it for them Give them the key to their car ( tools for a good life ) let them have the choices and control and be there when they ask you to help Don’t take over and think you know better and if you do have to help show them how so they can do it next time by themselves - empower them and connect them Give them all the tools they need and let them pick what works best for them

18.01.2022 Forgive yourself for the choices you made before you knew better. We are all on a journey of growth and discovery. We constantly learn, develop, and evolve. As a care provider, a midwife, I am constantly expanding my skillset, learning new resources, and building my knowledge so I can help women and their families have the best experience possible. ... But we all start somewhere. And I think about how many years it has taken me to get to this point. I think of how much additional training I have had to do to get to this point. I think of the births I attended before I knew better women centred skills. I know I always did my best with what I had available to me. But now I know I could do better. It has taken me years to find my voice and speak out. I still find conflict particularly difficult and confronting, but now my voice is backed with the evidence, training and experience to withstand the criticism that baby-midwife-Jess struggled to overcome. I keep learning every day. My own pregnancy and birth taught me things I would never have learnt in my workplace. My Hypnobirthing has brought me so many more learning opportunities and continually highlights where the system let's midwives and women down. I am so passionate about bringing this knowledge to as many women, birth partners, midwives, and obstetricians as I possibly can - because I KNOW how much of a difference it makes. Never stop seeking knowledge and tools to keep improving. Grow in every way you can. When you know better you can do better.

18.01.2022 Mother Moon Hypnobirthing Mother Moon Hypnobirthing Hypnobirthing provides an extensive toolkit for labour and birth; plenty of practical techniques that provi...de comfort and support your body's birthing journey, lots of knowledge and resources to build trust in birth and facilitate informed decision making, abundant positivity for normalising birth in many different circumstances... But some of the best benefits come from the CONDITIONING of the subconscious during pregnancy. It's in the practice. It's in the preparation. Affirmations become your inner cheersquad during labour. Anchor touch provides a deep level of grounding security. Hypnotherapy techniques enable you to control aspects of your physiology. Visualisations facilitate brain activity reducing the perception of painful stimulus. Sights, sounds, smells, sensations... All built into your practice to CONDITION your body and mind for a calm, relaxed state. This conditioning comes with repetition; with incorporating these anchors into your every day. Hypnobirthing isn't something you learn on one day and put aside for your upcoming labour. Hypnobirthing is built into your pregnancy mindset, every day, at every opportunity. This conditioning is something that stays with you always. It is not homework, or another chore to be done before baby is born. Hypnobirthing practice is beneficial to your entire pregnancy, birthing, and postpartum experience. It is not just worth the investment, it is worth the time. Still to this day my labour aromatherapy blend brings me peace, my anchor touch calms me down, my birth music helps me relax, and my affirmations remind me of my strength. I can teach you the tools. I can give you knowledge. I can offer support and guidance. But the conditioning - that's up to you. 18.01.2022 With all the conversation around birth rights, it seems timely to re-share this reminder that, in our modern world, weve developed standards and pathways and g...uidelines which guide the health care that is offered in systems. But the standard path wont be the best way for everyone and you might not think its the right one for you. Dont forget that standards and guidelines are created so that bureaucratic systems can run smoothly. They are only an offer and its ok to say, thats not right for me. 17.01.2022 15 - 20 % of women are still pregnant after 41 weeks. 3 - 4% are still pregnant after 42 weeks. My baby was born at 42 + 1. He knew when to be born. ... Surrendering to the process is 100% the hardest part. Have faith. Trust. Your baby is coming. Your baby knows when to be born. #Repost @midwifeandmedic My baby knows when to be born... One of the hardest things leading up to labour and birth is the wait... As someone who likes to be in control, I struggled a lot with feeling like everything was out of my control. 17.01.2022 As a midwife I often find myself saying, what gets the baby in gets the baby out, as I encourage people to tap into their sexuality during the end of pregnanc...y and birth. What happens when we make birth sexual? It becomes intimate, intense, fun, and maybe even enjoyable. It also forces any providers in the room to confront their relationship with consent during birth. Would you ever put your fingers in someone’s vagina during a sex act without checking in on how it makes them feel first? Would you insist you know better than them about what is right for their body? I don’t like talking about orgasmic birth because it sets people up for significant disappointment (I’ve never seen someone spontaneously orgasm during birth), but I do like to talk about birth as a deeply intimate, sexual experience (if that language works well for my patient). If I can treat it that way I end up always prioritizing the comfort and needs of my patient and their partner(s). I ALWAYS employ consent - giving myself the out of saying ‘except in emergency situations’ allows consent to be a luxury rather than a necessity. There is ALWAYS time to explain and ask for permission. #consent #consentinlabor #birth #laboranddelivery #midwifery #labor #orgasmicbirth #birthconsent #obstetricviolence #midwifelife See more

16.01.2022 Woke up to this most incredible review this morning from @_ebonyrivas who did my Zoom class right in the middle of Covid lockdown. Safe to say my day is made I just want to say a massive thank you to Jess for this amazing course. I did a hypnobirthing course with the intention of having an unmedicated labour, unfortunately my daughter was posterior, and was stuck which meant intervention was necessary. I was able to go into labour naturally and was able to labour for a ver...y long time with my hypnobirthing techniques however my motherly instinct knew something was off. Im so glad I was educated on all of my options and was able to use techniques throughout the whole process. I still feel so empowered about my labour. Throughout my whole pregnancy and even after the birth of my daughter Jess has been there answering all my queries and supporting me through my postpartum journey. I also did my course through zoom due to covid, so I couldnt even imagine the experience in person. This is my tired mum review, I wish I could find the words and the time with a new born to write a more detailed review but more importantly a thank you. Please do not hesitate to do this course or link in with Jess I can promise you will take a lot away from it, so will your partner. Thank you Jess for making my pregnancy, labour and postpartum so much easier. Thank you for empowering me through my choices and look forward to my birthing day without fear. I dont know what I would have done without this course. I just hope one day Im lucky enough to experience it again. Your kindness, support and knowledge hasnt gone unappreciated. Thank you, thank you, thank you. This is why I do what I do. What a sacred honour to share in such a special journey. #mothermoonhypnobirthing #mothermoon #hypnobirthing #hypnobirthingaustralia #ipswichhypnobirthing #springfieldhypnobirthing #brisbanehypnobirthing #birth #review #midwife #pregnant #thankyou #antenataleducation #birthtechniques #labour

14.01.2022 Are you planning to birth in hospital? Have you thought about how you will transfer from labouring in your home space to arriving in the birthing suit? What will you take with you?... Which route is quickest, smoothest, and safest? What techniques will you use for comfort while you are seated in the car? While you walk through the hospital? While you are being admitted? Do you know the process of admission assessment? How will you minimise the impact transfer can have on slowing down labour? We address all of these things in my classes. So much of what we share, and what I teach, is about the before and after of these moments. The beautiful images of relaxing in warm water. The powerful moments of a woman's body working at prime capacity. The emotional moments of meeting your beautiful baby for the first time. But these moments, the in between moments, are important to, and we work on how to make every moment count. #Repost @andieandolliephotography Royal Brisbane & Womens Hospital I especially love when I get the chance to capture my client's arriving at the hospital. It tells so much of the story that is often forgotten. What kind of day it was, how the sky looked, what colours you walked passed down the hallways to meet your baby, those last steps you took in the outside world before your life changed forever... it's just so magical. 14.01.2022 Ongoing support is part of the deal when you sign up for classes with me. If you have done a Mother Moon Hypnobirthing course then pop into our support group to connect with other mamas and partners, ask questions, get encouragement, and the casual coffee catch up with bumps and babies.

14.01.2022 Didn't it? ... So you were planning an unmedicated birth. Or a home birth.... Or maybe you were planning to get the epidural... But that didn't happen. In my classes we talk about what a positive birth experience means to YOU. Frequently the characteristics of a positive birth that my groups mention include Being Respected Feeling Safe Being Heard Making Informed Decisions Feeling Calm Feeling Empowered. These things do not rely on the specifics of when, where, or how you give birth, But on the support, knowledge, preparation, tools, and trust between you and your birthing team. Even if NOTHING goes to plan, your birth can still be empowering, calm, positive, respected, beautiful. You can have the very best birth knowing that you made the best choices in the circumstances you faced at the time. And after all, THAT was the plan.

13.01.2022 The clearest, most rigorous and valid research we have in Australia at the moment comparing place of birth for low risk women are: 1. Reitsma et al (2020) 500,0...00 births - https://www.sciencedirect.com//artic/pii/S2589537020300638 2. Homer et al (2019) 1.25M births - https://bmjopen.bmj.com/content/9/10/e029192 3. Scarf et al (2018) meta analysis comprising of 28 studies - https://www.sciencedirect.com//artic/pii/S0266613818300974 When comparing women considered low risk and high risk: 1. Davies-Tuck et al (2018) - https://bmcpregnancychildbirth.biomedcentral.com//s12884-0 These studies all conclude that planned Homebirths reduce the likelihood of interventions and corresponding morbidities for mums and babies. For women considered low risk, there is no difference in perinatal mortality between planned home and planned hospital births. But only 0.3% of Australian women can access this choice, 25% through publicly funded homebirth and 75% with women paying privately. 13.01.2022 No one goes into their career thinking great now I'll be able to disempower and belittle women ... and yet one look at this page @TheySaidToMe shows just how far some providers have strayed from their professions ethos.

13.01.2022 "How can I get ready to breastfeed?" I'm asked this A LOT - particularly from second time mums who didn't meet their breastfeeding goals with their previous bab...y. So I thought I'd do a bit of a checklist. LEARN as much as you can. from REPUTABLE sources. You might be surprised to find out that internet forums, your mate from work, or great aunty Enid aren't the best sources of up to date information regarding breastfeeding! What we know about lactation and babies has changed quite a lot in the last 20 years so it's always a good idea to get support from somewhere you know is definitely evidence based and up to date. These sources include: Your midwife Breastfeeding helplines (LLL, NCT, National Line) Peer support groups GOOD books (The Positive Breastfeeding Book by Amy Brown, You've Got it In You by Emma Pickett, The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding by LLL.) A breastfeeding prep class (Available on the NHS or privately.) Evidence based Facebook pages and websites (Look for the breastfeeding charities, IBCLCs, Kellymom, breastfeeding.support etc) Avoid sources such as: Formula companies Family and friends if they might struggle to stay objective Websites which aren't evidence based, or forums where incorrect information isn't corrected by admin. ASK your midwife about antenatal hand expressing. This is where you collect colostrum by hand expressing it in the last weeks of pregnancy. Benefits include: Having colostrum to give baby instead of formula IF supplements are needed. Teaches you the skill of hand expressing before you are trying to feed a screamy 2 day old. Shows you that your body has milk in there! Sends a strong message to hospital staff that breastfeeding is important to you. WATCH videos of post birth breast crawls. This is where a newborn baby is placed on mum's tummy right after birth and uses their reflexes to find the breast and latch on. It takes around an hour for this to happen (if mum had no labour meds and baby is full term and healthy.) Lots of mums say that if given the time and space for a breast crawl breastfeeding seems to go better for them and baby. UNDERSTAND that 8x a day is the MINIMUM number of breastfeeds we want to see. EXPECT more like 12! EXPECT cluster feeding. This is where a baby has a few hours at about the same time each day where they are fussy, pulling on and off the breast, and acting as though the world is about to end. As long as they are: Gaining weight as expected Producing lots of wet and dirty nappies each day Feeding happily for most of the day and night Not causing you pain Then this is nearly always normal behaviour. BE PREPARED to seek extra support. NHS midwives, support workers and Health Visitors are awesome people who will do their best (and more) to support you, but they are not generally the experts in breastfeeding. Free additional support comes from peer supporters, breastfeeding counsellors and the national helplines. Paid for extra support usually comes from IBCLCs. EXTRA tips to consider Breastfeeding doesn't have to be all or nothing. Combination feeding with formula or donated human milk is valid and your baby will benefit from ANY breastmilk. Consider night time parenting. Babies feed a lot and trying to sit up for several hours night after night may put you at risk of falling asleep while holding baby. Look into the Safe Sleep 7 and be prepared if you want / need to bedshare. The WHO recommends babies are given breastmilk for at least 2 years. This is a global recommendation, but there is no upper limit for breastfeeding. Natural weaning ages seem to be around 3 - 5 years, with some children feeding longer. There is no evidence that this is in anyway harmful for parent or child. If you start out needing to give top ups of formula or expressed milk this doesn't need to be forever. Careful management with someone skilled in lactation support can often help you return to exclusive breastfeeding.

11.01.2022 Lemon trees should be pruned back and their fruit removed for the first two years, allowing nutrients to nourish the tree's roots, trunk, and branches first. Th...e result is a stronger foundation and healthier tree that is able to bear richer, more abundant fruit, when the time is right. What does this have to do with babies? Well, the same can be said for people before trying for another child. The World Health Organisation recommends a spacing of 33 months between live births, which means waiting two years between birth and conception of the next child. Their research has found this pregnancy spacing leads to better health outcomes for both mother and baby, including reduced risk of high blood pressure, pre-eclampsia, premature rupture of membranes, low birth weight, miscarriage, still birth, premature birth and maternal death. We often talk of postpartum and the fourth trimester being the 12 weeks after birth. But once postpartum - always postpartum, and the demands on our resources for a healthy mind, body and spirit tend to remain high for at least two years after birth. Nutrient depletion, sleep deprivation and hormonal imbalance are common, and can have significant effects on maternal and reproductive health that are not always immediately apparent, and not often spoken about. Of course, this optimal pregnancy spacing isnt optimal for everyone. There are many reasons why people choose to conceive sooner, and many parents with short inter-birth intervals who achieve healthy pregnancies and babies. But those with time on their side may choose to nurture themselves that little bit longer, and appreciate knowing the benefits of nourishing their bodies, replenishing their resources, and filling their own cup, before bringing forth new life. * * * * * As a nutritionist and childbirth preparation practitioner, I work with parents throughout preconception, pregnancy, postpartum and beyond. 09.01.2022 Caesarean Birth is birth. It may not be plan A. You may have invested a lot into preparing for a vaginal birth. But sometimes the best choice for you and your baby is a caesarean. ... You can make your belly birth into a wonderful experience, too. Positive birth is not a one track journey - there are so many pathways to a positive birth experience. They start with knowledge, preparation, tools, and support. They aren't without obstacles or challenges. They aren't just about a healthy baby. And they aren't always plan A. Tonight I worked with a fantastic couple preparing for their (most likely) caesarean birth. They have already completed my @hypnobirthingaustralia Positive Birth Program, and are now adapting their birth preferences in preparation for a medically necessary caesarean birth. We covered in detail what to expect from belly birth - from admission to discharge - and where their preferences can be adapted to suit the change of circumstances. I'm so passionate about helping people prepare for birth - real birth. That means holding space for the tears, the fears, the unknowns. It means being transparent, open and honest, evidence based, and flexible. It is all about using knowledge as power, and supporting the birthing parents to harness that power for themselves. I can't wait to hear their empowered birth story @joy_steed92

09.01.2022 The level of relaxation you are aiming for during a surge. Not because every surge is blissful. Not because every surge is easy. ... But because in order to surrender to the building and releasing of every surge you must let go of the tension in your body. Just like floating in the deep ocean, waves rising and falling gently beneath you. If you struggle, tense, to stay atop of the waves you will find your body sinking down, working harder. If you relax, breathe deeply, release your muscles, the waves will lift you up and bring you back down safely. Let your surges bring your baby forth. Let your body do what it is designed to do. Let yourself be brought to the peak of every wave, trusting that it will bring you safely to rest again. #Repost @the.blossoming.midwife The female body is an incredible vessel #pregnancy #pregnant #beauty #motherhood #midwifery #midwife #birth #positivebirth #positivepregnancy #postpartum #postpartumbody #womensupportingwomen #mumssupportingmums #mothermoonhypnobirthing #mothermoon #hypnobirthing #hypnobirthingaustralia by @bxcsmxth

09.01.2022 Starting 2021 off with a Boob And a blocked milk duct. So let's talk about some easy steps to help manage blocked ducts and mastitis.... Change up the position of your feed so bub can use their chin to massage the blockage Start taking @qiaraprobiotics for breastfeeding as soon as you notice the symptoms. I take 2 sachets a day until the symptoms resolve. Dangle feeding! Massage the blockage toward the nipple while baby feeds. This can be painful, so you could try vibration instead (think electric toothbrush, vibrator, electric massager, or @milkbarbreastpumps LaVie Lactation Massager) Warmth before/during a feed (warm Epsom salts soak of effected breast for 10 mins, warm shower, heat pack) and Cool after for comfort (ice pack) Drink plenty of water and rest I tend to experience blocked ducts and mastitis more often during holidays or periods of lots of change. Travelling, Christmas, moving house.... Put all three together and it's a recipe for a rough night! I hope your night was better than mine, but if not feel free to share some of the burden in the comments below This here is a safe mama space. #mothermoonhypnobirthing #mothermoon #hypnobirthing #blockedmilkduct #blockedduct #cloggedduct #breastfeeding #bf #mastits #christmastitis #breastfed #probiotocs #happynewyear #2021mama

09.01.2022 Why choose a interactive online birthing course? Pre-recorded courses are fantastic, and it is so wonderful to see this information accessible to more people. But they are absolutely not the same as attending a course in real time with a hypnobirthing practitioner. ... Here's why... When you commit to showing up on specific dates with a practitioner who is teaching in real time, you are going to show up! With a pre-recorded course it's too easy to keep putting it off until tomorrow when you are busy. A live course is interactive! It's not just someone on a screen talking at you. Most people learn will better when you can listen, talk, and practice all in real time. I invite you to participate from the comfort of your own home. You get to ask questions as they arise during ojr sessions which ensures that you truly understand what we are talking about. And I can tailor our information to you! You get to practice the tools and techniques together so you can step into your birth feeling confident with the toolkit! As with all of my courses I ensure that you and your partner get individualised care. You will not be one of many! My group courses are kept small so I can get to know you all, and allow time for you all to ask questions and share your journey. You won't get the same ongoing personalised support with a pre-recorded course. I am there for you always, with my experience, knowledge and empathy. I am always willing to help you navigate any challenges throughout your pregnancy, birth and postpartum journey and provide you with reassurance and a listening ear. When you choose Mother Moon Hypnobirthing you get far more than just the course information. You also support a small family business run solely by me You know that 100% of my passion, skill and time is going to you. This course is discounted to $495 for 12 hours interactive learning, online resources, extra readings, videos, birth stories, and a physical folio sent to your door. Get in touch to book your space in my upcoming Online Course! @lilyfernphotography_newborn for @mothermoon_hypnobirthing

08.01.2022 Birth Announcement I have been eagerly awaiting to share the news of this little one's arrival. Shared with permission, here is Lizzy's birth story (link to blog in bio): What an amazing, intense, exciting, emotional and loving experience birth is! One of the best things I did during pregnancy was joining Hypnobirthing Australia and educating myself on birth, baby, calming techniques and breastfeeding. ... Even though I was induced with the prostaglandinf gel due to being overdue, I utilised these calming/breathing techniques to help with the surges and the thoughts in my head while in labour. Knowing how to calm myself and breathingthrough the surges not only helped me physically, but mentally. I approached labour with a calm attitude and I believe this is what helped my body go into labour itself with no syntocinon drip. Not knowing what to expect with the first pregnancy, I used gasto help ease the intense sensations I felt when the surges came through. Knowing how to breathe properly helped me get through this. In the bearing down stages I knew I was so close to meeting our little girl and even though it was intense and challenging(I had to do this without gas so I felt everything!). The best feeling was when our baby girls head and shoulders slipped through and the relief, love, joy and excitement you feel is just phenomenal. I had the best experience with pregnancy, labour and birthand I’m so blessed and grateful to have our little girl in this world healthy and safe! I would do pregnancy and birth ten times over! (If my body let’s me lol) A massive thank you to Jess for her knowledge and positivity throughout the experience. 07.01.2022 Khia's birth story is now (finally) up on my Birth Stories blog. This story is so close to my heart, after having our first babies only a few weeks apart and watching the effects of her traumatic experience on her start to motherhood. I am so proud of the work she and Woosub put in to this birth and working in partnership with their care providers to have a positive birth. The one thing Khia didn't want was to be induced again, but after weighing up her options with the inf...ormation she had available and the circumstances at the time, she made a calm and confident decision to accept induction at 42 weeks. And she had an incredible birth. This story is a perfect example of the difference education, preparation, tools and support can really make to your birth! 06.01.2022 Penny's incredible birth story is now live on my Birth Stories Blog. An incredible journey of a strong second time mama navigating the twists and turns of bringing a new life earthside. From choosing independent midwives and planning a home birth mid pregnancy, to making calm informed choices for her baby's birth, this mama faced every turn with the true power of a birthing goddess.... I felt in control the whole time. I was well informed and comfortable. This was not the birth I had originally imagined in my head, but I am left feeling empowered and relaxed and at no point did I have any fear. 06.01.2022 WHY THE FOURTH TRIMESTER MATTERS We are all familiar with the three trimesters of pregnancy, and tend to travel through them in various stages of excitement, di...scomfort and anticipation for the arrival of our precious baby. What many people dont realise until theyre in it is that we also experience what is termed the fourth trimester. This covers the first three months after birth, and it is a period of adjustment for your baby to life outside the womb. He or she has spent the best part of 40 weeks cosied up inside you: cocooned against the elements, never hungry, constantly rocked, next to your heart. As a result, adapting to life outside, on his or her own, takes time and can help to explain the neediness of a newborn. Around the world, in many different traditions, the weeks and months following pregnancy and birth are honoured as a special time for the mother herself: it is a transition. In many many cultures, women are not expected to carry on their normal lives, there is no pressure to snap back to where they were before. But. It isnt just about the baby. The fourth trimester is also a time of huge adjustment for any new mother, whether its her first, third or seventh time. Around the world, in many different traditions, the weeks and months following pregnancy and birth are honoured as a special time for the mother herself: it is a transition. 06.01.2022 As a midwife who worked in a hospital antenatal clinic I can honestly say I did my best with the time allocated to me - and fought for as much time as we could get - but I 1000% advocate for this model of care in which time can truly be allocated to the little things that make a BIG difference. Education and support is 90% of antenatal care, which is what brought me to Hypnobirthing in the first place. Being informed and prepared makes all the difference in the world.

05.01.2022 Too early for pumpkin pics? I hope not! Dating pregnancy is not an exact science and there is considerable variation between women. It is normal that some ...women naturally have longer pregnancies than others. The idea that something terrible will happen if a woman remains pregnant for a moment longer than 42 weeks just isnt true. The baby doesnt turn into a pumpkin at midnight. Its so important that women have full information and are able to look at the pros and cons of different courses of action before making the decisions that are right for them. Part of that is sorting the myths from the facts. This quote is from my book, Inducing Labour: making informed decisions." 05.01.2022 I truly found my calling in midwifery education. While a career holds its own importance, a vocation evokes inmost gifts, abilities, passions, dreams and a broader life purpose. I started teaching because I wanted to reach more women and families with real, in depth, comprehensive education. I wanted to dedicate time to preparing women for birth; time that just wasn't available in the hospital system. For so many midwives there is the passion, drive and desire to properly pr...epare and support families on this journey - but just not the TIME. I since found a strong passion for educating care providers too. In birth suite I could help one woman, on family at a time. In my classes I can help more... maybe 5 to 10 families a month. In teaching care providers I can help every family they go on to care for. In teaching care providers I can help hundreds of women. I love love love teaching the @hypnobirthingaustralia Positive Birth Program as my primary course. It is the gold standard of education in my opinion for women and their birth partners. To then be able to share this information, and my skillset, with other midwives and obstetricians is such a privilege. These skills changed my life, my entire practice, and have benefited so many families in so many ways. I hope in creating opportunities for care providers to broaden their skills and knowledge we will one by one change the face of birth as we know it. There are many providers who don't know the impact they have on the physiology of birth. Who don't understand the importance of their language, tone, presence, actions and environment on how birth will unfold for the woman. I don’t blame anyone for not having this understanding, it is a systemic issue. But there is so much opportunity to learn more and do better. If you've read this far thankyou. But please encourage your colleagues, your care providers, to put in the work and really helpmate a difference. My next Supportive Caregivers course is the 12th of September. Please register your interest now because this will sell out Tickets will be available next week on my website. Xx @ittakesavillagemidwifery

04.01.2022 Little fun fact for you this evening. If you’re yet to hear of matrescence, please give it a Google. But to summarise, it’s basically the physical, emotional, h...ormonal and social transition to becoming a mother. And this can be pretty intense. It’s even often misdiagnosed as postnatal depression - which is pretty alarming - and goes to show how little nurturing and supportive education new parents receive when they first enter parenthood. "It's peachy," we say. And when it's not, we automatically feel broken. Whilst it's important to normalise how intense this transition can be, we don't want to miss postnatal depression either. So I truly do see how this has happened when you've got a 15 minute appointment with your GP. We end up erring on the side of caution. But we really need to learn to watch for those subtleties. Because there is a difference. And imagine having a very normal biological and emotional process pathologised to the point where we don’t even hear about it?! We should be asking: How have your values been challenged? How are you feeling about the shift in identity? What does your routine look like now? Do you have space to process your thoughts? What feels big/heavy/hard to carry? What is joy for you? What does parenthood bring to the surface? What support do you have/need/want? Not just about symptoms. Mental health is literally never just symptoms. There are human beings behind those every single time. But the bit that I wanted to mention, is that this transitional process is said to last ten years. And. I. did. not. know. this. Where is this information when you have a baby?! TEN. YEARS! So, it’s no wonder that the majority of my clients and those who access my resources live with toddlers. This process is massive and it can take a little while to come out of the fog of newborn life only to realise that: hey wait, this isn’t getting any easier Take heart in knowing this. Knowledge is power and it can be a relief to realise that you are not alone, it’s not in your head and there’s an actual name for it! Ten years. If you’re still figuring this gig out, give yourself some more space and compassion. Explains a lot, doesn’t it?

04.01.2022 Maternity leave is such a special time of transition. It is an opportunity to go within, to focus on yourself and your baby as you both prepare for birth. It may feel like there is SO much to do before your baby arrives, but time spent in rest is not wasted. Some tips for making the most of your maternity leave, inspired by @birth_bubble : Practice your Hypnobirthing techniques... Do something you look forward to every day, just for you Spend time in the fresh air Meal prep (you with thank yourself later!) Chill out. Seriously. Being alone is never the same again. Make plans, but limit your commitments and give yourself permission to say no or cancel plans if you need rest. Often leading up to labour the birthing intuition leads to the desire to retreat and nest. Baby will choose their birth day, so just surrender control and take it one beautiful day at a time. #mothermoonhypnobirthing #mothermoon #hypnobirthing #hypnobirthingaustralia #ipswichhypnobirthing #springfieldhypnobirthing #brisbanehypnobirthing #hypnobirthingipswich #positivebirthmovement #maternityleave #earlylabour #mamamatters

04.01.2022 Big blueberries Small blueberries A handful of blueberries Feeding on demand is the ideal. You body and baby will adjust each feed to baby's needs. ... The whole feed 8-12 times each day principle is to help avoid the situation where a baby who is having issues and is having long breaks between every feed, or only has snack feeds and is missing the more filling feeds, goes unnoticed by normalising their behaviour she isn't hungry yet he's just a sleepy baby oh, they're such a GOOD baby, they sleep through the night already Be led by your baby. Feed on demand. A MINIMUM of 8-12 times each day.

04.01.2022 BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENT I was super chill and confident the whole time, surges rolled through my body like an ocean storm, big waves smashing the side of a ship in torrential rain. After a 3 hour active labour I roared her out and Nathan received her. I have had the pleasure of knowing this mama for years, and the incredible privilege of being present at her first birth (under very different circumstances to this one). ... It was so wonderful to see the transformation in mama and dad over the course of our Hypnobirthing classes together, and I am so overjoyed at the difference they both experienced with this birthing journey. 04.01.2022 HAVING A BABY IN S.E. QLD PRIVATE HOSPITAL This option is most commonly guided by your level private health insurance. There are out of pocket costs involved with visits, tests, interventions and admission. It is important to review your level of cover before choosing a hospital or provider. ... When choosing a private care provider you have the benefit of being able to interview different providers until you find the right fit for you and your birth. Remember to ask lots of questions about their birth philosophy, what options are available and how supportive they are of the kind of birth you are planning. Private obstetricians generally work with a team of midwives (who work rostered shifts similar to a public hospital). You may get to know the midwives if they work in a small team, or you may not if they work as part of a larger practice. Midwives at the hospital will provide most of your labour care, with your obstetrician being available for consults, reviews, and called in to catch your baby. Private hospitals usually entitle you to a private room and a longer stay in hospital after you give birth. Private hospitals are usually associated with having nicer facilities and better food (because you are paying for it). Many private obstetricians practice according to their own style and preferences. If you do have an idea of your birth preference and know your priorities, look for an obstetrician who also values these priorities in their practice. Some specify that you agree to certain preferences such as not having a doula, birth photographer or water birth for example. Discuss these with your provider BEFORE you commence your care. Some private obstetricians are very supportive of physiological births, or even of birth variations like vaginal breech birth. Remember that obstetricians are specialists in medical birth. Make sure you choose a practitioner that really values and supports what you want from your birth. Private hospitals in our area include: St Andrew's Ipswich Mater Private Brisbane - Hatch Maternity - Kindred Sunnybank Private Greenslopes Have you birthed in a private hospital? 04.01.2022 Women expect midwives to facilitate maternal autonomy yet decision-making in maternity care is commonly geared towards obtaining consent.

03.01.2022 Choosing the right care provider for your birth can be an overwhelming task. There are so many considerations! So how do you find the one? Interview a number of options! Dont waste your time with someone you sense is not going to be supportive of your choices. Ask the difficult and uncomfortable questions early and read the responses with care. If there are red flags early on, consider changing care provider or even to another model of care altogether. 03.01.2022 Moving babies is hard work. . Some mama/baby dyads can navigate birth with less optimal presentations like acyncliticysm and occiput posterior positions. But s...ome babies just don’t fit unless they’re in perfect alignment with their mama’s pelvis. The most common and usual ‘fit’ is when baby spirals through the pelvis from LOT to OA. . This baby had a very long journey though her mother’s pelvis. She started optimally LOT, but because of a prominent pubic arch, could not navigate to OA, so she rotated OP. She also could not descend OP due to a history of a broken tailbone fused inward. . Here we are helping mom to help baby rotate out of direct OP where progress had arrested and give them an option of pushing in the optimal position again. . The supported back bend hurts like crazy, but if started before pushing or used after mom has been in knee chest for a while, it is extremely effective at forcing baby to flip over. (5 contractions or less) . Babies always lay with their backs concave - when you lay them out over the ball their back becomes extended and they rotate back to the ‘fetal position’ to avoid it, thereby moving out of the OP and into LOT or ROT. . This tough cookie of a baby rotated on to ROT taking the long way round the pelvis and was finally born acynclitic OA and restituted ROA after 4 hours and 40 min of pushing. . If you would like to learn more about fetal positioning and repositioning in labor, please join me for the AP Midwifery Workshop in 2021-. @mauilifestories and used with permission from this amazing mama @beachedsoul #onetoughcookie #midwife #homebirthmidwife #homebirthmidwifery #midwiferystudent #midwifelife #midwife #atudentmidwife #midwiferymatters #positionsinbirth #spinthatbaby #neverunderestimatethemagicofbirth #wisewomenhelpedmeout #primipbirth #yesyoucandoittoo #wisewomeneducation @mauimobilemidwife See more

02.01.2022 Birth Announcement Shannon shares her journey through navigating her birth preferences as special circumstances arise during last week of pregnancy and throughout her labour. Despite not going to plan Shannon was able to implement strategies from her Hypnobirthing Australia course, maintain a calm and confident mindset, and be active in making informed choices for herself and baby Lyla. Biggest congratulations to our newest Mother Moon family!... Shannon's Birth Story is now up on my website (link in Bio) "As I was being rushed to theatre, my lovely midwife played the Hypnobirthing Australia affirmations for Caesarean track. I felt my surges getting stronger and stronger and less bearable. I sat on the operating table as the anaesthetist was prepping for the spinal anaesthesia. I had two massive surges. One after the other. I focused on my breathing and was able to sit still. The affirmations were so helpful because I was nervous about the procedure. I was relieved once the contractions stopped. I knew I would be meeting my baby so soon. About 10 mins later, my baby girl was handed to me and placed on my chest while they finished the surgery. Although it wasn’t my original plan, it still was a magical experience that brought my baby girl into the world. I tried so hard to have a natural labour, but things can change in a split second. I’m so thankful that I had the knowledge and tools to have a positive birth experience despite the circumstances. I wouldn't have been able to advocate for myself if it wasn't for Jess's classes. #caesareanbirth #positivecaesarean #mothermoonhypnobirthing #mothermoon #hypnobirthing #hypnobirthingaustralia #positivebirthmovement #positivebirthprogram #hospitalbirth #birthsupport #birthpartner #bellybirth

01.01.2022 October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. The 15th of October is Remembrance Day. This is something I hold close to my heart. My broken heart....
