25.01.2022 True story! About 50% of pregnant women are anaemic, blood loss from childbirth and breastfeeding further accelerated iron loss. Iron is desperately needed for the nerves and brain, low levels can cause fatigue, brain fog, insomnia (the last thing you need with a baby!), anxiety, depression, irritability, weakness, shortness of breath, and sometimes even the compulsion to eat dirt or clay- known as Pica. Get your iron stores checked if you think yours might be low! #iron #anaemia #postnatal #pregnancy #depression #postnataldepression #baby #childbirth

24.01.2022 ~Birth Art~ Have you thought about using art during your pregnancy to prepare for your birth? After reading the book Birthing from Within by Pam England, I did some drawings as a way of putting my visualisations and hopes down on paper. Her book encourages you to draw, paint, sculpt, write or even dance as a way of connecting with your baby and yourself, and exploring your thoughts and often fears around childbirth. It can be anything from drawing yourself pregnant (even... if youre not pregnant but want to be), painting your perfect labour and birth scene, writing your ideal birth plan, drawing yourself as a mother.. anything you like. Its a fantastic self discovery activity and you end up with something that you can keep going back to, looking at, and using as a wonderful, positive tool for when the big day arrives! I drew both my dream births and amazingly I was almost spot on each time! #birth #birthart #pregnant #pregnancy #positivebirth #affirmations #visualisation #baby #mother See more

23.01.2022 Third trimester ultrasounds can be up to 15% inaccurate for calculating your babys weight. That means for a baby estimated to be 3600gm, it may be anywhere from 3060gm and 4140gm! Inductions/ caesarean births should not be advised solely based on the estimated weight of a baby. True cephalopelvic disproportion (baby not fitting through the pelvis) is rare and the only way to truly measure if your baby will fit is to try and give birth! . .... #baby #pregnancy #ultrasound #cpd #induction #birth #positivebirth #birthrights #normalisingbirth See more

23.01.2022 Vernix Caseosa, aka Birth Frosting Did you know that this incredible substance has many benefits? It is a white, creamy biofilm that appears in the last trimester produced in part by fetal sebaceous glands. It is unique to humans! It acts as protection for the babys skin by creating a barrier between the water and the skin. It acts as an insulator, keeping in warmth. When left on the skin to be absorbed, helps the skin transition to a land environment by providing moistur...e and reducing the rate of skin dehydration. It has its own microbiome! It contains oils and antibiotic peptides. An anti-microbial barrier of sorts! Plus, it is seeded by beneficial bacteria from the birth canal. The vernix within amniotic fluid when swallowed by the fetus has potential effects on the developing gut! #vernix #baby #birth #birthfrosting #skin #protection #positivebirth #mothernature #naturesmoisturiser See more

17.01.2022 Happy International Womens Day!!

17.01.2022 There are 2 membranes that protect and contain the baby whilst in the womb, an amnion and a chorion. Less than 1:80000 babies will be born en caul, or still in the sac. The superstitious people amongst us believe its a sign of luck, and that the baby will never drown and may have psychic abilities! My brother was born en caul, how lucky is he?? 14.01.2022 The umbilical cord typically contains one vein, which carries oxygenated, nutrient-rich blood to the fetus, and two arteries that carry deoxygenated, nutrient-depleted blood away. Sometimes there is only one artery (approx 1% singleton and 5% multiple pregnancies). 13.01.2022 Posterior water birth . A good friend of mine didnt know that babies are blue when theyre born. It surprised me that something I had never really thought about because its so normal to me, yet it seemed so abnormal to her. So yes..babies are usually quite blue when theyre born, sometimes even white. They pink up quickly once they start breathing and their hands and feet are last to get pink, so these often look blue for the longest. This baby was born posterior (spin...e to spine), typically a baby comes out facing downwards not upwards. You can see the way the head has moulded to fit through the pelvis.. amazing! This too is normal. #birth #posteriorbirth #waterbirth #normalisingbirth #positivebirth #baby See more

10.01.2022 Placentophagy, or the ingestion of human placenta has been used traditionally for thousands of years for the potential positive postnatal effects Almost all mammals, including herbivores, carnivores and primates consume their placenta after birth Anecdotal evidence suggests that it may: - prevent/decrease the chances of the baby blues and PND... - replenish essential hormones - increase breast milk production - replenish nutrients such as iron, vit B6, amino acids, and essential fats - increase energy levels - minimise postnatal bleeding and help the uterus return to its pre- pregnant state - reduce stress and fatigue - decrease the incidence of iron deficiency Contact me for more information or to book your encapsulation . . #placenta #placentaencapsulation #placentaencapsulationspecialist #midwife #woman #pregnancy #birth #thirdstage #fourthtrimester #baby #naturalbirth #positivebirth #natural #mothernature #treeoflife

09.01.2022 A cesarean birth is still a successful birth. You still created, housed, nourished, and birthed a beautiful baby into the world. Own it . Cesarean birth can be just as positive and empowering as a vaginal birth, you still have options and your preferences matter. Whether you want skin to skin immediately after birth, delayed cord clamping, to watch the baby be born, to assist in the babies birth, to take photos, to have your partner by your side the whole time.. just ask the question and make your requests heard. It is still your birth, dont forget that. #birth #cesareanbirth #positivebirth #women #baby #birthrights

07.01.2022 Velamentous cord insertion Wow Normally, the blood vessels of the baby run from the middle of the placenta via the umbilical cord to the baby. Velamentous insertion means that the blood vessels, unprotected by Wharton's jelly, traverse the membranes before they come together into the umbilical cord. This happens in ~1% of Singleton pregnancies and can mean risky business! Luckily the little lady attached to this one had a beautiful, straight forward birth .... . #birth #placenta #velamentouscordinsertion #placentaencapsulation #umbilicalcord #baby #pregnancy See more

07.01.2022 Did you know that midwife means with women? I love being a midwife, I cant think of any other job that I would rather do. I come from a long line of health professionals, my great, great grandmother was a midwife in Ireland and my Nanna tells me about how she swears she used to hear babies crying from inside her midwife bag! Yes it can be a hard job, it can be sad, it can be frustrating that the system means more time writing notes and doing clinical tasks rather than just being with women. But there is nothing more rewarding than seeing a women become a mother, life being born, and being a part of the journey . . #midwife #midwivesrock #happybirthdaysstartwithamidwife #birth #women #positivebirth #lovemyjob
