14.01.2022 Dear Regional Event Organisers, We hope you are all well.... We just wanted to let you know what we did in Melbourne as a MDC ‘media launch’. We thought this was a good way to try and get some early media and drive attention to the fact that registrations are open. Reflecting our new CSA/TVA (community service announcement/TV advertisement) which you can view here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fF9UziMPd7Y&feature=youtu.be, we got a group of 10-15 of us (committee, staff, volunteers) dressed up in crazy pink outfits - tutus, wings, running gear, sequined hats etc. and ran back and forth outside the Melbourne Town Hall. We invited the Lord Mayor to say a few words and we requested he too wear some pink which he did - hot pink socks with his suit! A couple of days prior, we sent a media release out to the metro papers, TV, and radio stations inviting them to come along. We had the audio from the CSA playing and had some signage to draw further attention. We certainly got a lot of attention (mostly for our costumes) and NINE, TEN and ABC TV stations all attended. To be honest, they were mostly interested in speaking with the Lord Mayor but we managed to get a quality segment on the TEN evening news which was great! We were also the random crazy women dressed in pink standing behind the Lord Mayor while they questioned him regarding other serious topics during the NINE and ABC interviews. It was a fun half hour for all involved and it was great to have the Lord Mayor engaged and speaking on our behalf. Even though the papers didn't turn up, we emailed them a couple of the images that afternoon to try and get some coverage - we weren't successful but was worth a try. We think this idea could work for any of your events - it is a good way to try and get some media attention early. It doesn’t have to be the Town Hall or using the Mayor, just somewhere that is a city landmark and someone who may draw media attention. Have a chat with your committees about it and let us know if you decide to give it a go and definitely send us any images or footage so we can use these on Facebook or Instagram and we can load any imagery to our YouTube site.
