25.01.2022 Thought for the Week from Mothers Union Australia Sunday 30th August 2020 New chapters In the Australian Spring our thoughts begin to stir after the slowing and cosiness of winter. The young members of the family are finishing school, going into apprenticeships or university, starting a new chapter in their lives. The older members of the family remember their own experiences but look forward to what life will hold for them now. Each new chapter of life brings its blessings a...nd its trials. When we learn from them, when our Christian faith witnesses to our love and kindness, those around us, the children and the childrens children can glimpse a WAY of LIFE with which to face each new chapters of theirs. The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time on and forevermore. Psalm 121: 7-8 In Zone C, a participant in MULOA was unsure of her ability to facilitate a workshop. When she returned to her parish in PNG, she supervised her local group to host a dinner. They wore their MU uniforms, were asked what MU was all about and suddenly Linda moved into a new chapter in her life. She learned that she could speak out in the community. Now she has the confidence to run workshops. Alleluia!

20.01.2022 Thought for the Week from Mothers Union Australia by Dr Lesley McLean Sunday 1st November 2020 International issues ... He’s got the whole world in his hands. This notion of theological genius is expounded in the Hebrew scriptures and was confirmed by the inclusive ministry of Jesus Christ. His hands reached out to heal and embrace any who came to him. His voice called out to the dispossessed, the outcasts from his own society and culture. May we also have a wide vision of our Christian responsibility. He shall judge between the nations, and shall arbitrate for many peoples; they shall beat their swords into ploughshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore. Isaiah 2:4 The central opening of Families Worldwide has a map of the world flagging 4 million members around the world. The majority of countries once belonged to the British Empire. Out of God’s great mercy the colonial past has been (in part) reborn under the tender care and encouragement of Mothers’ Union and its foundation in prayer.
20.01.2022 Rev Dr Lesley McLean shares each week the Thought for the Week from Mothers Union Australia Sunday 13th September 2020 Fruitfulness... Human life is varied and unpredictable. The sweet, adorable child becomes a tyrant as an adult. Those whom we taught about Jesus dont care anymore. What went wrong? Yet it is God alone who works great marvels and our fruitfulness is not ours to count. We pray that God will send down the healthful spirit of his grace and pour down the continual dew of his blessing. We may glimpse the fruit of our labours in Christ and are thankful. Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing. John 15: 4-5 In the Province of Eastern Cape, South Africa, MU responded to the Department of Education news of an 8 year old girl needing a prosthetic leg. Local members worked with the municipality to provide her family with proper shelter. A parish now donates groceries monthly. State and local government, parish and MU members: all working together to bring to fruition Gods love.

19.01.2022 Thought for the Week from Mothers Union Australia Sunday 23rd August 2020 Ethical matters Our Church has lost the confidence of the wider community. Scandals, infighting, power struggles all provide food for censure. Of course, this is nothing new. Human beings of whatever caste will ethically disintegrate when society does. One of the earliest New Testament texts, Pauls letter to the Corinthians addresses exactly this issue. He says that they, the Christians in Corinth, nee...d to be seen to be truthful and honest and loving because if they are not, they, and what they stand for, will have no credibility. For we intend to do what is right not only in the Lords sight but also in the sight of others. 2 Corinthians 8: 21 St Paul would be proud of the members in the diocese of Northern Argentina, in Zone B. From mainly indigenous communities, despite poverty and some conflict, they are very faithful and resourceful. There is also growth in urban areas, for which we give thanks to God.
19.01.2022 Thought for the Week from Mothers Union Australia ( Dr Lesley McLean) Sunday 6 JUNE 2021 Stewarding creation... ‘Land in the Bible is seen as God’s gift to His people. They only have what they need. They show their gratitude by not selling it, mortgaging it, or letting it be eroded. They do not misuse it, they respect it and give it rest, and steward it for future generations. But when people violate God’s moral laws, then everything, including the very soil, is spoiled. God calls us to repent for the hardness of heart of ourselves and our fellows.’ Ray Simpson Celtic Worship Through the Year Hodder and Stoughton, 1997. P. 120. Sing to the great God a new song, sing to the Creator, sing the whole earth. Let nature and peoples join in harmony to sing praise to the God of glory. Excerpt from Psalm 96. p. 286. Out of the Silence Into the Silence by Jim Cotter. Cairns Publications, Harlech, 2006. Used with permission. The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it. Genesis 2:15 The Diocese of Willochra makes up all the northern part of South Australia. It has an active Mothers’ Union despite the sparse and wide-spread population. There is good farming land but its low rainfall and over-farming means many areas are in need of careful stewardship. We pray God’s blessing on the land and its people.
18.01.2022 'We need not fear, his Spirit is with us.'
18.01.2022 Were so grateful to be part of the MU family and have fellowship with and support from members all over the world, even when weve never met. In our turn we ask God today that theyll also feel supported by our love and prayers.
18.01.2022 Thought for the Week from Mothers Union Australia Sunday 16th August 2020 Seasons of life Despairing about your failing capacity for work? Remember the years when you couldnt grow up fast enough? The young are not satisfied with youth, the aged are not satisfied with aging. The common denominator is wanting to be other than you are. Contemplate the gifts that are in you and with you in whatever season of life you are. An elder may pause with impunity and have time and opport...unity to pray, to read, to see the stars, to enjoy children without all the work. Thats a great GIFT from God who has wonderfully made us. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; that I know very well. Your eyes beheld my unformed substance. In your book were written all the days that were formed for me, when none of them as yet existed. Psalm 139: 14, 16 In the season of her energy and strength, a mother in Myanmar has attended a micro saving group and then managed to build a house for herself. She now runs a catering business at home, thankful to MU for the program. Let us thank God for the attention MU pays to peoples needs no matter what season of life they are in.
17.01.2022 Thought for the Week from Mothers Union Australia Sunday 22nd November 2020 Gender Justice... "So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them." - Genesis 1.27 In the Anglican Communion we are committed to ensuring that our churches become a living witness to our belief that women and men are equally made in the image of God. Within the Communion and beyond, we recognise that the empowerment of women and men to live and work in just relationship requires a transformation among individuals and in all our communities. Statement and Bible verse copied from the Anglican Communion Website. For nothing is hidden that will not be disclosed, nor is anything secret that will not become known and come to light. Luke 8: 17 Perhaps the greatest impact of the recent work of MU in Ireland has been raising awareness of gender-based violence. This has been achieved by helping the needy, elderly, prisoners and their families and all types of vulnerable people. Members hold annual services and events to support the 16 Days of Activism. May God bless their endeavours.
17.01.2022 Thought for the Week from Mothers Union Australia Sunday 9th August 2020 Mothers Union family What a privilege it is to belong to a World-wide family whose mission is to bring Love and Peace to men, women and children wherever they may be. The Mothers Union family is a microcosm of the unity between all of creation. At the halfway point in time from Christ on earth to now, St Francis spoke of Brother Sun, Sister Moon. The intensity of his spiritual awareness can be overwhel...ming. Let us summon some measure of that feeling of family for other MU members so we may truly regard them as our brothers and sisters. Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. We must always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters, as is right, because your faith is growing abundantly, and the love of every one of you for one another is increasing. 2 Thessalonians 1: 2-3 A community of other faiths joined the parenting program in Myanmar. Members were prepared to welcome other believers, opening their hearts and minds to welcome all of Gods children. Change came about when faith and love increased.
16.01.2022 Happy Mothers Day for Sunday
15.01.2022 Thought for the Week from Mothers Union Australia Sunday 12th July 2020 Heart for worship Attendance at Worship has been problematic at best and devasting for millions this year. We are nothing if we dont worship something: consider the agonies of the sporting communities. But we are more than spectators, we are there at worship, ourselves and souls and bodies adoring the One who creates all things, the One who lives still as our brother and the One who sustains us with Ho...ly Fire. We can adore, love and praise in isolation also, with our whole heart, because we belong to the mystical Body of Christ I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds. I will be glad and exult in you; I will sing praise to your name, O Most High. Psalm 9:1-2 Another area of concern and action for Zone A is the Livelihood of Women. This is important in rural cultures where the needs of children are sometimes not addressed by the fathers. Members discerned that women with income could give priority to the needs of their families. Let us give thanks to Lord with our whole heart for this wisdom.

14.01.2022 Thought for the Week from Mothers Union Australia by Dr Lesley MacLean Prayer and Spirituality Coordinator Sunday 20th September 2020 Peace and safety Australians have communal memory of Cyclone Tracy in 1974. We remember the bushfires of 1983 which coincided with the Churchs liturgical Ash Wednesday. The darkness of night bring fear and danger to many whether they live in well-lit streets or drive on deserted outback roads. Peace and safety can never be guaranteed. Not on...ly are the vagaries of weather and animals to be considered but also the terror created by human wickedness. O God, the maker of peace and lover of concord, give us peace in our hearts and gratitude when we dwell in safety. I will both lie down and sleep in peace; for you alone, O Lord, make me lie down in safety. Psalm 4:8 Communities in Madagascar live with the havoc of cyclones, flooding every year and now more frequent droughts. MU and diocesan leaders are addressing environmental preservation with a special grass which preserves the soil in the rainy season. Trees are then planted which will fertilise the soil, store water and form windbreaks during cyclones. Peace and safety come together with prayer, teaching in resilience.
14.01.2022 Thought for the Week from Mothers Union Australia Sunday 5th July 2020 Hope and confidence There is an illusion that confidence is akin to certainty. Surely with God nothing is certain as he waits on his people to be faithful. The FID in the centre of conFIDence is FAITH. HOPE seems to be what grounds us, settles us A sure and steadfast anchor for the soul. There are no answers to what will happen next BUT faithfulness keeps the light on at the end of the tunnel and hope ...helps put one foot after another. through two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible that God would prove false, we who have taken refuge might be strongly encouraged to seize the hope set before us. We have this hope, a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters the inner shrine behind the curtain Hebrews 6: 18-19 The members in Zone A have decided that one area to centre their work on is Education for Children. There are practical outcomes to anticipate: better access to jobs, for example, but HOPE gives the glimpse of a better future and ConFIDence/faithfulness sustains the courage needed.
14.01.2022 Dr Lesley McLean shares Thought for the Week from Mothers Union Australia Sunday 8th November 2020 Memories... ‘Count your blessings’: do you remember to? Are you, perhaps, dealing with memories you would rather forget? Sometimes these memories do need to be faced. Perhaps you can see now that the criticism was kindly meant; perhaps being overlooked for one position opened another way. Reflecting on the past can bring us to understand ourselves and forgive others. Count on it. I will call to mind the deeds of the Lord; I will remember your wonders of old. I will meditate on all your work, and muse on your mighty deeds. Psalm 77:11-12 In Wales, having studied MULOA, members are looking at what they have been doing for a long time in a new way. Despite facing the challenge of lack of transport and the need for leadership training, projects involving in the local community are having a profound impact on people in hospital or prison or the homeless. Blessed memories for the future.
14.01.2022 Dr Lesley McLean writes - Thought for the Week from Mothers Union Australia Sunday 29th November 2020 Season of Advent... O Wisdom dwelling in the womb of God, generating and nurturing the earth, through the nights of darkness, come and cherish in us the seed of wisdom. Jim Cotter ‘Cries of Advent’ No 2. From Prayer in the Morning, Cairns Publications 1989. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness on them light has shined. Isaiah 9:2 Nurturing has had a great impact on those receiving support from members in Scotland. Released prisons no longer need to use paper to dry themselves. Members collected cloth towels to meet this pressing need and the recipients felt cherished indeed.

12.01.2022 Thought for the Week from Mothers Union Australia by Rev Dr Lesley McLean ( Prayer and Spirituality ) Sunday 6th September 2020 Learning and sharing At a church barbeque (with yummy food) a child, not accustomed to being there, asked whether they have to pay. It is a gift for you was the reply. At an after-school Kids Club an eager boy reached out for yet another (ordinary, boring) biscuit. A leader slapped his hand and snapped that hed had enough (in the days before saf...e practices). With every look and act we are (good or bad) witnesses to Gods generous love. If we get the opportunity to expound that theologically, so much the better. But all of us are witnesses and we all teach what God means to us, whether generous or punishing. You then, my child, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus; 2 and what you have heard from me through many witnesses entrust to faithful people who will be able to teach others as well. 2 Timothy 2: 1-2 In Uganda grass-thatched houses present multiple problems - destruction by fire, loss of possessions, limited opportunity for trade. Mothers Union members of a village grouped together and in fellowship pooled money and rotated it to benefit one family at a time. Three iron-roofed houses have been built, gardening shared with fellowship has boosted skills and food yield. Thanks be to God.
11.01.2022 Our Worldwide President, Sheran Harper has recently visited Rome alongside the Abrahamic Faiths Initiative (AFI), with one overarching goal: to advance sustaina...ble peace and mutual respect amongst faiths and around the world. Sheran said: It was a deep and profoundly moving experience to sit alongside such diverse faith leaders, completely united in discussion around these outstanding issues of our time. When we can work together in all of our faiths, we have the potential to create real and lasting pathways to peace. With four million members, Mothers Union is already leading and delivering impact with women as change and peace makers and I look forward to continuing to bring this learning and sharing to future conversations and action. 09.01.2022 Dr Lesley McLean shares the Thought for the Week from Mothers Union Australia Sunday 25th October 2020 Celebrating the people of God... The world is bright with the joyous saints / Who love to do Jesus’ will/ You can meet them in school, or in lanes or at sea,/ in church or in trains, or in shops, or at tea/ for the saints of God are just folk like me,/ And I mean to be one too. This hymn by Lesbia Scott is available in an absolutely delightful edition illustrated by Judith Gwyn Brown. I Sing a Song of the Saints of God. Moorehouse Publishing 1991. Includes music. [God] chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love. He destined us for adoption as his children through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace that he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. Ephesians 1: 4-6 The MU saints in the diocese of Glasgow and Galloway collaborated with Women’s Aid and the Field Study Centre in providing a 48-hour country trip for seven single-mum families affected by domestic violence. For these two days they were in peace and safety, practiced outdoor skills and had fun with new friends. We can celebrate the saintly witness which left them all feeling stronger and with a positive outlook for their future.

08.01.2022 Across the UK and Ireland production of knitted hearts by Mothers' Union is giving hope and spreading love in hospitals, care homes and hospices. The matching ...pairs of knitted hearts are given to the patient and their family, so that those receiving support can feel more connected with their relatives, knowing their loved one/family has the other of the pair. This simple yet meaningful practice is helping residents, patients and their families get through these difficult times.

07.01.2022 Thought for the Week from Mothers Union Australia ( Dr Lesley McLean) Sunday 23 MAY 2021 Fruit of the spiriT St Paul’s letter to the Galatians gives an insight into the heart and mind of someone who has experience a radical change. Paul’s life, like most Jews of his day, was strictly regulated with very clear do’s and don’ts. The Law, the Torah, beloved of the psalmist as ‘sweeter than honey from the comb’, had developed into an all-pervading noose. You can feel the intensit...y of Paul’s joy at the freedom offered by the Fruits of the Spirit. And not just joy but a tumbling out of GIFTS. Christians are free to become filled to the brim with these gifts and so change the world. By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things. Galatians 5: 22-23 In the diocese of Christ the King in South Africa, rapid urbanisation has resulted in significant growth in parishes. Just over half of these churches have a recognisable church building in which to worship. The rest meet in garages, shacks or the open air. One of the latest new congregations worships in French and aims to welcome refugees from the Congo and other Francophone African countries. May this new diocese implant the Spirit’s joy and freedom.

04.01.2022 Dr Lesley McLean Thought for the Week from Mothers Union Australia Sunday 15th November 2020 Power of prayer... What is the power in prayer? It surely isn’t force given so that we can make others do what we want (even supposing our intentions are honourable, even altruistic). The writer of the Letter to the Philippians associates it with the Peace of God. Perhaps it is rather that trust (don’t worry) and thanksgiving (counting blessings) bring us into the state of Peace, which is Prayer. Being in a prayerful peace is power that we need to give, to forgive, and indeed, to love the unlovable. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4: 6-7 In the diocese of Canterbury UK, the impact of MULOA has awakened members to trust in God and to engage with church membership so that both are involved in local initiatives. Helping outfit a girl starting secondary school has had an impact on her whole family. Everyone was enriched by the power of prayer. Praise the Lord.

03.01.2022 A special prayer...
03.01.2022 Thought for the Week from Mothers Union Australia (Dr Lesley McLean) Sunday 30 may 2021 Peacemakers... The Biblical sense of peace is the community of others. The Risen Lord came to his frightened friends bidding them, ‘Peace’. He called peacemakers, children of God. When we practice being peaceful, then we are peacemakers. Our role as disciples, as ambassadors of the gospel, is to equip ourselves in order to be a peaceful presence. This does not preclude us from agitating for justice, or from interceding on behalf of the victim, for Peace and Love are co-joined. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace for those who make peace. James 3:18 What could sound more peaceful than Aberdeen, ‘a city of the sea. A city where ships dock right up against the city-centre streets. Where urban dolphins leap at the harbour mouth. Where locals paddle-board and surf off the city beach. And golden sands stretch for miles.’ Mothers’ Union members here ‘are committed to working with and through the Church in local mission and community engagement.’

01.01.2022 Thought for the Week from Mothers Union Australia by Dr Lesley McLean Sunday 10 January 2021 Mothers’ Union worldwide... The Philippians lived amid the bustling of traders and travellers passing through between ‘Italy’ and ‘Turkey’. It was probably like any large shopping centre: noisy, full of cheap/expense stuff, tempting. It’s a big and ever-present task to be blameless and innocent in the midst of consumer envy, promotional ladders for the Philippians and us. Mothers’ Union as an organisation is as subject to perversions as any other so it behoves each member to hold fast to the Word of Life, to honestly examine their motives and thus to shine like a star. May you be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, in which you shine like stars in the world. It is by your holding fast to the word of life that I can boast on the day of Christ that I did not run in vain or labour in vain. Philippians 2: 15-16 Vicoba is a Credit and Savings programme in Tanzania. All MU Vicoba groups report that members are primarily using their loans to start small businesses that benefit their families. We give thanks for this initiative and pray that those participating remain blameless and innocent in their deals; shining like stars.
