23.01.2022 Here is the second of our series of articles: MILLION TREES PROGRAM The Million Trees Program (MTP) is a school-based program which operates under the umbrella of Men of the Trees (MOTT) Peel Branch.... It is a very successful program and has been running in the Peel area for about 23 years. It was initiated by a founding and currently active MOTT member, Pip Newman. The program can have up to 10 local schools participating, ranging from Pre-primary through to High School students. In early summer MOTT volunteers sow or ‘seed up’ a variety of local species, usually around 600 per school. The emerging seedlings are then maintained by the students in their school shade houses. The students need to actively care for the plants, and each week they water, fertilize and weed the plants. Sometimes the plants are utilized in the school curriculum and researched by the students for a variety of subjects. In the cooler months and with the coming of the rains, the MOTT volunteers and teachers accompany the students to a selected location for a day of ‘planting out’. Some schools choose to plant within their school boundaries while others take ownership of an area close to their school which they can revegetate and rehabilitate. Areas chosen include wetlands, sand dunes and parklands. The program aims to create and nurture an interest in native vegetation in the students, while adding and restoring habitat for birds and other animals in our community.

10.12.2021 AN EXCITING EVENT AT THE MOTT SHED Saturday saw a great turn out of MOTT members for a seeding up day. It was a great vibe and very fitting for spring or what is also known as the Noongah season of Kambarang. For all of you who enjoy the great array of healthy plants sold from the shed, this is how the tube stock start their journey!... Men of the Trees, Peel Branch, plant seeding process: 1) First the seed trays and forestry tubes are sterilized before use. This is an important step to maintain plant health and prevent the spread of disease. 2) Soil specially formulated for native plants is used for the planting medium in the seed trays and tubes. 3) The plants MOTT select for seeding up are determined by orders place by schools, government bodies, restoration projects etc. MOTT also use them in their Million Trees Project (MTP). They are ideal for local conditions. 4) The size and type of seed determines how it is planted. 5) Some seeds are treated with smoked water to facilitate germination 6) The planted-out seed trays are distributed between MOTT volunteers to take home and care for the emerging shoots. If you think you’d like to become a part of MOTT’s ‘growing concern’ drop us a line and we’ll get you involved!
